Thanks Drek!

Im thinking of applying to be a starbucks Barrista or something, any money while I look for a scientist job would be welcomes. Starbucks lists no experience required and gives onlt the following criteria for instance

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to learn quickly
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and request clarification when needed
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to build relationships

I think I can do all of these things but I dont know how to put these skills on a CV without coming across as over qualified (Would starbucks care?). I just don't want to give the impression that I wouldnt care about the job, and I imagine they might be unhappy if they know the whole time I am working there Ill be looking to jump ship to something better. I suppose I can doctor the CV a bit and put down tutor and teaching assistant etc instead of scientist and PhD

Yeah, it might be best to just leave out the actual finished qualification, and make it look like you are still working on your PhD.

And my dad would tell you to make sure you go deliver your resume in person so they can see your can-do attitude and feel how firm your handshake is

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

If you can accurately decipher hastily scribbled names on a side of a paper cup and call it out to the waiting customer, you'll get hired at Starbucks. You'll probably be tested on that.Posted Image

It's missing another "a".

I’m a offer you some advice: make sure you can dole out proper change.

Don't Starbucks do Paywave or eftpos?

In my experience, alongside your foreign accent (tick) you'll need a man bun and carefully curated weird facial hair.

Not Starbucks, but for 2ish years my favorite barrista did, in fact, have an eye-patch (and tatts and piercings).

It could only have been better if her name had been 'Peg'.

They will determine if you have a personable approach to customer service and place high value on that. They want their workers to easily enter into airy, conversational interaction with customers while people wait for their order. A lab rat may have to adjust to that and come out of his/her shell to reach their level of expectations for that.

Yikes. So my cousin whom I’m staying at has a dustbin in a draw in her kitchen. Some trash fell behind the dustbin draw. No idea why but it has this half wall at the back that doesn’t stop rubies falling behind but does stop you picking it out and it stopped the draw closing nicely. I’m taking a look at it with her and I can’t reach it and she says her husband did it before it it probably needs tools. Her kid calls her away. While she is away I discover no tools required, the draw slide have locks you just need to push in and slide it out. I first do it with the draw above and figure easier to remove the little draw and reach in the back but my arm won’t reach. So I discover the dustbin draw has similar locks.I slide it out a little bit don’t even pull it all the way out and have my cousin nephew reach in the back and pull the garbage out. Push it back in but now I notice the draw is stiff.

Turns out America has advanced soft close draw technology. No idea what I did but the draw is stiff. And she is pissed and acts like I was crazy for doing this. Thing is there was no other way to do this. This is how you remove soft close draws. I have been googling it. You just need to adjust the locking clips and whatever but she doesn’t want me working on her draws and she is angry and she implied I should have left it alone because I made it worse.

Now I did make it worse but I’m sure I can fix it but I figure I better wait for her husband to get back tomorrow and do it with him less she get even angrier. Thing is I know that the husband would have had to do exactly what I did to remove the draw to fish out the trash that fell behind. No better way. Also I only did it because I figure helping out like this is the least I can do to earn my keep and it’s backfired so spectacularly

———————————————-

Now speaking of helping out I’m worried on two fronts . Around Halloween my cousin nephew won fish and brought them home. His parents say no fish has ever survived longer than a week. I think this can be my responsibility. So I help out and I feed it and I change the water and two months later we have living fish. The mother says they going away and I’m moving out and the moment that happens the fish will die. I said tell him to stop winning fish if no one cares for them. Now this is sad and a little narcissistic but it is a fish. Now I d a long time ago no one cares about these fish. I don’t even care about them. But I can’t just stop feeding them until they starve to death.

