I've been missing from the forums for a while (yes, again) so just wanted to put up a hand and say... I finished Turn Coat, and now cannot wait for Changes. Also, Jim Butcher rocks enough that I'm going to take Codex Alera out for a spin. Unfortunately can't read too much for the next couple of weeks, and there is that Malazan re-read (GotM -> TtH + NoK, RotCG) that I'd promised myself, so...

I went out to start reading Codex Alera the other day, but I saw a steampunk book, and I had to try it...I may regret it. :killingme: I'll find out when I finish The Judging Eye.

Do try the Codex Alera -- you won't regret it. Even if you think the first book isn't anything special -- remember how you felt about Storm Front...

I really do need to get on with CA eventually... at this point i'm tempted to wait for the last one then read them all in one fell swoop.

I'm on the last of the Codex Alera books now, and I can't stress enough that this series is a must read. For me it is better than the Dresden files. I've been reading Codex with KM, which was quite nice as we have been able to discuss each book in depth and bat ideas back and forth. I will warn anyone who is taking on the series that the first book does drag and doesn't seem to be anything special until the very end. After the first book though, the series takes off and gets better and better with each book. I think Codex is a fantastic series, and Butcher has quickly become on of my favourite authors. I would and have been recommending both the Dresden and Codex series to anyone and everyone.

I'm shocked at how easily I've bought into the

trope, though. I don't think I've ever seen it done with such panache.

I just finished the 3rd Aleria book, and I would highly reccomend them, also. They are really, really good books.

is the series finished? Meaning is the latest book the definite conclusion?

- Abyss, conclusive.

The next book out (in November I think) will be the last one.

Yep, last book is slated for November release and he's officially stated he is planning a new project for when that's done.

And talk about insane work loads, the guy produces two major fantasy series at a time? And his writing just keeps getting better? Now, I realize that combined that's still equal to one SE book. But still, it puts certain other work rates I could mention into perspective... ;)

Thanks, I will be trying it...but to be honest, I loved Storm Front. It may not have been until Fool Moon that I got into full-on jaw-dropping mode over the series. But there was no doubt when I finished the first book I wanted to read the second. Even if I hadn't bought the first 3 at once.

(apologize for the two posts, I forgot to reply to this one too and I had meant to previously.)

Amazon have a title for the last book: First Lord's Fury.

And I loved Storm Front, too, but you have to admit it pales in comparison to the rest of the series (at least, the books after Fool Moon). And the same is true of Codex, which takes off in the second book. Really, give it a try. And if you disagree, I will accept all the blame and buy you a beer in consolation.

But, as you say, Butcher keeps getting better. And his books have internal consistency. Whereas Erikson appears to barely edit or proofread and has admitted that he's wearing himself out by writing this fast and will have to ease up once book 10's done.

The man's a phenomenon.

Add another reader to the Dresden fold...

Bought and read Storm Front on Sunday. Clearly not a challenging read... But who reads Wizard-Detective lit for prose-style? Loved Bob. Loved Harry's tools of the trade. But I look forward to delving further away from mundane Chicago/Midwest and learning more about the magical/fantastical world Harry has access to.

Thanks for the comments about "the series gets better and better after the first few books", this has given me the push to move more quickly into the rest of the series... which might otherwise have had to wait for future air-travel and other quick-read opportunities.

Now am I supposed to promise fealty to Abyss for posting in here or are we good?

mother f$%&ing son of a postal worker!

How's that?

BTW -- How long does it take everyone to chew through these books... I didn't think I'd pressed "inhale" on my 1974 Read-o-Vac, but I doomed the first book fast. Do they become more meaty as the series progresses? (They all look about the same length on the bookshelf at Chapters).

They become more meaty in the sense of more depth, but the length remains about the same. Bummer, but the more into the series you get, the faster you devour. Until it becomes a hunger. A hunger no amount of reading can satisfy. And then, all that's left are brainzzzzzzz......

As if anyone who has read the other books couldn't already guess this title.

I'm an Alera fan, and not a Dresden one, but I will be picking up the first few Dresden novels on my next book buying binge. I'm sure I'll like them, though.

It's funny how Malazan and Dresden are so very different but so many forumites have become fans of both.
