Well I upgraded to Windows 10 and Rome didn't like it. I contacted support and there is an issue with DirectX compatibility or something. So it looks like I'm done playing that.

Are you playing the CD version or the Steam version? Somehow I'm expecting the latter will play nicer with W10.
All these previews for Total Warhammer really make me want to fire up Medieval II and then install some of those total conversion mods there.

This is strange. My ancient Empire Earth 1 did not run on Windows 8.1 but is running on 10. Go figure

Steam version as I lost the disc I had before. Hence why I'm annoyed by it. I don't want to get an older version of DirectX because it might mess something else up...

You don't want Triarii.
You want early legionary cohorts and roman cavalry.

Your preatotians cost twice as much, take twice as long to train and you generally wont be churning them out in your frontier cities.
Let us meet in a far land little man, away from your precious rome, I will grind you to dust you fool.

Lately I find myself contemplating purchasing the StarCraft II Battle Chest.
Now, I own a retail copy of WoL (bought on release day, back when i was younger and foolish). Which is apparently given away for free by Blizz these days.
buying HoS would cost me smth like $25. buying LoV- about 45-50.
Buying the BattleChest--- $45ish. talk about pricing fails.
Now, I hate Blizz ever since their always online shenanigans with Diablo 3. But I also crave a nice, directed high production RTS, and Blizz are clearly unsurpassed in this field. And I do have this masochistic desire to see just how badly they butchered the StarCraft canon by the end.
Buying retail seems like the most sensible to give Blizz the least money.
What other games are there that deliver a solid single-player experience? (note, I never really liked the 20th century wars as any type of gaming setting)

Blizzard redeemed themselves I think with how they continued to support Diablo.
The battle chest will be well worth it.
The rts genre is like a dessert these days. No idea what to recommend
Best I can think of
Total war
Xcom

I disagree. D3 is still always online for PC, despite the fact they released a PS version that can be played offline. It's a perpetuated lie, and I continue to resent it.

Yeah, I believe it tanked on the WinStore, so they ported it to Steam.
Edit: apparently, no only the Definitive edition for the original is on Steam.
Grey Goo is next on the to play list, but gotta wait a week, cuz hitting this month's data cap.

Umm, sort of a lot and sort of they didn't? Like, it definitely doesn't feel like a natural segue from the original or maybe even from the original SC2, but AFAIK it doesn't outright retcon anything, either. It all "works" in the existing lore. I think.
I had fun playing through the follow-up games. I even got through most of the zerg campaign on the harder difficulty (but had to switch back to normal/casual for the last couple levels and the protoss campaign). They're a lot like the terran campaign where you start with just the basics and then get a new unit every mission plus lots of unlockable upgrades you have to choose between.