However two weeks after I moved in they got a dog. They first told me they wanted a dog in January. And now they got one. It’s a rescue one year old. Really sweet dog, remarkably well behaved and 95 percent potty trained. I walk this dog 3 times a day and I play with it. In over two months it’s weed in the house twice and pooped thrice. Most of that in the first two weeks as it adjusted to a new house. My cousin already says she regrets it and jokes that maybe the dog will get lost and spoke about giving it away with her mother in law. The kids all love how cute it is for five minutes and then go back to their iPads. They wonder why the dog tried to escape the kitchen all the time, if it wasn’t for me the dog would get five minutes of attention every time someone leaves the house or comes back home. That’s it. Now the cousins husband I got to say loves the dog and walks it and plays with it but he travels for his job a lot and has been away about fifty percent of the time the last two weeks by example. When I leave this house it’s only gonna get more complicated and more difficult for them. I seriously worry they may just put up the dog for adoption so soon after getting him. I always see those FB posts about how a dog is a commitment for life and always wondered who these people whom could just get one and give it away are. Honestly right now I think the husband wants it, the mother wants it gone. The kids want it but none of the responsibility. Also despite the fact that I walk it more than anyone else combined, despite the fact I play with it, I’m the one who runs after it when it escapes into a part of the the house it’s not allowed in I have begun to get annoyed how they take it for granted. When I get a phone call from South Africa and leave the dog downstairs with three or four of them to go take it privately upstairs it will be thrifty seconds before the dog escapes. Watch your own dog! For five minutes.

Ahh shared living. Those animals are toast when you move out, Cause.

Have you found any decent lab jobs to apply for? I worked at the Public Health Reaserch Institute over the river in Newark, NJ when I was there. Everyone bar two people in the lab I was in were foreign. It had a really nice vibe.

Today’s the day. I’m heading off to live in the big Apple.

I just hope that producer was legit and she really did need those naked photos to convince the producers to hire me on broadway.

So brooklyn. I’m enjoying having freedom again. Walking around. I have to say though that New York compared to Tokyo or London has cleanliness issues. Graffiti, not art graffiti just the messy kind is everywhere. People litter like crazy.

So far the thing confusing me the most is that there appear to be none or very few targets or Walmart’s in Brooklyn’s. Instead you have a bunch of mom and pops. It’s cheaper for me to have amazon deliver anything non perishable to my door than it is to walk the 5 meters to the corner store? Madness? How do they stay in bussiness

The key is the tremendous foot traffic, plus people realizing that spending money locally is far better than constantly going to Amazon or Walmart. It's a struggle that many are losing, though.

If you can, get to know your local bodega people and shop there. It'll pay off in terms of connections and keeping the community strong.

I don’t think I qualifies as a bodega. It’s called khims, a 24 hour Grocery store that does have a lot of Asian products but by no means only Asian. A ten minute walk takes me to Williamsburg food court. Better pricing but still more expensive than amazon. I find that bizzare.

So for example a six pack of microwaveable rice trays on amazon is about 9.50. Excavation same product at khims was 350 each. Meaning amazon is less than half price including delivery. I know renting the stores footprint is not cheap but amazon must be killing businesses left right and center. I know it’s problem but didn’t realize how it it was.

The adventure of Cause the Malayan Yank continues!

Some enterprising New Yorker has painted trumps effigy all over the streets of Brooklyn with the hope that you will get your dog to poop on his face. On the one hand creative on the other hand I really dislike this disrespect for the public space I see everywhere.

The subway system. Shudders. I need more hand sanitizer. Today I saw a homeless man doing something surreptitious with a bag. I thought he was about to do drugs right in front of me, than I thought no he is peeing into the bag on the subway. Well it turned out he was emptying some kind of stoma urine bag into this bag. The stench was cool. Then he tied a not into it. Opened the doors between the trains and threw it out. This was the j train in Brooklyn so it’s above the road. I see sometimes you can see under the tracks. I hope no one got piss blasted.

I went to a dollar tree. Impressive pricing. Got some boxed candies for a dollar and some milkshakes. Pretty much everything I got there was junk food. However the clientele scared me. I felt overdressed by showering that morning. I now understand the people at Walmart webpage. I mean it was by no mean everyone but it was a few people.
