Am I in for a ride or not? I read the first chapter in Barnes and Nobles and I was sold when he said, "Paranoid? Probably. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face."

Lol.
I still heart Goodkind.

I've just read the first six. 1-2 I thought were ok. 2-4 were better. 5-6 are freaking awesome. I can't wait to get the rest from the library.

Right on. I hope I don't get to the point where I'm just sick of it. I mean damn, 20 books with a trilogy finisher? That's a hell of a lot of books for the same protagonist.

I'm through the series up to Turn Coat, which I'm waiting to either purchase in paperback or check out from the library. The books are GOOD, and the get BETTER. Butcher's writing has gotten better, while his humor has retained its hilarity.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

You do not get tired of Harry Dresden, trust me.

The first two books are unfortunantly a bit slow compared to the rest of the series as Butcher gets into his stride. It's from the 3 books and forward the series really picks off.

So general consensus is to read them?
I'll put them on the list.

It has come to the point that the books have earned their own sub forum on Malazan Empire, so yes, GO READ NAO!

I don't think I've ever actually heard anyone from here say they didn't like the series.

I was wondering about the new sub-forums, thought someone had gone mad with power again.

I'm done with the first three and am now working on the fourth (Summer Knight). I have to say I liked the first two more than I did the third (except for the awesome climax and aftermath)... and the fourth is slow going for me. I don't know... across four books the whole "Harry Dresden caught in the middle of multiple factions, hurt/ morose, just trying to do the right thing" bit got old for me.

I hope that isn't the dynamic for all the books?

No, the formula of the story begins to change, but Dresden still gets into one scrap after another.

I've always thought 1-2 are ok, 3 is better, 4 is where the awesome kicks in and doesn't stop. It amounts to if you even like the first few, you will LOVE the rest.

I did find i needed a break after reading two or three Dresden in a row. I could see getting a bit bored if one were to just plow thru the whole series without a pause.

That said, really, it's a great fun series, well written and totally enjoyable in a big hollywood blockbuster in text form sort of way.

- Abyss, fan.

Thanks, Apt. I just finished book 1 and I was going to quit the series. Thought it too slow and I was
dissappointed in Harry Dresden who I imagined was a merciless killer of demons. Book-One Harry is always
so sad when someone or something dies. I expected more.
Your comment convinced me to keep reading. Txs again

Apt, please note the spacing of my remarks. I was very careful, but the sentences will not print as
I type them.

Harry Dresden is a strange sort.

He's sort of an "out of this world" type of personality that cares too much. All through the series you'll see him being unreasonably stubborn, unable to make comprimises when it would save him a world of difficulty. One of the main storylines that starts in book 3 and dominates the series for a while, happens simply because Dresden cannot betray his ideals.

Dresden is a strong sort of character. Any form of bullying, evil and stupidity will have him dig in his heels. He believes in true love. Friendship. Loyalty. Sacrifice and nothing less than his all goes into what he commits himself to. It's probably going to be his undoing.

I was actually very frustrated with him for a long time because of it, I am nothing like him, but then I came to love him for it.

...a true 'white knight', pun intended.

But part of the fun of Harry as a character is that he IS a 'good guy' and he does try to do 'the right thing'. Michael is such a great foil to Harry because he's even MORE of a boy scout which shows some of Harry's less nice elements.

Also, as the series progresses and Harry gets into some nastier situations, he becomes less nice, at least to the bad guys.

It's actually quite impressive how the character grows over the series. Supporting cast too.

- Abyss, not nice.

Oh yeah, Harry is a nice guy, but his methods isn't... I still laugh at the "snake-boy in the motel" scene. So awesome.
