Yeah, the whole fight Rogan was calling out Shogun's shots and several times I more or less missed those but saw Machida's that landed. Still think Shogun won though. Is it correct that the judges are all former boxing judges? They seem to be underestimating the damage of leg kicks (and grappling other than takedowns).

Edit: this is Dana on the fight. I doubt he's entirely disappointed that he gets Machida-Shogun 2 to sell though. Surprisingly harsh on Mazzagatti.

Edit 2: doesn't link directly to correct clip it seems, but you can click on it from that page.

Wow, exciting fight. Both Fedor and Rogers impressed me. Shields was a bore, I'm all for a good ground fight but that was a wrestling match. If you are going to try to GnP people do some damage. Massoui looks good, that guy has some skills.

UK people, tell me you caught the undercard of UFC 105?

So many finishes. Hardy surprised me - looks like he put on 15 pounds of muscle and managed to make the cut routine. Kang is an idiot. Mike Brown is nasty. Vera won that fight. Pearson looked fearsome. I wanted to make that rhyme...

For a free card, that was a great night of fights. I love Randy, but really don't think he won that fight. I don't think he did either. I fault vera though, he had the skills to pull the trigger and dominate and never did.

Did anyone else find themselves rooting for Bisping last night in spite of themselves? I sure did. Never rooted for him before in my life.

I really want to hear the details about what is wrong with Lesner. If the rumormill is to be believed he migh have a career ending illness. Weak.

EA sports mma game looks sweet. I'm not sure if the actual fighting controls will be good or not, and the roster looks weak, but damn it's pretty.

Kang has a black belt, is a skilled striker, has good conditioning and the testicular fortitude of an amateur. It's like he gets overwhelmed in the ring and can't push through adversity to stay in the fight. I actually counted on Bisping winning, but by decision, since I didn't think he had the punching power or the submission skills to finish Kang.

Best conjecture I've heard is that Lesnar got pneumonia along with the mononucleosis. We'll have to wait and see how things turn out. Are we back to Carwin v. Cain now?

I heard Carwin hurt his knee, or is taking the opportunity to get surgery on an old injury.

Talked to Dr. Luxury Wife about Lesner, she says there is a strain of hepatitis you can get from mono. It's not the "bad" hep that would be a career ender, but it fits with the secrecy from his camp. Even though it isn't a kind of hep that would keep him from fighting as it is not chronic, I would imagine a fighter wouldn't want that info going through the rumor mill. So, that's a possibility.

What a brutally sweet finish from Siver. Broken ribs and cheekbone for Pearson will keep him out for 8 months......... That sucks big time for him

EDIT: Paul Kelly I should say......

Also, awesome night of fights tonight!!!

Houston Alexander, without his vaunted aggression, is a bum. Slice looked the best he's ever been, but still pulls his big punches back before letting them loose, still gets winded easily and has zero lateral movement ability. He gets stomped by any 205'er willing to take the fight to him. Forget fighting at heavyweight for him.

Hamill did alright up until he got taken down. I think he dislocated his shoulder at that point and let Jones wreak havoc on him. Jones seemed to forget his jab and beautiful right straight in this fight. The opening high kick was awesome though.

Roy Nelson is awesome. He came out to Weird Al's "I'm Fat", knocked the hell out of a guy with a pretty good reach advantage on him and then did the belly jiggle after. I'd still like to see him 20 to 25 pounds lighter, so he can slip those punches better. He'd beat the hell out of Rothwell now, I think. I wonder how he'd do against Herring.

Marcus Jones has the worst stand-up of anyone not named Dean Lister and Dean might still beat him in a kickboxing match. Ugh.

McSweeney doesn't deserve anything, despite looking much better in his time post-filming. He, Schoonover, Marcus Jones and the rest can go disperse amongst the minor leagues.

Yeah, don't really see anyone but Nelson becoming anything important in the division.

You can get a really big spleen from mono. The usual recommendation is "to avoid contact sports" to avoid a rupture. If that is what Lesnar has it would be kind of awkward for him and Christmas for his opponents. Removing the spleen can be done laparoscopically, and you wont miss it much, so my guess is that is what he is going to do.

