Just saw Bubba Ho-Tep with Bruce Campbell. If you're into the Evil Dead series, insane conspiracy theories, Elvis, and laughter its a pretty fun one. Really well filmed and has a crazy plot line that gets wilder every act of the movie. Five stars in my book for complete originality and good comedy writing.

Also just saw A Star is Born...

WTF was that about? I'm 30 now and grew up watching every movie I could get my hands on from Kellys Heroes to Aquaman and have noticed a trend in story telling within the past five years with morbid endings. The music and acting was great, no doubt about it, yet I couldn't get behind the story. It was evident via the tone of the story of where it was going which seems to be a trend in certain dramas these days. I can wrap my head around The Malazan Book of the Fallen. There are devastating losses of characters you grow to love but the sacrifices are for a reason. Bradly Cooper's choice was just lame at the end. Promoting the idea its okay just to give up. The example I gave to my brother about "acclaimed" films these days was if Red from Shawshank Redemption just carved in his name and hung himself like Brooks rather than going to find his friend to get the Oscar because of how profound it is.

Thanks to amph's reminder, I finally watched The Favourite. It's crazy to see Yorgos Lanthimos do his thing with a script he didn't write, but danged if this wasn't right up his alley. I don't need to tell you guys, but Olivia Colman is one of the best living actors. Weisz and Stone great as well, but that's normal. Nicholas Hoult, on the other hand, shockingly good as one of the funniest characters I've seen in the last year.

Wife took me to see Aladdin the other day (or rather I agreed to go with her because I wanted to distract myself from my stepmum's passing).

It was passably decent, didn't have the charm of the original of course, and I thought some of the new songs broke the narrative up a bit, but eh.

EDIT: I gotta say though, Will Smith was a stroke of casting genius.

This has zero style. It's bland AF. Ugh. As a fan of the Barrymore, Diaz, Liu Angels flicks, this one has zero of the camp required to sell this concept. This could be any other of the umpteen generic action movies out there in the last few years with no defining qualities.

That said, it's really hard to say how much of it is the movie and how much is the shitty song they're trying to sell the movie with. It's a trailer terribly edited to a terrible, boring track and therefore I'm not gonna write it off just yet.

Speaking of Spider Men, I watched Far From Home yesterday. It was good, fluffy fun. Not as good as the first, but certainly still entertaining, and I did really like what they did with Mysterio. Ultimately, the film was basically wearing a t-shirt throughout with the slogan ‘not to be taken seriously’.

I also saw SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME yesterday, and really enjoyed it. If I was ranking it in the entire MCU it's fully top middle of the pack (better than the likes of Captain Marvel and Thor 2, but not a scratch on either GUARDIANS movies or the Avengers ones), but I still had a lot of fun watching it, and think it's excellent.

I loved what they did with Mysterio. I had a feeling going in, based on who he has always been in the comics, that I'd be able to immediately tell how they would use him....but I was STILL almost fooled by that fucker into thinking he was good. The whole "disgruntled former Stark employees" aspect where Mysterio and his illusions are a team of talented tech dudes makes SOOOOOO much sense in the MCU. It allows a touchstone to Stark's influence not just on Peter (in a positive way), but also in a poor way to people who felt mistreated by his magnanimity. Gyllenhaal is note-fucking-perfect as Quentin Beck. All the scenes that prelude the "reveal" of who Mysterio is...you buy it. You 100% buy this benevolent superpower dude who is helping Peter through the PTSD from Stark and his place in the world now. Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the bad guy is essentially a guy in a Mo-Cap suit with tech gadgets stolen from Stark.

The "Far From Home/Spider-man and his friends on Holidays" works ONLY because of the tight and tonally excellent chemistry between Zendaya's MJ and Holland's Parker. Every single scene with them and their friends hinges it's greatness on that combo, so kudos for the best Spider-man casting ever (McGuire is a close second), and probably my favourite MJ to date as well. The jokes that come from this portion of the film are always chuckle-worthy, if not perfect. The teachers who are in charge of the trip bumble around and do a lot of the slapstick work and I have to admit, it was corny but I laughed.

The MCU revelations we thought were present, may not be. Beck is clearly NOT what he said he was (from another Earth)...this doesn't mean that the multiverse isn't on the table...I fully think it is since they made it a plot point (albeit made-up) here for the audience. Missing is the bit from the trailer where Fury explains that the Thanos Snap produced the way for Beck to come to our universe from his...

The explain the Blip....which was the moment of the Snap and which students aged and which blipped out and back in a moment in the opening which was a nice add. I know people questioned why Peter and his friends all were still young at the ned of Endgame, well it's because the Snapture Blipped his friends. They have one dude who stayed and aged the 5 years. The students all had to repeat the year they were in. This also allows for jokes, like MJ on the plane telling the flight attendant that Flash is not 5 years older and thus should not be drinking.

The post-credits scenes open up some interesting things going forward:

-Beck recorded a video before his "death" framing Spider-man for the elementals and drones and damage in London...and reveals that he is Peter Parker. This happens over the big screen at Times Square. That's already huge, but what happens next is more insane...J Jonah Jameson is the one reporting this from the Daily Bugle (acting like Alex Jones) and it's....J. K. Simmons! That's right the J Jonah from the Raimi Spider-man movies is J Jonah in the MCU ones. My kingdom for a McGuire cameo from an alternate earth.

- the second post-credits scene shows that Maria Hill and Nick Fury from this film are ACTUALLY Talos and Soren (the Skrulls from Captain Marvel) and that they've been covering for the real Fury and Hill...who we find on some sort of ship or space station...my guess is that this is the genesis of S.W.O.R.D.

And SOOOOOO many moments throughout the film I kept thinking "Man, Fury seems "off" in some way. What's up with Sam Jackson?..." and then after the reveal I was like "OF COURSE he's off because it was Talos the whole time trying to ACT like Fury!"....brilliant. Utterly brilliant. There is also one big tipoff to who Fury is, when Peter is asking why the other Avengers can't help he's like "not here, off world, busy" about most of them...but when Peter mentions Cap Marvel Fury-Talos's reply is much more hardcore "Don't invoke her name!"....and this would be because to Talos... Captain Marvel is his saviour and a queen worth worshipping and not worthy of some little superhero kid calling her up to help him. It was only after the reveal in the post-credits that this made sense to me. And funnily enough, the tiny snippet we get of REAL Fury is spot on to his portrayal in the MCU.

Watched Moana when it was on television recently. Never seen it before and didn't go in knowing anything about it other then it's a Disney movie (of the princess genre). I really enjoyed it and thought it was excellent. The Rock doing the voice of Maui was a treat. I don't think I recognized any of the other voice actors, but they were all more then accomplished. The setting really spoke to me. I loved the Polynesian lore they injected into the plot. And the CGI hair effects were amazing.

Are there any other movies (Disney or similar) that are of this high quality that you guys would recommend? I think I've heard/read about a movie called Brave is supposed to be really good.

Yeah, the Talos reveal did a lot to explain why Fury seemed so bumbling in this film. I also remembered after that at one point Fury says to Parker that Beck is not from “your Earth”, rather than saying “our Earth.”

I also enjoyed how the Elementals explanation seemed so ridiculous, and then it turned out that it was basically intentionally so, with Beck even calling it out as being super dumb, but that people will now believe anything after Infinity War - lazy writing as a plot point and social commentary hah!

Soundtrack done by Lin Manuel Miranda, I love that film. Princess and the Frog is another good one with a decent soundtrack.

And The Emperor's New Groove is hands down the best of all Disney films.
