Crazy Rich Asians is not an average romantic comedy. The pieces fit together better than most produced in Hollywood for the last ten years. I'm not saying its the best, because it's not. It's one of the best Hollywood has made in a while.

But Bollywood fairly regularly pumps out equivalent or better. So that's what you're missing here, Slow Ben.

So, How To Train Your Dragon The Hidden World.

It's good. It's the weakest of the three by a long stretch, because most of the plot is really just how to spend an hour getting to the inevitable ending we knew was coming (the last half an hour absolutely shines because of this).

Some of the best scenes in fact are Toothless and the Light Fury together without dialogue.

The villain is.... well, two dimensional would be generous. He's a space filler to get to that ending. I remember reading something a while back that originally Drago from film two was supposed to be the final villain and for some reason they bumped him a film forwards, leaving them with a gap filled by Grimmal. Not terrible but for me it does show.

However, when you get down to it the trilogy has been an absolute triumph. Toothless has to be one of the best-realised animated characters ever, and John Powell's score is still beautiful. All the voice actors are back giving it their best - Ruffnut and Tuffnut have always been the least funny aspect for me and this continues, but hey, horses for courses.

Yeah, I cried. My being a softy is long established though.

Doubt I'll watch it myself, tbh. Not that I'm freaked out by it or anything. Would check it out when/if it makes it to basic cable. Would require that there is nothing more worthwhile to watch on the telly though. Eventually I can see myself home after a night of heavy drinking with the lads, chillin' on the couch and flipping around the channels and landing on it. And thinking to myself "oh, yeah, I remember this, they did a reboot of the Pet Sematary movie, lets see if it is any good."

Isn't Velvet Buzzsaw the spiritual successor of Nightcrawler? I haven''t seen Nightcrawler but I've read excellent reviews about it. Shame Velvet Buzzsaw isn't making the grade.

In other news: I wish they would leave lying properties alone (not everything needs a reboot), but this as Aubrey Plaza, so that's a bonus. Brad Dourif better be doing Chucky's voice.

Nightcrawler was okay, but a bit overhyped. Ultimately it was a decent film with an excellent performance, no an excellent film.

It sure did. I was just thinking about how the phrase "bucket list" absolutely exploded from the movie. As far as I know, it's even the origin of the phrase, and it's become ingrained pretty universally. What other phrases came from movies like that (or at least, the movie greatly meme'd the concept)?
I can think of: Pay It Forward -- for such a goofy movie, it did kinda energize that phrase and the concept behind it. Reading up on it, the concept is (naturally) ancient, and the phrase itself is about 100 years old plus had a resurgence due to Robert Heinlein in the 1950s, but the c. 2000 book/movie really seemed to bring it back in a big way.

Won't You Be My Neighbor? -- formally, it's a pretty standard clips-and-interviews doc. But that's all it needs to be, cuz those scenes and stories are all so wonderful. If anything, I just wish the movie was longer. It's not even remotely trying to appeal to anyone who's seeking a takedown of the man, but that's to its credit. It also doesn't bypass his occasional gruffness, his tendency to judge other media harshly, or instances where he challenged the times or bent to them. But ultimately it's not shocking, and shouldn't be a knock, just how wide a swathe of people have undying affection for him.

Halloween (2018) -- forgot this was a direct sequel to the first movie, ignoring even the second. I liked it...not everything works, there's at least one goofy twist partway, but it definitely gets The Shape right and Jamie Lee Curtis gets her Linda Hamilton-in-T2 moments.
