Take a second date. See how it goes. Firsts in that situation are almost always awkward. If it went fairly well, it is worth a second.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

went on a date last night.
I don't go on dates very often and this is the first time I've went on a date with someone I really don't don't know. Its always been someone I already knew, or at least we had a load of common acquaintances. But anyway, she was a lovely girl, very talkative, which is good because (despite what some people here who have met me might think) I am generally quite a quiet person, and have no problem sitting in silence for long periods of time (I've been drunk at the bbqs and when I met morgy in oslo).
Absolutely beautiful blue eyes and a wonderful happy smile, and comes with impressive tracts of land.
we went out for dinner and a few drinks (I only had one as I was driving) and got one fairly well, although her love of soaps and insistence that the acting in them was excellent was somewhat baffling.
But there was something niggling me at the back of my head the whole way home after I had dropped her off, I couldn't figure it out until this morning.

Her smile, eyes and general mannerisms are incredibly like one of my ex girlfriends (the one that broke up with me, much to my dismay at the time) and I got to thinking then about (once I had done the whole shaking my fist at the sky and moping over her for a year) how we weren't overly compatible in the long run because of our differences. I think this girl may have a similar set of differences from me (and strikes me as quite a girly girl, I'd much rather a tomboy type). Is there any real point in seeing her again? am I being too hasty in this judgement?

You can’t know after one date only. Give it a few more, in different circumstances (venues)and see how it is. It actually sounds like she and you got along pretty well, so that’s a good sign. You and whoever you end up with will never seen eye to eye on everything (my wife like Greys Anatomy and bad romantic Christmas TV movies for example). It is what it is. But yeah, give it another go man!

I definitely think the amount of positives you're mentioning make it worth a second date - you don't have to share everything in terms of likes and dislikes (the soap thing would make me raise an eyebrow too, but everyone's different!). I think if after maybe a second or third date you're still feeling uneasy or that there is too much in terms of difference, then I think you can be a little more sure than after just the one.

Messing with my groove? Dad's op tomorrow afternoon. I'm off work and am spending the day at the bird of prey centre to keep my mind occupied. I did the round of messages to people saying I would let them know when I knew anything but otherwise not to expect to hear from me as I'll be quiet.

Two friends give a cursory response only for the first to launch into "it's been one of those weekends y'know?" over some work related triviality and the other to send walls of text about her impending divorce and lean on me like I can fix it - this isn't new, but I would have thought she might have had more sense than to do so this weekend of all times. With a cursory "I know you've got stuff going on" in there somewhere.

Usually I'm a pretty sympathetic person. Today I wanted to scream at the pair of them. I would have thought the fact I do not have the space in my head to be anyone's lean-to right now wasn't something requiring explanation. I opted for putting the phone out of sight before I threw it. I'm sure I'll look back from the right side of the operation feeling like this was unreasonable, but at the moment it just feels like my brain will explode.

Hannah, can you not, I dunno, train one of those hawks to, I dunno, attack people when they're being like that?

I mean it might help your own state of mind? (Full disclosure: I'm not a therapist, it might not do that...)

Family.

To give some context:

2007, mum has an affair with dad's sister's husband (Paul). My parents commence divorce.

2010, mum and Paul marry. Sisters begin to be iffy with dad.

Fast forward to now, sisters are entirely estranged from dad. One gets married this Saturday, dad won't be there because he's tired of always trying to make an effort when they refuse to do so. Dad's wife has just had some shitty news from the hospital (why the hell am I watching Your Lie in April right now?) and they don't want my sisters knowing because they've basically disowned dad for what amounts to no foreseeable reason. So the entire wedding (and obviously situation with dad's wife) has me incredibly stressed out.

A friend of mine was just complaining about this the other day. People are always unloading on her and not returning the favor or even offering consideration that maybe she is not always available or able to be their support. She is going though her own family issues at the moment now. I think she is realizing, and I think it applies to you, that you have to be more forceful about your own health and wellbeing. She is good at being other people support and people will take that support when offered and come to rely on it. She does it because she cares but she is realizing now that she needs to be careful.

Don't tempt me. I think it might be slightly illegal - but that makes it no less appealing right now :)

I suspect you're on to something there. The divorce friend is a very tunnel visioned person when something is happening to her - she can be something of a martyr and because it's all consuming for her she expects beck and call from everyone when she wants to vent.

I'm not good at saying "no" - and particularly not at the moment because my temper is such that I think "no" would become "eff off" before I'd got hold of it. It is something to think about certainly though. Thanks for the food for thought Cause :)

The op is today (Monday)?

I'll be thinking of your dad.

I know the feeling, my dad has been in and out of the hospital a number of times in the past years due too several issues and underwent a few surgery's.

What really baffles me how inept some doctor's are.

The lung specialist send my dad through to the throat, nose and ears specialist last December saying that when his sinus issues aren't fixed his lungs won't become healthy enough again since the state of the sinuses effects his lungs. She was sure that the other specialist would perform the necessary surgery (cleaning out the sinuses and widening them in needed).

My dad gets to the other specialist and that one prescribes him a nasal spray (the very same one he's been using for years already) telling him to apply it in a different way e.g. lying in your bed on your back with you head over the edge leaning backwards and to come back after a month if this hasn't helped. The lung specialist was just as baffled as were we by this.

Fast forward a month my dad comes back to the very surprised TNE specialist (no clue how you call them in the UK) telling him that it didn't work (surprise, surprise).

My dad get's put down for surgery with a waiting period of three months (if he had been put down for it right away my dad would have been halfway the waiting period by then).

He undergoes a special nuclear examination of his lungs to see if he has embolism and so on.

We received good knows about that thankfully.

Meanwhile another issue appears, they suspect his his heart.

Another special nuclear examination follows, this time for his heart.

The surgery for his sinuses are put on hold.

The results get back and while there is a minor issue with his heart it isn't the cause of his latest issue.

They know suspect his esophagus and have given him medicines against heartburn.

What messes with my groove;

The kids next door have come outside while we are enjoying the sunny weather. On goes the headphones.
Sappers have a saying, he muttered. "Wide eyed stupid"

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

As long as it didn’t pass the Turing test we can all sleep soundly tonight. I still worry about nanobots though.

Yeah, give it another shot!

I find it amusing that you'd describe yourself as a quiet person. I guess we need to meet up again as my memories of you do not entirely fit that description :D
