What's the riddle here? =/

The riddle is why does he think that math expression works for the situation he describes?

He elucidated the logic; what he's said makes sense to me...seems like he gave the answer as part of the riddle.

But I fail at statistics so I might be missing something.

The math problem he gave says you get 'more' money each time you choose to trade envelopes.

He is asking why this is so, and I am replying that it is not the correct statement to use for what he wrote.

Well, maybe what i wrote was not a classical riddle, but for me it is a puzzle. (Hope that i posted it at the right place here, if not: sorry for that.)

What the question is: how is it possible that the steps you take to come the conclusion are imo true/logical, while the conclusion is (for me at least) so contra-intuitive.

I still trust my intuition: I don't think blindl or open trading envelopes will make a difference, so the real question is: what is wrong with the steps that lead to this conclusion?

Hope that i explaned it clearly now. And about the statistics: i'm not a math teacher either. :p

Do you mean that using math here is incorrect? Or did I use it in the wrong way?

Because you have one of the envelopes, and there is only one other envelope with either double or half of what you have, you can't just take double and half, add them together, and divide by 2.

You would need STD or someone else in here to o the actual mathermatical formula.

Well, that's basically what I suspected. I am still curious about the reason why you can't do it like that. Thanks anyway.

oh right... i hate asking these things.... ummm....

This is one I got sent at work:
Seven sons she has, this loving mother,
One is aloof, the other with a temper;
Four are gifted with rings of wonder,
The last, to his mom none is dearer.

She also has two daughters, we gather
Like twins, close to each other.
We know one for her air and laughter,
Hot, dazzling and beautiful, the sister.

Her names, one too many to remember,
But all known to a devote follower, To you, to me and to every wanderer, She is arguably the perfect mother.

Question: What are the names of the mother and her dearest son?
Who were gifted rings?

I think this is right

The mother is the Sun, and her dearest son is Mercury.

Gifted rings are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet.
He turns to the rich man and says to him,
"I have an amazing talent: I know almost every song that has ever existed."
The rich man laughs.
The poor man says, "I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."
The rich man laughs again and says, "OK, how about my daughter's name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller?"
The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.

What song did he sing?
