OK mega thread split done. There are now separate threads both for the discussion about sports wages and the discussion about automation. Unfortunately you either can't duplicate posts or I've forgotten how, so hopefully they're reasonably coherent...

'Mike Pompeo unveils panel to examine "unalienable rights"
Pompeo indicated that the panel could also be used in part to rein in overzealous invocations of human rights, suggesting the group "revisit the most basic of questions: What does it mean to say or claim that something is in fact a human right?"
"How do we know — or how do we determine — whether that claim ... is it true and therefore ought it to be honored? How can there be human rights rights we possess, not as privileges we are granted or even earn, but simply by virtue of our humanity belong to us?" he asked. "Is it in fact true, as our Declaration of Independence asserts, that as human beings we — all of us, every member of our human family — are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights?"'

I'm sure their mates Kim, Vlad and MBS would be delighted to contribute to drafting any document.
EDIT: kinda related, the air really was cleaner under Obama

Big surprise
I'm sure 50% of the difference comes out of Trump's mouth.

The deliberate and desired end product of Trumpism by its adherents, from top to bottom. Horror upon horror upon horror.

As I read it, this sounded more and more like a quote from The Onion...up until it wasn't.

This is and will be a stain in our history. I want GoT shame bell ringer falling them all around.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

It means that the president has a "kids say the darndest things" level vocabulary and maturity and that informs his perception of the world.

Dang, just came up with a far out hypothetical: How would ultra-patriots react if a president went so far as to deliberately target active US military, veterans, and their families, with the goal of destroying their lives, in order to enact a petty grudge against the previous president. You know, those real flag waving, support our troops at all costs types. What would they say in response? Anyway just thinking out loud. Not sure where I come up with these crazy ideas. Maybe it's just the fact that this exact situation is happening right now.

Presumably exactly the same thing they said when he last floated the idea of revoking citizenship earned through service. "Sounds good!"

Everyone's probably heard about it already, but it's worth noting here (for posterity at least) that President Donald Trump went full out "Go back to Africa" this morning on Twitter, to four sitting congress members. Is it worth noting that three of them were born in the US and the one who was born abroad came to the US as a child refugee? Like even if they were all born in Africa or other "shithole countries," it would still be racist. But in this case there's also the brazen domestic white nationalism of it all, the emphasis on who is really American, who the country really belongs to, no matter what we pretend about 'citizenship' when it's convenient.
On the bright side, it does have some of even our numbest skulled pundits saying, "Hey now, wait a minute. Is there something kinda off about this guy??" Jk, posing it as a question or even a surprise is just more fake objectivity at best. I suppose that's better than this though. Anyway, it is impossible to affirm this man with your vote without also affirming this ideology, without also being responsible for its ramifications.

Anazing. He told natural US citizens to go back to their shithole countires because they are black and no one bats an eye lid.
The trump phenomena deserves study. Its not unique to him but he is currently its most famous example. If politicians are always throwing up the next scandal, the next outrageous tweet, just pretending all criticism is baseless rather than stacking the deck against them as it all adds up every card gets analyzed in a vacuum, the previous outragous stunt forgotten as well focus on the new one.

Yes, but AOC and Tlaib are the children of immigrants, and his use of 'they' was ambiguous. Blaring dog whistle? Certainly. But as with so many of Trump's statements he maintains a garishly thin veneer of 'plausible deniability.'
[Edit: I was wrong, AOC's mother is from Puerto Rico, which is part of the US o A. So not really an immigrant. However, probably still close enough for that 'plausible deniability'---which stopped being plausible from Trump a long time ago.]

He doesn't need deniability, plausible or otherwise, because by and large his fellow Republicans agree with him. His racism is the feature not the bug.
(Not to let establishment Dems off the hook for targeting these same four women last week for the exact same reason -- their principled stance against funding concentration camps. We know what use the white moderate who is more devoted to order than justice is to facilitating white supremacy. That said, they weren't trying to get these women assassinated, like our president and his adherents are).

There is no veneer as I am aware. He said They, but to my knowledge their is excactly one congresswomen who was not born in the USA (The one from Somalia, who moved to the US at 7 years old I believe I read). In any event he is still saying that black people, except maybe the descendants of the slaves, are not true citizens whatever the law might say. You cant be eligible to be a congresswomen if your not a citizen. He is saying their citizenship is not good enough for him. Put this is the contecxt of trump saying that Brack Obama was too black to be American and demanding his birth certificate and the pattern is clear. As if the CIA and FBI and whoever else checks security clearances etc wouldn't know where the president of the united states was born.
He is unworthy
