For our British compatriots, a question; Is there some reason, other than a Tory effort to retain power, that an election for parliament isn't called?

Because if they do now they'll be obliterated politically. If they hold on there's a chance they can mitigate the damage. A tiny chance but a chance none the less.

Boris has thrown his hat into the leadership battle...

You genuinely cannot make this shit up.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Not confirmed yet but he's a narcissistic cretin who will hate that he was ousted. Nor would he ever call a GE. Because he's a narcissistic cretin.

The Tories aren't going to go to the people before they're legally mandated to because they're cowards and they believe that the people will tell them to fuck right off with votes. They also regard themselves as "the natural party of government", so even when they're screwing everything up left, right and centre they believe they're entitled to rule, whether the electorate actually want them to or not.

The only way we could now theoretically get a General Election soon is if the King chooses to dissolve Parliament - he's allowed to if he believes a government has lost Confidence and cannot get its business through the Chamber. It's customary for the Monarch actually seek assurance from the sitting PM as to whether they believe their government has Confidence before doing this, though. The Tories have a majority of 70-odd, so there's no way they will ever lose a vote of No Confidence without something extraordinary going on and, unfortunately, losing 2 PMs in a matter of months simply isn't it.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Is it me, or does that just sound like a MASSIVE lack of integrity on the Tory part?
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Hi, welcome to Britain.

Nail on the head. I keep vaguely hoping enough of them will signal to Labour that they would vote with them in a no confidence motion which means a GE has to be called. But it's never going to happen.

Curious if they implode around picking a new leader now. I watched Question Time and there was some woman who worked in No 10 for Cameron and she pointed out this all stems from Brexit and reminded everyone Cameron called the Brexit referendum to once and for all lance the EU boil that split the party. And of course this is where we end up because they aren't united and only stay together for the power. Historically they have been good at outwardly unifying around something so as to hold on to power so we'll see how far gone they are now.

Although if a GE does happen, Labour are going to have to restart on all of their policies given the bomb that Truss set off in the economy. You wonder if anyone gives a fuck now so long as Starmer doesn't lose his personal credibility. But the press haven't had time to attack Labour lately so it feels more positive than it is for those of us who don't lean right.

I reckon it will be Sunak, Mordaunt or a total collapse and GE.

In my opinion, the General Election (which hasn't happened yet, and probably won't even be called because of the aforementioned obliteration of the Tories), was rigged.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

So did the head of lettuce win that gimmicky contest? I read something about that. Were there prizes involved?

I sincerely hope the reports this morning about Johnson potentially running again are wrong, but at this point the bar of what could previously have been considered nonsensical and therefore impossible seems to have sailed over the horizon.

Boris might make it back in? Is that allowed?

Speaking of lettuce, Truss will collect £115,000 a year for the rest of her life?!.... for a month and half as PM?! Bleeding cheeky sausage hell! That's some righteous green for fuck all (except institutional damage that looks like it will take years to fix). Ya'll so cray over there across the pond. Said it before, saying it again - I find it utterly baffling.
