I need suggestions for child-friendly metal. (I realise that most people would see that as an oxymoron)

My son's favourite song at the moment is Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi.

I've tried playing him Nightwish since their songs are pretty harmless but with the exception of Planet Hell, Wish I Had an Angel, and Bye Bye Beautiful, he just yells until we switch it back to something heavier.

I did find Hevisaurus, a Finnish heavy metal band for kids, but I kind of want stuff that I wouldn't mind listening to.

Rhapsody of Fire? You can't go wrong with epic D&D metal.

Dragonforce? For the pure guitar wankery alone.

Manowar? Just read the lyrics ... cheesy goodness.

Hmmm, when we're saying child-friendly... Are we talking safe lyrical content? Dragonforce are pretty harmless and there's enough double-kick to lead him to believe they're heavy.

You could try Gojira, perhaps. Or, failing that, Infant Annihilator.

I'm a big Manowar fan but a lot of their songs have 'Kill! Kill! Kill!' like lyrics which aren't quite appropriate.

I'll check the others out though - can't bring them to mind at the moment.

He's 2 years old so he doesn't even have a concept of 'metal', he just seems to enjoy it a lot.

Dragonforce are ridiculous. Saw them live a couple of times (on the same bill as bands that I actually wanted to see) and while they are quite fun after 5 minutes it's like "I get it, now what?"

If you want non-sweary metally goodness are you looking for really heavy growly stuff or ones where you can hear the lyrics?

Turisas are fun and all their songs are about vikings and stuff but some of it is about drinking lots and there are some inappropriate lyrics in there but I bet he would love songs like Battle Metal, Holmgard and Beyond, Stand Up & Fight etc. I can send you some links if you want. They fit in some ways quite nicely with Lordi (similar type of heaviness)

I'd start there anyway and see what you think - maybe vet the particular songs first though.

Sabaton are also pretty much a good-time band, although Carolus Rex was pretty heavy in subject matter. All the songs are about war, but the modern stuff tends to slant it towards particular acts of heroism. They're also cheesyasfck.

Metal for a 2 year old...what an idea..... Have you tried Amon Amarth? It basically sounds like an angry lion so no need to worry about lyrics whatsoever.

I don't really care for/about Maiden, however, there is literally NO stopping Bruce Dickinson.

My guess is that the band wrote the music whilst he underwent treatment; as soon as he was given the all-clear and was deemed fit to sing again, he was straight on it.
