How are you folks getting along in the North East? Just buckle down and wait it out. And get prepared for some shoveling.
It's been awhile, but I remember over a weekend here a blizzard dropped 28 inches of snow. The army had their snow cat vehicles running on tracks (instead of wheels) rescuing people on the interstate. A married couple died in their vehicle, and they were only like a football pitch or so away from their front door, but due to no visibility because of blizzard/white out conditions, they didn't know how close they were, stayed in the car, and were over come by carbon monoxide caused by snow blocking their exhaust. When it blew through, I had to break trail down to the mail box, and our large dog at the time (a rottweiler) could only follow in the path I made (snow was about hip high). Crazy memories.
Not very far northeast, but I finally got around to putting up heavy drapes last night. (Had already spent hours over the last week applying insulating plastic and thermal tape around the windows and door... still draughty after that. Victorian-era apartment building. Found some actual holes in the poorly-sealed weird elevated former porch area they turned into a large barred window, filled them with insulating foam and taped them over.) I'm not supposed to make any holes in the walls, and I'm concerned about holes allowing cold air in anyway, so getting the heavy drapes to stay up was a bit of a challenge. After ample trial and error I managed to do it with a long floor-to-ceiling pole lamp going diagonally into a top corner bass trap at one end, a tripod on a chair against a wall propping up the other corner, and a bass trap taped over that, with the sagging middle pressed against the wall by a large cardboard box I managed to squeeze between the two bass traps. Looks ridiculously byzantine (abstract art curtains held by a huge floating cardboard box that has a sack of golf clubs on the side), but amuses me. Thought it might be my farewell to natural light for a while but the drapes actually let a decent amount of light through.
Can still feel some cold air flowing over my hands but it's not nearly as bad (for now, at least...). Much easier to practice the Seaboard (and much easier to type without heavy gloves...). Around here it should be much warmer by Wednesday or Thursday.
Still a little worried that huge box and/or the poles will fall down. Going to check on the tape soon, fill cardboard boxes with old clothes I won't wear for a while, and stack the boxes against the outdoor-adjacent walls of the porch (can still feel cold air coming in there, though I taped over the bottom areas with multiple layers), while I wait for more thermal drapes to arrive (plan is to use the boxes to hold the drapes against the wall).
In the meantime going barehanded has gone from painful and verging on frostnip to only mildly uncomfortable and numbing.
