I would say my favourite concept albums are probably Jeff Wayne's 'MVOTWOTW', Scar Symmetry's 'Holographic Universe', Mastodon's 'Crack the Skye' and of course anything involving Ziltoid, fetid hu-maaaaaaaaaans.

as much as a i love devin townsend, i wasn't big on his ziltoid project

Partially through metropolis part 2, not sure how i feel about it

It takes some digging. Also worth noting that it's fully a concept album; understanding the story behind it will make it clearer.

might have to lookup lyrics then. Last concept album i listened to was ages ago. Would have been operation mindcrime from queensryche

If I could only have one album from the 80's to listen to for the rest of my days, Operation Mindcrime would be it. Wore it out back then, and saw them do the whole thing live twice. Absolutely outstanding imo. Still fires me up today when I throw it on every now and then.

Its a good album, i just wasn't big on it.

Just started listening to TSO's album, beethoven's last night. Really digging it. That combined with my recent discovery of therion i feel as if i've stumbled into a classical/metal phase. Any recomendations along these lines?

If you want a really intense concept album in a very true sense of the meaning of the term, get "Be" by Pain of Salvation. The concept, musicianship, diversity of style, research and effort that went into it both before and during and after it. Mind blowing but it doesn't come easily. It really makes you work - it took me a few listens to get into it but flipping heck it was worth it!

Might be worth reading up on it too to help explain it.

Fetid Philospher! You shall know the meaning of 'give us your coffee' soon enough.

Ayreon also is worth a look for concept albums. The Human Equations is excellent.

In related metal news, one of the suits upstairs was wearing a Sylosis shirt earlier. We commented on each other's. Someone knowing my sort of music well gives me hope.

All this talk about Concept albums, and no one here mentions Blood on ice. I think that once album is my most listened to album ever. Bathory really succeeds on creating a great atmosphere and sticking with it until the end.

I've seen them a few times in Manchester. Once with Killswitch Engage, and once with Devildriver.

The revival of this thread has been really good for me. I almost stopped listening to metal in the middle but now I have got my interest back.

Going through a Gothic MEtal phase now. After Forever blaring on the speakers.

I find myself increasingly conflicted about the type of metal vocals I like.

I love Dickinsons soaring powerful style, but frankly I prefer Judas Priests screechier noise. I have tried and rejected the 'clean' vocals of bands like Queensryche. Metal should be grittier. But I can't like the growling roar of death metal. It just seems monotonous. Yet that same growling when accompanied by the operatic female vocals of symphonic metal bands, I love.

Guess I am still exploring.

Listened to a song. Seems quite close to my preference area though I would like more complex music.

Seems to be a new band?

Within Temptation / Nightwish / Epica -> After Forever / Therion -> Orphanage / The Gathering -> Dimmu Borgir / Old Man's Child -> Enslaved / Immortal -> Marduk / Emperor -> Mayhem / Darkthrone (swap/invert as per personal taste)

The natural development of the black metal listener. From there into blackened death. From there into death metal. Before you know it you'll be listening to Nile and shouting 'SLAYOOOR'.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Emperor are excellent for black metal. Prometheus is possibly that genre's epitome. I very strongly recommend you check out Black Crown Initiate and Fallujah, who are more towards the death end of the spectrum.

Enslaved are one of the few Black Metal bands I truly love. I dunno what it is I'm just not hugely into that scene (though I can't say I'm a fan of the hail Satan cap a lot of them come out with so that's definitely a factor...)

I'm not huge on black metal either. Emperor and Chthonic are about as far into it as I go, and Chthonic ceased being black metal for the most part when they released Takasago Army.

Enslaved is more Viking metal than satanic. Same with Immortal. They paint sonic landscapes using BM as their palette. Enslaved these days incorporates a lot of Pink Floyd like influences and seems to move more into the prog metal sector.

You can safely add Tiamat (the album 'Wildhoney') and (early) Trail of Tears to that list as well, same area (symphonic metal). The Gathering as well, of course; Anneke van Giersbergen is practically the grandmother of the genre. Try 'Strange machines' and 'Saturnine'. She also worked a lot with Arjen Lucassen of 'Ayreon' fame. And with loads of other bands and artists like within temptation, anathema, devin townsend, moonspell, etc.
