I am probably seen as biased, so I won't comment on anything Terez did.

However, I can comment on a general basis, I do have an understanding of what the mods are doing, and how rules works on forums. Warnings are placed for a reason - to give the person warned a chance to take a step back and consider what he/she wants to be like in the community. Anyone can do rash things - post offending stuff and derail threads and whatnot, that's why you sometimes need someone to rein you in and remind you of the boundaries of the community. Because of you want to be a part of it, and if you really like being a part of it, it should be in your own interest to keep the community a place you yourself want to be a part of. If you do feel you need to take a stand on something, which could happen, then you should be prepared to take the consequences.

This is where I would feel like saying something nice about Terez, because I think she is better than this. But I doubt she would appreciate that kind of gesture, so I will refrain.

Thats...really mature of you Gem. I know you two (and myself) are generally at odds, but...what nice things? Is that like an obituary or something?

Terez makes for a good discussion, but just never knows when to stop, as I'm sure everyone has noticed at some point.

Trouble is, warnings aren't enough sometimes; if warnings aren't backed up with action then it's pointless having them, so I can see why she's been banned.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Frook, well, I just realized I kind of...already did say a nice thing about her with that last paragraph... In a Freudian way, I guess that kind of refutes the maturity level of what I was saying.

Anyway, being at odds doesn't necessarily mean I can't appreciate someone. But that's all I am going to say on the matter - dammit Frook, stop trying to drag it out of me! :harhar:

Why would someone not appreciate a nice comment about them? Hell, if I always disagree with someone and they take the time to make nice comment to me or about me, it only makes for a gentler, perhaps more enhanced discussion.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I don't mean to say that Terez wouldn't appreciate nice things being said, I just thought she wouldn't appreciate them coming from me. It's just a hunch.

Edit: but lets not discuss that, she isn't here and can't defend herself.

Sorry, that came out wrong...what I meant was that you may feel a bit better about yourself if you said a few nice words about her, you were so going to, but you stopped...why?

edit: I bet you my left testicle that she might be happy to hear that you said kind words about her.

Well... alright. But, I never got the feeling she didn't like you or appreciate your discussion, more along the lines of she just didn't agree with you and thought your arguments were poor. Those are two very different things, and I'll leave it at that.

There are a few grey areas in the rules and more importantly the rules aren't always strictly applied - there are double standards. But this is a good thing. It means we have a mod team that uses their judgement and we all get a few classic threads. I mean probably 50% of Apts total posts would be against the strictest interpretation but they were funny as hell. This unfortunately means that we don't always agree with a mods judgement.

Seems a simple choice, let mods use their judgement and put up with double standards or have the life squeezed out of the place by draconian rules.

What happened. Why am always the last to know. Sometimes I feel like a miss out on this huge under forum.

Also this talk of mod meating in their secret orbiting sattelite really makes me wonder, do I ever get discussed. Its a good thing if Im not but Id kinda feel bad if I never once got mentioned

For the record, I advocated banning all members except spam-bots. A board filled with spam-bots selling things to each other is a thing of sublime poetry. But luckily for all you wankers, I was shot down.

I gathered all that, when did this happen what thread. How come I never noticed but everyone else did.

When were you suspended?

Also I feel like a perma ban is a bit harsh. Not because she never deserved it but well because its so permanent. Also its entirely selfish. I dont lament her lack of access to the boards, I lament that we lose a member. One who I was not close to but one who I never had a problem with. I dont think I can recall anyone ever getting banned forever. Even Marduk got to come back

wow, eventful day.

not much to say on the subject, except that making multiple acconts is a bannable offence. everyone knows it. it's in the rules. If Terez chose to ignore that rule, I don't see the flaw in the mods' reasoning.

While I didn't talk to Terez all that much, I would occasionally read some of her threads--here and in the DB. I didn't really agree with her on a lot of things, but never wanted to actualy argue (cept that time she tried to take over the HAWT thread).

RE: general content, this question comes up periodically. I think the "not safe for work" labels we put on the classic threads should be warning enough to the underage visitors. but then again, that's just me.

reading this over, I realize that last part makes it sound like I advocate floodingthose threads with mature content, which I'm not. Most of the time people here are very mature about the type of content they post. There are few threads where grey area subject matter can be found more often--I feel that those are the ones that deserve the NSFW label, and I believe that that, in addition to board members' judgement should be sufficient.

I'll personally say on the issue that I for one will miss her - she was very direct and outspoken and I can appreciate that kind of personality, personally. I think that's also what made her create those other alts, and I can also see why others didn't like her as much as I did.

I have no wish to comment about her ban at all - rules are rules. Cooldown, take a shower, count to 10 etc. should have been applied. I'm curious as to why she didn't, but I guess time will tell.

Mezla (lots of snips):

Quote

I think there are double standards <snip> She might have been annoying to some, but is personality a bannable offense?

I'm definately not advocating draconian rule (only by the Abyssmal Army :harhar:) or critizing the mods - who do a good job enforcing the clear rules without being repressive and like us all, are only human - but I think right now, the nature of the Inn as we know it does, to a certain extent, allow stuff in one place and snuffs things of the same nature out in another thread, and at times, it's somewhat unclear what is allowed and what not, or where a derailment starts.

As such, I've got to agree with Mezla here - there's a grey area (the fact that it isn't said out in the open much shows the mods do a good job and that the Malazan community is a relaxed and tolerant bunch). Someone who's on the watchlist might experience a bit more pruning/watching than others, possibly - or a new thread is easier scrutinized than an existing, 20+ page one.

Still... I'm a sad panda.

I guess I'll put in my two cents here.

On Terez: In the now infamous 'Misleading' thread Terez & others derailed the thread and were warned by Cougar. This was immediately followed by another post from Terez continuing the derailment. I then stepped in and pointed out Cougar's warning and added my own. She replied to my post saying she had understood Cougar's warning perfectly well but didn't really care. That, on top of a history of warnings for her conduct (see the religious forum) plus a second derailment (same thread) onto a fairly unsuitable subject amounted to a short suspension. I brought up the cervical stimulation topic in the mod's forum because I felt it was unsuitable and wanted confirmation that others agreed. Unfortunately I had to go out and only just got back and aparently all hell has broken loose today!

On Grey Areas: There are and always will be grey areas on what is and is not acceptable. It is impossible to change that. End of story. The point is, you will NEVER be banned for accidentally over-stepping the line. If you do it you will be very gently told. If you do it again and again you will start to piss people off and you will start to get serious warnings. If you don't care and think you're behaviour is still acceptable then yes, obviously the mods will go a step further.

As for Terez being perma-banned and never being allowed back, well....we'll see. Technically she has been banned forever but look at Marduk, snake and Hume. If she lets the dust settle and comes back WITHOUT THE SAME BAD ATTITUDE, she will probably get back on the site.
