Admiral Nok's wife was Hawl, not the book Night of Knives "Nok".
She was the severely injured mage in the group of malazans with Traveller who Crokus/Cutter found to help Andaris on Drift Avali when the Edur first attacked there.
Anyway, you will certainly enjoy the NoK book when you get it!

Who was Ameron?

Ameron's name has been dropped-in a few times in the series as one of the 'Old Guard'.
there's also Ameron (Recruiting sergeant) who recruited 'Sorry/not apsalar'.
And Ameron the Councilor/Politician of some sort that comes to take charge of Black coral after the Pannion's departure.
Some people on the boards think their all one and the same, me? not to sure. But if he were i'd change my name.

Isn't WJ referred to as Dujek's superior right at the start of GotM? I can't check as I have lent my copy to someone else.
Also, Duiker was part of the "Old Guard" as spoken about in HoC, by Nok, p296.

Except Duiker just describes himself to be a soldier that rose from the ranks, so while he may be "old guard", he's not been around since the begginng like some of the other characters.

I think the councilor/politician is Aragan.. SE's private joke...

pff, he should've made the joke clearer and called him Aragarn then

nah, the joke is that Aragan is in the background of every major event, always having headaches, and always rising in rank with each appearance.
there was some (very non-serious) speculation a while back that the last lines of the Crippled God would consist of "Emperor Aragan sat on the Malazan throne, rubbing his temple, cursing his headache"
p.s. - isn't it mentioned that Dujek was a message boy who ran errands for Kellanved and Dancer back when they took up residence in the deadhouse?

yup, in Noks rundown of the family it mentions dujek the boy.
note: the "family"- kellenved, dancer, dassem, surly, urko, cartheron, nok, hawl, dujek errand boy (maybe forgot someone, but its the people who resided in the deadhouse before they expanded off malaz)
"old guard" others that were around during the malazan rise to power- WJ, gesler, stormy, duiker etc etc. *includes "family"

This is interesting, because when Nok is explaining things about the family to Tavore HoC, he tells her that Hawl died in some early battle. I'd forgotten about her appearing later in the book and now wonder if Nok knows she survived?

If my wife's name was "Hawl"...which reminds me too much of Howl...then I probably would not bee in too much of a hurry to find here again.
On a different note, is it not mentioned that Baudins (sp) father was old guard? Or should I lay off the beer?

I think they mention that he was a real hard nut, and that if Baudin younger was as hard as his dad he would have better protected Felisin. The claw hunted him down over four night and he killed shit loads of them in the process. Can't rmember if they said he was old guard or not, though, but def a Talon.

Baudins father was a Talon. Don't know if he was connected to the Old Guard.

Just one thing if Dujek was part of the old crowd then how did WJ get promoted to commander and Dujek a lesser officer in his army??

I don't know that there is a quote saying how Whiskeyjack became Dujek's superior officer. I got the sense that WJ was only a mid-level officer when the Bridgeburners first formed, and the success of that unit led to him gaining a lot of respect, and probably high rank as well.

i think the way it happened was WJ came along while dujek was a teenager after the conquering of quon tali perhaps, became a high fist, was really really good but then got busted down when laseen took the throne. dujek came of age and took over.
