Two great albums came out today.

One is called "The Quest" by a Canadian act called LEAH. She plays a great mix of Symphonic/Celtic inspired metal, with similarities to bits of Ayreon/Nightwish etc. I really like it after a couple of listens and I am going to listen again, it is perhaps a bit less "metal" than some of the others in the genre but it makes for a good listen nonetheless.

The other is the progressive metal masters, The Ocean (also sometimes known as The Ocean Collective) who have managed to follow up their stunning album "Pelagial" with what I believe will be the first part of a double album. This one is called "Phanerozoic 1: Paleozoic" and while I am only a couple of tracks in, I am enjoying it almost as much as Pelagial so far.

Just gave this one a listen and really digging it. My musical tastes have difted a fair bit over the years and now that Im doing classical singning operatic stuff is now kinda my thing. In a way im rediscovering metal when I find this stuff.

New Haken album out at the end of this week! Considering they are pretty much my favourite band I am quite excited by this.

Really getting into Vector now. I was a bit worried about it when I heard The Good Doctor, but there's some pretty awesome stuff on there, especially Nil By Mouth, Puzzle Box and Veil. I even like The Good Doctor now.

Yeah I took a while to get into Vector and it might be my least favourite of their albums but each listen brings more love for it.

Saw Nightwish at Wembley last night. They were awesome, and played so many old songs that I never thought I'd get to see them play live Posted Image

So utterly jealous right now.

Floor is a superb vocalist and stage performer. She has excellent stage presence and one of the best voices I have ever heard.

I remember seeing Floor Jansen fronting a local tribute act ages ago. It is an annual thing they do (did?) in the south of the Netherlands (Roermond), where a bunch of local musicians (Epica, Dreadlock Pussy, god dethroned, asphyx, etc) join up for one night in various groupings and put on a short setlist of songs from a famous band, anything from Abba to Nirvana to Madonna. I think her group did The Gathering. Must have been about a year or two after the first After Forever album was released. Great fun, although nobody beats Anneke of course.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

They don't get a lot of traction here in the 'States. I couldn't get any of my friends interested in seeing them the last time they toured.

She is, she really is. I think this tour, this set list, they have finally - FINALLY - laid the ghost of Tarja to rest. It was simply awe-inspiring to hear Floor belting out those older songs, singing them better than they've ever been sung before. Posted Image Posted Image

Have to say, the lighting was absolutely marvellous, too, the way it enhanced the rear projections and created such an atmosphere, especially during the likes of

Not metal, but jumping on the Manchester bandwagon: De Staat plays at 'Band on the Wall' on Saturday the 9th of Feb! Got tickets for me and the missus. Dutch alt rock from my home town of Nijmegen, difficult to categorise but think of a bit of a mix of QOTSA, Muse, dEUS with a sprinkle of electronics and craziness added. I actually found one of their albums lurking in the metal section of a local HMV store, so tenuous but valid.

Yeah, my Haken ticket is now that much more valuable to me. I love Bent Knee!
