Response to Abyss spoilers. Do not read if you haven't read Proven Guilty.

Since I last posted, I've gone back and re-read the first five books. It had been so long since the first read that I had actually forgotten most of the details of the plots and I had forgotten how much I liked them... now I have 3 (soon to be 4) new ones to read. Hooray, beer!
Yep, I read the entire series again the last couple of weeks. Hey respond to the Kim Harrison thread.
New Dresden and Hollows book coming out at about the same time. It will be good.

Picked up the first three yesterday afternoon, have now finished reading them and will be off shortly to buy the next three
Great fun, and definitely worth a read if your in the mood for a fun book... possibly not so good an idea if you have some work to do though...

Thats insane!
I finished the first one the other day, very enjoyable, although the ending was slightly dissapointing maybe. Good use of the broom though;)

@IH and CB - You both lost me - are we talking Butcher or Harrison now?
Caught up on the TV this past weekend. It's growing on me. Letting Harry do more magic and intro'ing the High Council, Red/Black Courts and other elements is really helping it along.
- Abyss, huge fan of the Mighty Hockey Stick of Doom.

They are cheap little paperbacks - manwhore yourself out for an afternoon and then buy them (and some mouthwash) and get on with it.
- Abyss, shouldn't have to explain these things...

I resisted for about a week before starting book 6 (I knew that once I started I wouldn't be able to stop, and my work/family would be unhappy with me). Anyway, I'm sitting here at work and just started book 6 about half an hour ago. It's a rare series where the wise cracks alone can keep a perpetual unconscious smile on my face as I read, even before any real action occurs.

Finished book 7 yesterday. Yeah, this series just keeps getting better. It went from "nice, light filler read" in Storm Front up to "could legitimately be on my top shelf of books" by book 7.
Mild spoilers.
After this set of reads, Dresden has a more distinct hold on my top slot in this genre, with Harrison still in second and Hamilton falling off the pace.

On Butcher's site you can read about how LKHamilton actually got him his first break with a publisher.
- Abyss, would almost forgive her 'Narcissus in Chains' for that. Almost.

You guys have convinced me to give 'Storm Front' a try. Just ordered it from amazon. I actually haven't read anything from this genre before... well unless Anne Rice's 'Interview with a Vampire' and 'Vampire Lestat' count. And I read those a long long time ago...

Nah, Tif. Those don't count at all. Much more inspired by noir. With a hefty dose of magic.
Dresden is most definitely a hardboiled magician :-D
And is one of the most solid entries into that subgenre that I can think of (magical noir, I guess it'd be? Urban fantasy noir? What's the genre?).

Thanks. I guess the reason I never checked any of this stuff out was because it looked suspiciously a lot like Buffy/Angel that took itself too seriously. But from reading this thread it sounds like there's much more to it.

'Urban fantasy' i suppose, with noir elements to it, but while Dresden goes grim at times, it's not really as (forgive me) 'dark' as i tend to think of noir fiction.
The humour element echoes Buffy/Angel, but it's a bit more adult, less cutesy highschool.
- Abyss, has a pen named 'Mister Pointy'... what?
