The cheap stuff at grocery stores and at cheap restaurants is full of sugar and corn syrup. I will say that veggies and fruit tend to taste a little blander here than they do in Asia. I suspect that some of this is intentional, but I also think that there's too much pressure on fruit especially to be large and nice looking rather than tasty.

Cause, go to the Meatball Shop and Eataly.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Wendy’s is not good. Not good at all.

Omg the prices at eatally are insane. People always say the food in SA is so good and cheap and I never really understood what they meant.

Basic rule of thumb: if you need to drench somethi g in sauce, it probably isn't very good.

Cause what do you weigh at the moment? I'm going to ask you the same question in 6 months!

I have actually lost 3 kg so far. A two factor problem of so much food does taste bad and I now have to cook for myself.

Most Americans will strongly disagree with you on this. Their taste buds are severely atrophied. It is wise not to inform them how crap their food tastes.

wait wait, aren't you from England?

But yeah, American food is a weird category. They're great at bbq and such, and the food I got in Louisiana was excellent, but there's so much of their staple foods that to me tastes awful. Like all those fast food/franchise restaurants so many Americans seem to love. I think they're used to so much salt and sugar in their diet they don't experience it like we do. When I lived in Chicago I had to get a bakery to bake bread for me without sugar or cornsyrup or whatever for instance. Who puts sugar in bread?

Not to say there's no amazing restaurants in the US. There is! Lots of them. I had some great food experiences there. However, my personal experience is that there was a higher chance of a terrible meal in the US than other places I've been to.

Didn't you eat a bunch of meals with me? Now I feel bad for subjecting you to Bad Apple all those times.

Hey, Bad Apple was a great burger and the fries were excellent. No complaints there! And that bbq place we went to a few times after you bought the house, that was some good bbq.

Smoque BBQ. Is very very good.

If he is in NYC he should go to Chinatown for Chinese food not some silly chain. As is the rule of thumb in every Chinatown - pick a place full of Chinese looking folk and it's bound to be good.

Just go ethnic. Jewish deli's, Italian pizza, Chinese chinese. That's what the US does well in my book.

But during those three months we have daylight 24 hours a day. So it evens out. Besides, we just travel to Spain for quick sun-fixes during the off season.

I won lottery tickets again, this time of to the illusionists of Broadway.

Does anyone have experience with this? The tickets I got for tootsie from the lottery was quite good, but I see in the fine print the lottery doesn’t guarantee you good seats. They can under the rules even give you partial view seats, which at that point you could probably just buy the tickets for a similar price.

So moving out into a a sublet apartment soon. Just me and probably 3 roommates sharing a kitchen in Brooklyn for an outrageous amount of rent.

The american adventure continues!

On the one hand rent will be a bitch but being in the city might allow me to explore more. The suburds dont work if you dont have a car.

Perhaps a littel sad but this will be my first time in my own place and cut off from any support. Back in south africa I never had to worry about cooking, cleaning or doing laundry. i started doing some of this while staying with my cousins/ Still this will all be a big change. Im a little nervous but also bvery excited

Thanks Drek!

Im thinking of applying to be a starbucks Barrista or something, any money while I look for a scientist job would be welcomes. Starbucks lists no experience required and gives onlt the following criteria for instance

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to learn quickly
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and request clarification when needed
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to build relationships

I think I can do all of these things but I dont know how to put these skills on a CV without coming across as over qualified (Would starbucks care?). I just don't want to give the impression that I wouldnt care about the job, and I imagine they might be unhappy if they know the whole time I am working there Ill be looking to jump ship to something better. I suppose I can doctor the CV a bit and put down tutor and teaching assistant etc instead of scientist and PhD

If you can accurately decipher hastily scribbled names on a side of a paper cup and call it out to the waiting customer, you'll get hired at Starbucks. You'll probably be tested on that.
