On 4th episode of Titans.

Rachel/Raven comes across a bunch of weird people living at some weirdo doctors house.

Is Rita meant to be Clayface I wonder?

And who is Doctor Caulder? I assume his freak show is from DC comics?

The entire group is The Doom Patrol, an old school DC property that may have bin a lame attempt at ripping off the Xmen back in the 70s but evolved into something better, then weirder. Rita is not Clayface tho they went a very odd direction from her comic version. Gar/Changeling/Best Boy did originate from them before he joins the Teen Titans.

The Doom Patrol in their own series. Anyone seen this yet? Looks like it might be OK.

Watched Part 1 of Leaving Neverland. Couldn't do both in one sitting. I won't go into the details. What I will say is back in the day, particularly the two higher profile accusations, I remember the big narrative push was always money hungry parents pushing their kids into MJ's life, via Neverland Ranch, so they could score a payday. And it seemed to rely, simultaneously, on taking advantage of poor sweet messed up Peter Pan obsessed Michael AND blaming the parents for putting their kids in that situation in the first place -- and regardless of how contradictory those two things are, it was the parents who were the monsters, not MJ. Well, the stories of Rob and Jimmy here are distinctly and unassailably not that, and leave pretty much no room for doubt. I don't even know what to expect from Part 2, cuz it's already hellish.

I haven't watched the documentary yet but it's certainly created waves. I considered making a discussion board topic about boycotting artists/creators who do something criminal/controversial but I was too lazy.

It's an interesting topic that I've thought about a lot, off and on, and I can't help but think it will always be situational down to the individual (for both the celeb and the consumer). Some lines being more universal than others. I can't think of an artist that it's "more easily said than done" than MJ, though...he's both universal and, to put it bluntly, dead. So boycotting seems different here than it does for, say, R. Kelly. But at the same time I can't help but think there's going to be a big society-wide withdrawal from him too...like not using his music in commercials, on movie soundtracks, on the radio, cover songs, karaoke, what have you. Nobody ever disappears anymore, and MJ certainly isn't going to, but his universality is going to wane imo. This movie is a tipping point for that.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I'll probably watch it eventually.

The Cosby Show is still going in rerun perpetuity, so I don't see all that much impact to MJs legacy as a musician/performer. Not sure if there is much revelatory about it myself. It's been well known for quite some time now that Michael Jackson diddled little boys. I mean a man in his 30s and 40s sleeping in bed with boys had to be a red flag for someone, right? But, you know, blinded by celebrity, almost deity like adulation and so forth and I guess it can happen. Google his trial of mid 2000s and see the fan support clamoring for his innocence (doves being released for each 'not guilty' announced for charges, and all the other hullabaloo).

Finished Part 2. I will say now the total length is more than justified. And the second half actually covers a lot of what Malan mentions above. I found Part 2 an even tougher watch than the first half, though I imagine that'll be totally subjective. Taken as a whole, this movie isn't necessarily profound in the way When the Levees Broke or OJ: Made In America were. But it is cogent, comprehensive, frank, and humane from top to bottom. And harrowing.

I finished the Umbrella Academy. I liked it. Never read the comics, so everything was pretty surprising.

The only complaint... I have Sinnerman stuck in my head and a deep seated need to watch The Thomas Crown Affair.

Next week is the season finale of The Passage, a 2 hour episode. It's been pretty good so far. I was hoping for a little more action this episode, but overall I've enjoyed the show.

Same I really enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing where it goes. The characters were all suitably mad/messed up/fun and I think the Hazel and Cha Cha story was great to watch.

Onto Titans next I think.

Seriously? You guys didn't think Umbrella Academy was sort of disappointing? From the intro I expected X-Men, instead we got a bunch of weak misfits. Only teleporting kid was really impressive.

I mean, it's based on a comic written by Gerard Way, lead singer of the post-pop punk emo band My Chemical Romance...if you didn't think it was going to be about weak misfits, I dunno what to tell you. :)

I still like that album. I don't like any of MCR's other albums, but Black Parade...I like. I have no reason or clue why.

Ugh I could never stand MCR but then I was in my "emo is the enemy of metal" phase...

I did want to see more power being used but I kind of liked the fact that they were messed up humans before they were superheroes.

I just watched Part 1 of Leaving Neverland too. Channel hopping and curiosity drew me in. Like Malankazooie says there is nothing new to learn but actually the extent of how he drew these kids and their parents in and how pathological it was is revelatory.

Harrowing but the subjects are very personable and believable. The matter-of-fact way they describe it all is quite astounding.

I've been working a lot on solo projects the last few weeks and listening to old playlists to entertain myself. MJ has been a part of it. I don't think anyone can watch the film and then happily listen anymore.

If it does one thing "new" -- which isn't really the right term, but in terms of why the movie is valuable beyond giving victims a voice -- it does away once and for all with the notion that his accusers were people who wedged themselves into his life in order to take advantage of him. That narrative just doesn't fly anymore, period. And without it, the rest kind of falls away too.

It's very similar to the Jimmy Saville scandal in the UK with this molester hiding in plain sight. How they get away with it for so long is absolutely bonkers in hindsight. Collective turning a blind eye to the obvious. But as someone who was around 8 years old when Bad came out he really was catnip to kids, especially the boys in my class at school. And also the weight that people put in Macaulay Culkin always denying he was abused - he didn't molest a film star kid so there's no way he would molest a little nobody kid either. The two things are incongruous when you get down to it.

Sorry accidental neg rep instead of positive. I will adjust it.

I thought it started strong and devolved into a farce. As you say for super heroes they were in the end kinda lame. The most powerful member 'I heard a rumour' even refuses to use her power in the one fight!

However the final revelation was also so obvious!

perhaps not so bad that I regret watching it but definitely not what I was hoping for
