My mental health is in a nosedive today. Everything is still closed due to COVID, it’s -20 with the wind chill so even doing something outside bundled up is a task, the kids are struggling to be entertained indoors, I have some winter allergies acting up, and we are still struggling with the prospect of home purchase withmarket so unbelievably out of everyone’s reach.

I can empathize with you on all that. I'm sorry.

Want a fun game to play with kids? Have them separately come up with Top 5 lists of things - sandwiches, animals, colors etc and then give mini show and tells about them.

That’s a great idea, I’ll try it! Thanks!

Did something to my right side trapezius on Friday night as I slept. It's really painful now, can't turn my head left, basically feels like a whiplash injury. Easing off a little now but I'm pretty much unable to do anything substantial.

I apparently wasn’t direct enough the first time I told this fucking woman to leave my firewood alone. I discovered last nights designated sticks vanished along with my sitting plank to. It was trash day Monday(I wasn’t burning in that location that night due to rain) which tells me 99 to 1 that bitch came back in my yard with her trash can. I thought I was clear the last time to leave my firewood the fuck alone.. I will have to explain again. Even though I didn’t see it it’s not hard to put 2&2 together.

Also today an explosion at one of the plants rocked everything for a good 30-50 mile radius prompting a FB craze and mushroom cloud. It was not cool. Ground shook.

Also whatever your version of "slummy parenting" is, don't be afraid to do it just to get through. There's no way your kids will be irreversibly harmed by a few weeks of junk food and excessive screen time or whatever it is that keeps them happy. You can do the "correct parenting" thing when your head feels better.

How are you folks getting along in the North East? Just buckle down and wait it out. And get prepared for some shoveling.

It's been awhile, but I remember over a weekend here a blizzard dropped 28 inches of snow. The army had their snow cat vehicles running on tracks (instead of wheels) rescuing people on the interstate. A married couple died in their vehicle, and they were only like a football pitch or so away from their front door, but due to no visibility because of blizzard/white out conditions, they didn't know how close they were, stayed in the car, and were over come by carbon monoxide caused by snow blocking their exhaust. When it blew through, I had to break trail down to the mail box, and our large dog at the time (a rottweiler) could only follow in the path I made (snow was about hip high). Crazy memories.

Not very far northeast, but I finally got around to putting up heavy drapes last night. (Had already spent hours over the last week applying insulating plastic and thermal tape around the windows and door... still draughty after that. Victorian-era apartment building. Found some actual holes in the poorly-sealed weird elevated former porch area they turned into a large barred window, filled them with insulating foam and taped them over.) I'm not supposed to make any holes in the walls, and I'm concerned about holes allowing cold air in anyway, so getting the heavy drapes to stay up was a bit of a challenge. After ample trial and error I managed to do it with a long floor-to-ceiling pole lamp going diagonally into a top corner bass trap at one end, a tripod on a chair against a wall propping up the other corner, and a bass trap taped over that, with the sagging middle pressed against the wall by a large cardboard box I managed to squeeze between the two bass traps. Looks ridiculously byzantine (abstract art curtains held by a huge floating cardboard box that has a sack of golf clubs on the side), but amuses me. Thought it might be my farewell to natural light for a while but the drapes actually let a decent amount of light through.

Can still feel some cold air flowing over my hands but it's not nearly as bad (for now, at least...). Much easier to practice the Seaboard (and much easier to type without heavy gloves...). Around here it should be much warmer by Wednesday or Thursday.

Still a little worried that huge box and/or the poles will fall down. Going to check on the tape soon, fill cardboard boxes with old clothes I won't wear for a while, and stack the boxes against the outdoor-adjacent walls of the porch (can still feel cold air coming in there, though I taped over the bottom areas with multiple layers), while I wait for more thermal drapes to arrive (plan is to use the boxes to hold the drapes against the wall).

In the meantime going barehanded has gone from painful and verging on frostnip to only mildly uncomfortable and numbing.

Only in America can the guy behind the popeyes counter and a homeless person fight over who has more money.

‘You can’t afford the weed I smoke’ - Popeye

‘I gave away more money than you will ever make’ - homeless guys

I asked for my food and bolted and left as the Maher was trying to explain to the employee that there really is no point to winning this fight.

5 dollars for a meal is a great deal but maybe I should spend more.

Worth it though if you ask for extra Megan Thee Stallion Hottie Sauce so you can use it latter on your own concoctions.

You've probably seen this already---recent surveillance camera footage from a Philadelphia Popeyes:

String of armed robberies at fast food restaurants in Philadelphia.

There's a pay what you wish (down to 0---not negative numbers though) restaurant within easy walking distance in case I'm ever broke.

Difficult to capture it all in a single photo.

Still in the process of adding cardboard boxes, figuring out what to fill them with... back aching, ugh. I've put most of the old cat stuff I haven't given away yet up there. (Not the cardboard box containing her fur and claws though.)

Very interesting, but I think you underestimate the power of "resize". ;)

Work changed my job title. Pay is the same, responsibilities are the same but I went from:

Field application and sales scientist

To

Technical sales specialist

I feel like the previous title was the better one to have on a business card, resume or LinkedIn profile but maybe I’m just imagining it

Guess you already tried asking if you could keep the job title you agreed to?

Wonder why they did it... might have thought they'd get more applicants?

Was just about to stop procrastinating (doomscrolling the news mostly), went to the bathroom one last time, and my god-forsaken toilet seat broke---front third flew off. Dug out some old unopened superglue to try to get it back on; tried to be extra careful because I don't want to superglue the seat to the bowl (or my fingers, or the lid)---would barely squeeze out, seemed to do nothing after holding it for twice the recommended time. Ordered new fancy superglue for one-day delivery. Tried looking up model number, but it looks like it's standardized---but there are two standards, round and elongated. Tried to picture in my head and thought 'round', but when I looked at it, thought 'no it's clearly not a circle, it's elongated'. Measured it and was surprised to find it was much closer to circular than it looked, just slightly elongated. Found a website explaining length standard for round vs elongated and how to measure. Found a 'long-lasting', supposedly universal and easy-snap-install round toilet replacement for one-day delivery. When oh when are my (benign) smart-home robo-overlords?... 'The waste remains, the waste remains and spills'....

Yes, there's zero point in gluing a toilet seat back together. Getting a new one is absolutely the right move. It's super easy to replace a toilet seat that's not snap on.

Even buffets in the Philadelphia suburbs aren't safe... not that it will dissuade my elderly father from going to them (my mother never wanted to eat at buffets because of germs, so she's been staying in, but he'll most likely give her omicron):

So according to that interview he didn't cut in line or get preferential treatment, just ordered his steak rare... so he says.

One time at a diner in Philadelphia I did see someone run in pick up a chair whack someone over the head with it a few times then run out (being chased by other people...). Another time I was part of a (zombie) pub crawl that had reserved entry to a nightclub that doesn't have a separate VIP line, long line outside because they were near capacity and waiting for our (large) group, a Black guy in line tried to walk in behind us and on being denied by the bouncer (also Black) got enraged and punched him in the face several times before getting pushed away. (Thought he might have perceived it as racial discrimination---most of the pub crawl group was non-Black, and wearing white zombie face paint iirc. Man accused of unjustly getting his steak before others looks like a light-skinned Latinx person and some of the brawl participants were Black so I wonder if they thought it was racial discrimination.) Bouncer looked furious but stayed at his post. I was worried that guy would come back with a gun, as happened at a strip club a few blocks away from me (several deaths).

Fewer shootings in the suburbs at least....

'In viral footage of the fight, [...] a man can be heard saying, "All I wanted was some steak!"'
