1. MMPBs are dying!

    15 December 2025 - 10:58 PM

What do you think? Is it good riddance or are you gonna cry into your fat little copy of The Sword of Shannara?

Last Call for Mass Market Paperbacks
The format credited with making books more accessible via low prices and widespread availability will all but vanish from the publishing scene in a few weeks

The decision made this winter by ReaderLink to stop distributing mass market paperback books at the end of 2025 was the latest blow to a format that has seen its popularity decline for years. According to Circana BookScan, mass market unit sales plunged from 131 million in 2004 to 21 million in 2024, a drop of about 84%, and sales this year through October were about 15 million units. But for many years, the mass market paperback was “the most popular reading format,” notes Stuart Applebaum, former Penguin Random House EVP of corporate communications. Applebaum was also once a publicist at Bantam Books, one of the publishers credited with turning mass market paperbacks into what he calls “a well-respected format.”...
  2. John Gwynne 7 Book Giveaway (by me)

    16 January 2025 - 12:09 PM

Gonna clear some shelf space by giving away 7 books by John Gwynne: the complete The Faithful and the Fallen series (4 books) and its sequel series Of Blood and Bone (3 books). All fatty trade paperbacks, all read once by me and in otherwise good condition.

How this works is: if you're in the continental U.S. only (sorry), and I can see your posts, just post a reply in this thread. At the end of the month (so like February 1), I'll just select someone at random (like names in a hat type of random). I'll pack em up and ship them to you, on my dime. You just gotta be comfortable giving me your mailing address and whatever name works for you. For all intents and purposes, this isn't a raffle or any kind of gambling, just a fun way for me to gift these books to someone.

Separate from that, and very briefly, I just want to mention the Southern California fires -- I'm far away enough to not be in any harm's way (special thanks to the homies who've asked), but have family and friends who have been evacuated, and know of one lost home. If you've seen aerial footage of Pasadena or Altadena then you know that large swathes have been devastated and even some neighborhoods erased. The people I know personally are all safe though, so I can tell you that.

Anyway, if you are anywhere on Earth and want to give something, this link will take you to a list of worthy recipients, organized by category (no direct GoFundMe's here, but near the bottom there's some links to other organized resources for that, if you prefer):
    https://www.kqed.org...es-where-donate

To be clear, that's completely optional and understandable if you can't give $ at this time. Just thought I'd mention it where I might have your attention. Regardless, don't be shy about saying you want the books, cuz I'm giving them away to somebody. It might as well be you!

On further reflection, maybe not so much "jolly good" as "the whole situation sucks but I'm very glad you and yours are safe and I'm sorry to hear that people you know where impacted, but again I'm glad they are safe".

Hah, western north south west. Nice. Hadn't thought of it that way.
Sometimes us from regional New South Wales refer to NSW as Newcastle Sydney Wollongong - the main metro areas that get all the attention from govt and the media, the rest of the state being "here be dragons" as far as they are concerned. :P

If it's all the same to you, I'd like 2022 to be very low on surprises ...
Except the lottery-winning kind. I'd like at least a big pleasant surprise there.
