Im a big fan of C&C. Tiberium wars are good, Red alert 3 must be avoided however. I kill things with mamoth tanks. Lots of them. Otherwise theirs supreme commander. I like to build startegic artillery that fires anti matter shells. Otherwise Warcraft 3 is old but so good

I like to trundle Trebuchets out of a side gate during a siege, and turn it on the flank of the invaders just before they reach my walls.
Nothing like burning missiles cutting down ranks of soldiers with a single shot
Not entirely adverse to trappin people in siege towers, and setting light to them.
Total War brings out my sadistic side, obviously...

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I prefer Cossacks: Art of War myself, but anything in that franchise is great - no unit caps = unit spam mayhem!
Overall, I'm more of a turnbased kind of guy though. Civilisation IV, Galactic Civilisations II, Heroes of Might and Magic IV being my staples.
And for board games, give me Chess, Go, Quoridor and Othello/Reversi, in that order. Awesome games all!

Art of war is an expansion to European wars
adds a couple more nations, + 5 new campaigns.
but it's basically the same game.

Oh, I know. They made a few tweaks that improved the balance somewhat for Art of War, though for the life of me I can't remember what they were. They used to make a small difference to my strategy when I played online...

iirc, they added cavalry formations. and the ability to group formations togetther into an army formation.
as well as a bunch of new orders, such as "guard"
there may have been balance tweaking, but I do not recall those.

Hearts of Iron II
Best. Grand. Strategy. Game. Ever.
Mein Gott, there's nothing like sitting in your chair for 2 days straight sans toilet breaks to try and make Germany win in 1944-45 against masses of Sovs and Allies from two sides.
Or starting a Communist revolution inside the United States.
Or making France actually stop the Blitzkrieg and declare war on puny Britain.
Or researching nukes as Luxembourg.
There's certainly no less pleasure in that perfect mass calculated Infantry + Armour rush with Aerial and Naval Support.
I've certainly lost days to the game.
Here's to hoping to a good Hearts of Iron III.

Is hearts of iron really that good?..I've looked at it once and I was hardly enamoured, but I didn't read any of the instructions and went in and just got un-wowed. But your description has made me want to look again. I'll read the blurb next time.
For me there are three games that really stand out
X-com Apocalypse - I know its not as good as UFO defence / Enemy unknown, but it had style and the best interception mode. I lost a job because of this game (Not turning up etc).
Civilization 3 - Fantastic, made me realize that the last person you want in power is me. I lost a girlfriend cos of this baby (okay, there were other things to take into consideration).
Masters of Orion 2 - Tak combat, Tak combat, Tak combat...In space...With cats. (Failed two modules and had to retake them cos of this game.)
That's my litany of brilliance and shame.

HoI 2 is GREAT. It's addictive and a game I keep coming back to, although I mostly play modified versions nowadays.
The tutorial and instructions are horrible, though....

I always liked Star Trek Armada II.
Just plain-ole fun being the borg, making mega-cubes by the dozen, ruinating enemies and, most importantly assimilating technologies like cloak from the romulans and ablaitive shielding from the federation.
Borg mega-cube that nobody can see coming + Shielding nobody can break for about 60 seconds = resistance is futile.
Kinda stupid AI, but nothing beats making a huge fleet of ST ships and setting them against the klingons/romulans/borg/species8472 etc...

Rome - Total War, a few units of heavy infantry to hold the line, some archers to reign death and a coupla units of heavy cavalry split into two groups, one to harry the enemies cavalry out of the way and a second geoup for flanking/ wiping out enemy skirmishers. Works fantastically against the gaul and other barbarian nations.
When it comes to crunch time to hit the bruti and scipi (I always play juli) have to really modify your tactics and think a lot more, same for the more advanced greek type nations. Thats when the game gets brilliant for me.

Aye, the steep learning curve makes it difficult to newer players to pick it up. It's Tutorial does not help at all when you jump into the Campaigns or online. You either have to use Pause a lot or slow the time right down to manage to do half the things needed.
@Frook, I would recommend playing it when you have some spare time. It's hard to pick it up if you are juggling work and/or study.

Can't believe I forgot about HoI2! I've only really played it seriously as Japan (and Romania, but they don't really count ), but I've always really enjoyed it. It helped that I had someone to show me how things worked though...don't think I could have picked it up on my own.

I play a lot of Civ. I'm a big expansionist that focuses on defense...at first. Once I evolve into a time when I can build tanks though it's all over. Wave after wave of tank army levels everything in it's path while claiming new cities part of my empire.

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."
I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

Which version of Civ do you play? I used to be a big expansionist on Civ III, but in Civ IV they seem to have managed to make it less of a productive strategy. I have a tendency to not build enough defences and then get overwhelmed by the aggressive computer opponents - on the third difficulty level, they can be pretty strong. But I can usually hold my own - at the moment it's about the right setting for me, if I get a few more wins there I'll bump it up a notch. I keep finding myself tempted to go for a Culture victory - sometimes it pans out, othertimes I start too late and someone ends up sending off a spaceship first .

I play Civ IV usually on setting 3 or 4 depending on how serious of a game I'm looking for. I'll generally play as the Americans since I can expand quicker. I focus on technology early on so I get a good leap ahead of most of the AI. They USUALLY won't start attacking right away so I can get away with it...usually.
EDIT: Spies are great for haulting production on overzealous neighbors that want the technology win.

if you haven't played the Galactic Civilizations games they're pretty fun
Multiple victory paths, research trees, diplomacy etc etc etc. Turn based strategy but still cool
In no. 2 you can use a ship builder to customize every ship in your fleet. Kinda neat that way.
Plus the AI is fucking great. If you waste even a couple turns on nothing you get fucked royally by all the computer players. I've actually only won like 2 or 3 times out of 50 with the AI turned on full blast. Its a game I always go back to for my 4x strategy fix.
Another fantastic series of strategy games in the 4x genre are the Heroes of Might and Magic games. I've only played 1,2 and 4 to death because I didn't have a computer when 3 came out. The AI in 4 is pretty freakin' solid (for an average strategy game player like me) and HOMM5 got decent reviews too.
