On my way back now.

She was doing much better than I feared. I think a nights rest helped her a lot. Her arm is blue and yellow and it hurts to move too much but otherwise she was happy enough.

Glad to hear she's doing okay man. Scary stuff indeed!

Same. The 'older relative takes a fall' thing is a personal dread of mine too.

I appear to be developing a rather significant wrinkle between my eyebrows! I think it’s from reading in bed, using phone in bed. I can see my reflection in the screen somewhere and the wrong Kyle becomes pronounced.

Am I old?

The rain.

It just stresses me out hugely now. Granted, the roof is being done in the next week or so but any time it rains just now is making my head spin.

I genuinely wonder why people continue to live in the crash zone of these storms.

Like fuck that

Living in Townsville I always wondered why houses were built out of anything other than reinforced concrete.

It's like people who build in floodplains and then wonder why they got flooded.
Even if the developers and council reckon their mitigation measures can put up with anything except maybe a 1 in 100 or so year events, nature always looks at that shit and goes "Challenge accepted."

Live in Tornado Alley - why is your place made of wood?

It's because to build properly it's more expensive. People essentially are playing the odds due to cost. And these days it looks like those odds are constantly shortening.

If I had the money to build, I'd build it right first time even if it's extra.

@BK - with your place getting redone, is it now a case of total rebuild? Built to improved code levels?
I hope things are OK with you, or at the best end of the scale.

Woke up this morning, saw my father, the first words out of his mouth were that my grandmother passed away.

I don't know how to feel, since she's been struggling with Alzheimer's for the past, I want to say 5? years and she has long been past the point of recalling any of her family. Last time I saw her was 3 years ago, and during our 2 week stay she might've recognized me once. She was not the strong, honest, faithful person I admired and looked up to throughout childhood.

And I kinda accepted she never would be again. As my dad put it "her suffering came to an end". But I still can't get rid of the sadness.

Sorry to hear that, Ment :(

But also, what BK said: she was still your grandmother. My grandmother died over ten years ago. She also had Alzheimer's and while she also barely remembered me the last time I saw her, I'm still sad after all this time.

Thanks guys. It's a very weird day, as my phone is bursting with notifications of happy wishes, but inside I have no idea how to feel. About any of it.

My grandmother is sliding through the stages of Alzheimer's now. There's been personality changes, oddly for the nicer bc she was not a nice person before, and lots of physical frailty and memory issues that mean she can't recognize someone she doesn't deal with multiple times a day for months.

I can't be that person to her. My parents can and they've taken her in.

The disease does steal them away from us and us from them before they die.

I'm sorry for the years of suffering and her passing away.

Just found out my grandmother hurt her arm pretty badly waking up at 400 am and banging her hand and arms on a counter to demand food.

Sorry to hear that Ment. BK is right though, hold on to those memories of the strong woman you remember from your childhood.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

sorry to hear that, amph. Unfortunately, once they've got it, they become more and more like children. It's heartbreaking, I know.

Okay guys, I'm not a pity party, victim card, boo hoo me sort of guy. But I's just gots to get this groove messin' with off my chest. So a screwed up buddy of mine sent me this link about information regarding superspreader info. Well, dumbass me, I should have known any link from this knuckle head would not be legit, but I cllcked it anyway. Yeeesh, it was bad. So the porn world, as the porn world does, ran with the idea of "superspreader" and made a lovely movie based around that concept. My eyes! *grabs-bleach I can't unsee those screen shots! Something is wrong with me today. I have this massive urge just to leave and disappear into a long, lone road trip. It's a beautiful fall day here with all the trappings like wind, low-light sunniness, scattered clouds, wood-smoke smells. I think that is getting in my head and triggering memories of younger days among other things. It is just a pit-of-the-stomach ache and urge to flee.

My wife is not helping currently as well. Walked into the kitchen and found the gas stove still on but the fire blown out by the wind. I texted her to let her know and instead of something like "omg, sorry" or "everything ok?" I get, "I thought you turned it off." She was the one cooking dinner and the last to be next to the pot. So writing this here on the forum rather than snipping back at her with "an apologetic tone and statement of trying to prevent this in the future wouldn't go amiss."

And I still feel that background sense (without reason or target) of needing to get the fuck out of here.

Is there anything you can do to put that energy and irritation to good use that might help purge it for the time being?
Like, chop some wood or something? Home gym?

Nothing quite like a zen mind poo for catharsis.

There is a support group for this. It's called 'everybody'.

We used to meet at a bar but the pandemic fucked that up so now we mostly complain on the internet and watch cartoons.:)
