Aaaaaand Haken were sublime as I knew they'd be. What a gig!

They were spectacular last night. I've never heard Ross sing so well. And Bent Knee were awesome.

Indeed! Always happy to hear them play Crystallised. I've been listening to Bent Knee non-stop since then, though.

New Cellar Darling album is out in two days time, and I'm seeing them twice next week. Don't think I'll try and meet them this time, though, having made a complete tit of myself the last couple of times :p

Went to see Cellar Darling at the Waterfront in Norwich last night. They were fecking awesome, as is the new album. Got to meet and chat with them afterwards and got them to sign my ticket and (another) copy of the album. That's the third time I've met them, but the first time I haven't made a complete tit of myself in the process, so I think there was relief all around :p

Seeing them again in London on Sunday.

^^ Should be a great night. I'm tempted but last time I saw Devin he was a bit of a let down. Unlike Cellar Darling last night in London, who were awesome again!

Oh that's a shame but I've never seen him so I definitely want to.

Did you make a tit of yourself this time?

Dunno if it's been mentioned here already (I'm too lazy to go through 22 pages), but Unleash the Archers' Apex is definitely something power metal fans (which I assume most posters on this thread are, being a metal thread on a fantasy forum...) should check out. It's a concept album, and the main character reminds me of a T'lan Imass (especially Tool (the Imass, not the band)).
Also, I wholeheartedly concur with all the Haken fans on this thread. Aquarius is almost a daily listen for me. Affinity was a weak point, I thought, but Vector was a return to form. They are in my mind successors to Dream Theater, whose last 5 albums have been a little repetitive despite a great start to their career. Haken, however, have made 5 albums with different sounds on each of them.

Albums this year haven't really done anything for me. So far I've listened to Resist by Within Temptation, which was okay, but not amazing, and certainly not very heavy; Empath by Devin Townsend, which was pretty good, but I'm still struggling to get my head around it; and Distance over Time by Dream Theater, which was a partial return to form, but still not as good as the pre-Octavarium material.
On my listen list:
Wired for Madness - Jordan Rudess
The Eighth Mountain - Rhapsody of Fire
The new Nightwish, if it comes out this year (I seem to recall Tuomas saying it probably won't come out until next year - maybe he's planning on sacking Floor or something ;))
Fingers crossed, the new Tool (but it probably won't happen)
Rammstein - Rammstein
The Great War - Sabaton
The new Tarja, if it happens.

I find this incredibly confusing - I'd argue it's one of his strongest albums to date. Whilst yes, it's disjointed and a very involved listen, it's also Devin engaging Maximum Overdevin and just cutting loose and doing what he wants.

The demo disc was underwhelming, sure, but Empath itself is probably front of my list for top albums 2019.

Have to admit I'm not keen on Emparth overall, but 'Why?' is magnificent.

ETA: Emparth . . . ? ;)

Hrm, hasn't Samael already completely cornered the Swiss avant garde/bm market? 'Passage' is a classic in the genre.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Speaking of good BM, has anyone checked out the Lovecraft/Cthulu themed BM band The Great Old Ones? It's flipping great stuff. I'm not a massive fan of BM but they are dripping with atmosphere and really brooding. I love it.

If you like Lovecraft themed BM, go check out old Orphanage.

Apologies for the poor quality of the tracks, couldn't find any better YouTube vids. Sounds way cleaner on the album.

Please, all, do me the favor of never not referring to this subgenre as simply "BM".
They came with white hands and left with red hands.
