Hmmm... on the one hand, B5, BG, Buffy, and any number of other genre shows had weak starts... hell Smallville is still going and i scratch my head over the life of that series (ok, so he's Superman, but in flannel, and no capes, no flight, and he's got hot women throwing themselves at him but he can't bang anyone)... and i think Supernatural also (it's a vampire! quick, take your shirt off and flex your pecs!), so there is some hope.

On the other hand, with the exception of the (first five or so seasons of) X-Files, investigate-into-the-supernatural has never really been a successful tv move (see Kolchak, Millenium, Surface/Invasion/Threshold/Fathom/etc...).

I second the motion! Great bad guy.

Kincaid's been dropped in a little abruptly but does work. Murphy's aces. It's so obvious they (as in her and Harry) will eventually get it on.
Marcone's the best support character though...

Marcone was brilliant in Death Masks. I liked him before, but everything about that book kicked the series up a notch for me.

The seventh which I'm about a third in is shaping up to possibly top it despite my reservations about one development.

Finished the seventh now. :p When do I get more (as I'm doing the paperbacks?).

Anyway, hehe. Not quite as good as Death Masks perhaps, but

Just started 7. So far, so good. Not so sure i'll be able to wait for May for 8 and 9, may just buy 8 in hardcopy once i'm done 7.

Butcher's fandom forum at his home page is in a full-blown uproar over the TV show. A lot of 'waaaaah, it's not like the books, my life is ruined, waaaah...'

- Abyss, as opposed to all those minor, quiet uproars...

Just curious. I haven't read a good book in that sub-genre in awhile (have read Kim Harrison, Blake (who I can't stand anymore) and Kelley Armstrong).

It's some entertaining fluff, and I haven't had any of that sort in awhile (although I am reading Katherine Kurtz and Deborah Turner Harris' Adept series, and it's decent).

Unless ya'll get pissed a good ol'fashioned thread jack, then I'll start a new topic on it ;)

Halfway through the 4th now ;) Really liking this series.
Ordered books 6-8 as well.

EDIT: Re: the series, I just noticed that Sci Fi is airing it out of order. The actual pilot episode, Storm Front, airs 6th. Looking at the production order, they started with episode #4 and followed it by episode #3. Perhaps there is an actual reason for this, other than simply messing up any chances the show might have had a'la Firefly. (FOX aired it's actual pilot episode that youknow, introduced the characters and the world and did all the stuff that pilots are supposed to do, as 11th episode.)

Dresden didn't have that bad an opening, all things considered, so you never know. And Sci Fi's flagship series, Stargates and Galactica have all fallen in ratings this year so that's a positive thing for Dresden. Or well, at least not negative.

P.S Just started Death Masks :D I suppose I should sleep at some point.

Nah, you should finish Death Masks.

The way Firefly was treated by Fox is legendary. Especially the way they apparently fired the guy responsible for axing it when they released the DVD and it sold like hot cakes on a cold day.

Death Masks remains my favourite book at this point. Thus Vaiski, you must resist sleep.

Watched the first two eps this weekend. I was not blown away, and chances are good if i wasn't a fan of the source material, i wouldn't have bothered watching further. I realize there is only so much that can be accomplished on TV with limited budget, and i'm not by any means one of those fanatics who needs the show to resemble the books in all respects. It's just that it was a weak show, with weak plots, (i mean come on, two possession storylines in two episodes... that's just weak in a fictional universe), that only hinted at what it could become.

Since there were those hints, and it wasn't THAT bad, i'm willing to give them a few weeks before writing it off.

- Abyss, tried, but didn't like Firefly much.

I just finished the book 6. Haven't seen book 7 out anywhere yet. Fantastic. Devoured the first 6 in a week or so. I finished 4, 5 and 6 in about 10 hours or so (not continuously reading).

If I had internet at home I might hunt down this TV series, but for now the books satisfy me. Clever, original, well-written, funny...excellent reading. Lots of character growth and change in the universe, books that stand-alone and leave you hungry for more. Except for the fact that everything happens in Chicago (and I mean that like all the magical heavies end up there), its a very well-fleshed out universe, brought more to life by every book.

Actually, i find that while a rediculous amount of stuff does happen in Chicago, Butcher makes an effort to let you know crazy stuff is happening all over the world...

Spoiler

Book 7 is out in paperback. As book 8 is due out in paperback as well in a month or so, and book 9 in hc the month after you'll probably see it shortly.

I just finished it. It's a bit more of a slow build to massive finale, but DAMN, what a finish.

@Polishgenius...

Spoiler

Anyrate, still loving the books. Nice to see others in agreement.

- Abyss, occasionally wishes the books were three times longer.

If they were three times longer, he'd take three times as long to write them. ¬_¬

really?!? Hmm... will have to watch for it then. if i spot it before April, will grab. Have already resigned myself to buying 9 in hc, because dammit, i LIKE this author, so he gets my dollars to support him doing more of these novels.

@P-Genius - one of the things that bugs me about the decision to do a TV series is that the wild finales will never get the kind of delivery they deserve. Most of the books have some kind of crazed mad genius Hollywood ending that could ONLY be done right on a big screen, with big sound, and massive effects. I don't care how good your TV CGI budget is... TV could NOT do the Dead Beat finale justice.

...and again, if you haven't read the book, do NOT read this...

...really, SPOILERS for book 7 DEAD BEAT here...
