Well Fiddler's memories did form the basis for the song and all that, but I just reread the end of MoI and no matter what Kimloc did, Paran's blessing was to all BBs that ever were, so I guess that's our proof right there.

well, the two atually complement each other...
I mean, we don't really know the limit of Paran's power but i still find it hard to believe that he could impact ascendancy on someone he never even heard of..
Of course, now that I think about it, before his assignment, Lorn had him learn the entire history of the BBs.. so he probably knew them almost as well as Fiddler...

I believe that Paran's "blessing" of the BBs just parted the fabric around the deck for them, so to speak. It was Kimloc's cyclical sorcery that imparted ascendancy to them. And that sorcery affected, through Fiddler, the entirety of the BB ranks.

Paran basically just sanctioned theyre appearance in the Deck, as he did for the House of Chains, except he made the card too, because they didnt have their own Munug, or whatever he was called.

I strongly doubt that he made the cards for the House of War- he barely even realized what his blessing would do.
But I'm pretty sure that the deck decides for itself, and when a new power appears, the cards also come into being. remember the Knight of Shadow card with Trull on it--T'amber didn't make it, and I strongly doubt that Paran was aware of the existance of Trull... but the card was still there..

Okay,
Here is my two sense on the ranking. I don't have my books here, but I know that WJ was a high ranking official in the BB. Definatley above Dujek at the time. As well Dujek was a young soldier in the Malazan army early on with Dukier, because he lost his arm saving Dukier (Ref in DHG). So I think they were both there near the inception of the Malazan empire but were low ranking soldiers at the time

You'd think Laseen would find it suspicious that so many of her predecessors loyalists just went missing. If she still thinks Urko, Cartheron, Dassem (maybe she wouldn't know about dassem) Toc Sr. and the rest are dead, then that's silly. If I were her, i'd do a li'l gravedigging.

well, if Laseen really wants to find out if they're dead (I'm not that sure about, I still believe Laseen is just a part in a giant sceme, and knows exactly what happened to all those guys... off course, I haven't read NoK yet, maybe that would open my eyes
) she'll have tried real hard by now... and off course, the people she'd try to find would be exquisite at hiding for her. So her gravedigging wouldn't help anyways.
But as I said before... I believe Laseen knows exactly where they are (sort of) and just plays along in a giant game we can't even grasp the size of...

Perhaps the whole point of it is so people think that she thinks that they think that she thinks they dont think she knows where they think they are.
It would certainly explain a lot.
It would certainly explain a lot.
"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

@ McFlury- read NoK
@ AIJ: don't think so. Laseen's not necessarily stupid (i'm pretty sure she set up the stuff at the nd of tBH to get rid of Rel's claws. for instance), but she lost a lot of her lines to the higher planes, if that makes any sense. She's preoccupied with Earthly matters, while the Shadowy Duo's playing a different game...
(of course, well see tons more of Laseen in RotCG, and that could prove me to be totally wrong)
