Holy hell, spoilers sans spoiler tags. Time to disappear from the forum until the beginning of August.

That's it, I quit the board, life, humanity, my gay cowboy lover, etc.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Yeah that Malcalypse post was a bit much. That's an appearance I would have liked to have been surprised by.

I would say I'm leaving this thread but I know that won't happen.

All sounds fantastic to me - the teaser about Burns Hammer-man has got me very excited, as well as the insights provided by Pat and KFC about the setting and outlay of the book. So the Tiste peoples were one race - always on the cards! Mother Dark - good to know! Time-line inconsistencies - meh, whatever! HURRY THE FUCK UP August!!!!!!!!
There were clouds closed fast round the moon. And one by one, gardens died .....

The timeline inconsistency that I alluded to -- if I'm right -- is a MAJOR screw-up. Checked the Malazan wiki and now I've contacted Hetan, for it appears that I am indeed right. So unless something occurs later in the book to prove me wrong, some fans are going to be grumbling...

If you guys could peruse the dramatis personae, I have a feeling that some of you would be foaming at the mouth! :) Quite a few surprises in store for you!

Nah, not really. Finish the main series. You're dawdling a bit.

I hate to say it, but being unmoved by it, does not mean we should trust him. Steve may simply not care...

Abelieno, I loved your reviews of the first six books, I think. You actually get Erikson's writing. Have you read past BH yet? If so, do you have a link to any more reviews??? Would love to get your impression of FoD.

Anywho, I still say Grizzen Farl is Quick Ben or Adeaphon Delat.

And KCF, how far along are you with FoD??? I really want to read a full review. Wondering if you will beat Pat to it.

Unless Mal or Hetan wanna give us one.....

I will probably sigh at yet another timeline issue, but at this point, the timeline's already so wonky that I'm sure I'll end up ignoring it in the face of a good story anyway.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

Personally "fully aware" is everything I'd ask.

But it depends if he was fully aware when he wrote the book or only after :)

This. He doesn't care along as tells a good story. We knew that in TTH when Harllo the Destroyer turned up around 4 years too early. It will undoubtedly annoy me and makes me think he was throwing in tantalising references throughout the main arc as nothing more than fodder. Then when it comes down to it and he has to address it he can't quite get it all together. Theres a thread in the movies forum that complains that the creators of Lost and BSG were just making it up as they went along and while SE isn't quite doing that, I think there is an element of that. No doubt any questioning of inconsistencies or timeline will have the SE defenders out in force claiming all history is distorted etc when really they're just slip ups from the author. I simply hope this isn't like OST where the main activity n the forum was what we all didn't like about it and a discussion of all the timeline inconsistencies.

I still have hope

EDIT- RE spoilers the majority of these are simply in the DP and are probably not brutal spoilers. Any real surprise visits in the book will not be in the DP and will simply appear like the main arc.

A small diversion. Thinking about the protean mythology I started thinking about how Fiddler plays with the deck of dragons and how they invented the rules on the fly. Then I remembered this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomic

Then I read the first page of "Fishin’ with Grandma Matchie" and it seems to read like the first page of FoD that Malaclypse gave us... or maybe it's my interpretations that are always askew.

Quote

BEHOLD!

In the Olden Days they used to have Jesters. Jesters talked about Plain Things as if those things were fat and skinny and tall and short. But sometimes the Jesters made those things too fat or too skinny or too tall or too short, and then they were bad and Not to be Tolerated, and then the king would stick them in a corner and make them wear a Dunce Cap.

Now, the corner is a funny place. You stare at the walls where they meet, and you begin to understand the importance of the Bigness of Things. And it all starts Making Sense. This is the place where children who are Not Yet Considered Adults go, when kings and teachers get all fretful about children with Overwrought Imaginations.

You see, when you're sitting there with your feet not even touching the floor, you stare at those walls where they meet and you know you can't fit between them because there's no crack. And that's when you suddenize that no matter how small you are, you're never small enough.

Which is just what the kings and teachers want you to suddenize.

(the first line is actually the first line from "The Wurms of Blearmouth".)