I actually like the rudiments of Schaub's boxing. With a couple years spent in the minors, honing his game at a good gym, he can come back for sure and do alright. He probably won't ever hold the belt, but he'll cause problems for people with his hand speed and ability to get back up..

Interesting info. Has he made a public statement then? Shouldn't be much of a problem for his career if that is the case.

The surgery for diverticulitis can lead to a lifetime colostomy bag depending on how much of your intestine they remove. Could make fighting akward if that's the case for Lesnar.

On a lighter note,

With a perforation, yes, but that's fairly rare and even with the need for a colostomy it's usually temporary. Imagine discussing this in an MMA-thread :)

It's not just with a perforation. A friendo f mine recently had this operation. They told him if they had to take out more than a certain amount, I think it was something like 1.5 or 2 feet of colon, it was the bag forever.

Edit: not going to comment any further on diverticulitis treatment in an MMA-thread on an SE-forum though it has a nice surreal charm to it :)

Some exciting fights coming up this Saturday...

Penn VS Sanchez -- this could really be the hardest (lightweight) fight Penn has ever had

Mir VS Kongo --- Im a huge Mir fan, so im hoping to see a bad ass submission... im worried for him though, Kongo has had a few flops lately but is still a damn beast

Kenny Florian VS Clay Guida --- this is a great match up and should be a damn bad ass fight, im interested to see how Ken Flo looks after his loss to Penn a few months ago.

other match ups should be interesting Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve

Alan Belcher VS Wilson Gouveia

all the makings of a damn good PPV...

Next month doesnt excite me to much... its kind of a blah card as of now.

Oh and I went and watched some local ammy fights this past Sunday... It was alot better then i thought... some damn good fights, i had 2 friends fighting, the one from my gym lost a decision (man he was busted up, but he showed heart and put on a damn good show, needs to really ask himself if he wants to be a fighter... also needs more cardio)
My other friend won his fight, got the guy in a triangle then rolled on top of him and started striking, the ref had to call the fight cuz the guy couldnt defend himself.

color me impressed

Mir should take it easily if he's smart and takes COngodown. He's so mpressed with his own striking though, he just might try to stand with him, and that could go badly for Mir. I hope BJ destroys Sanchez. That guy has always bugged me.

I agree about this being the stiffest test for Penn at lightweight thus far. However, the only areas Diego's demonstrably superior in are cardio and possibly in the clinch. I have a feeling BJ is going to box him into oblivion and chill out in the clinch. His takedown defense is too good for Diego.

Kongo will knock out Mir. His ground and pound's good enough to avoid getting subbed after his strikes put Mir on his back.

Co-sign. Florian broke ties with his longtime Muay Thai coach and bounces up to Canada to train with GSP and Firas every so often. He says it's worked out well, but we'll see. If he's not strong enough to win the scrambles or keep the distance, Guida will lay on him.

Quote

other match ups should be interesting Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve

I've been burned betting against Struve the last couple times out. Judging by that pattern (and the development of his skills), he'll win this one in some ridiculous manner.

Like the Maia-Herman triangle? Where Demain choked out Herman from the top while punching him in the face the entire time? That's my favorite sub of all time.

Mir's takedowns are terrible. I don't think he's mobile enough to keep shooting as he would have to in order to bring down Kongo.

@Amp,

yeah pretty much the same submission, the ref called it before any damage could really be done, once you cant defend yourself on the ground in the ammy's they call it...though they let some of they guys just stand there with there hands down and get beat to a pulp.

About Mir VS Kongo ... yeah im really worried Mir wont take him serious... and get hurt... but watching his training camp on UFC .com i was impressed...allegedly he has put on 20lbs of muscle...i will believe that when i see it at the weigh ins... but i do believe Mir is a true champ and will get better after every loss, If Kongo is facing a truly focused and improved Mir, i dont think Kongo has a chance... but i'm biased ... he could get knocked out in the first minute if he takes one of those punches velazquez ate...

I also hope Diego loses... not sure why i dont like him but i dont... I mean as a fighter he is great to watch, that fight he had with Diaz was fucking awesome
