WOW Mir actually did put on 25lbs (of muslce it looks) at least

he weighed in at 264.5 meaning he cut weight for once to make the heavyweight limit.... f*ing crazy... he really is dead set on facing brock again and being on more even playing fields

Frank Mir could be crazy scary now... hopefully he is used to carying himself around and doesnt gass out... also that size wont keep him from being KOed...

but i think that adds another advantage to him in the fight and i really hope he pulls of the win... Kongo weighed in at like 239... that gives Mir at least a 25lb weight advantage possibly more depending on how much he cut to make weight.

GO MIR!!!!!!!!!!!

My picks for the 107 card from the MMA board I frequent:

Main Card:
B.J. Penn, sub 3rd round
Kongo, KO 2nd round
Florian, decision
Fitch, sub 3rd round
Buentello, decision. Goddamnit - Struve needs a boxing coach so badly. It's a winnable fight if he can keep Buentello at range for two rounds, but it's not going to happen.

Preliminary Bouts:
Wiman, decision
Hendricks, KO 1st round.
Palhares, sub 2nd round.
Garcia decision
Grant, decision

Hot Fight:
Gouveia, KO 2nd round. Belcher's too slow to stay out of range, even if his leg kicks will bother Gouveia.

I'm not riding the Mir hype train. I'll be shocked if he does manage to beat Kongo from top control.

Im a Mir fan, always have been, he came off like an asshole this time around but thats ok, it happens, i just like BJJ fighters its my favorite part of MMA,
and I hate Tim Sylvia
Mir is a smart smart fighter but this is a dangerous fight, if he makes one mistake he loses by KO TKO...

i see the sanchez vs penn fight going the same way as the penn-florian fight... I dont think Penn is beatable right now at Lightweight.

ill play amph i agree with your pics but ill make some diff predictions just to be a little diff.

1. Penn by Sub round 5,
2. Mir by TKO 3rd round (this is just what i want to see, just to prove everyone wrong, if Mir wins it will probably be by Sub in the 2nd round)
3. Guida by Dec (another pick just cuz i like the fighter and want to see them win)
4. Struve by sub 2nd round
5. Fitch Dec

ill just stick the the main card...

I cant wait to see this PPV, its the best one for a while, Strikeforce has one next week where Cung Li fights i believe, kind of lame UFC cards for next month...

im training standup finally, im behind the power curve but its a good work out, so im doing BJJ and stand up... its alot of fun...sore as hell from this past week of training,

Im still more comfortable on the ground, throwing punches isnt coming naturally to me yet, so im eating some body kicks and jabs to the face... but the shit is fun... im liking the superman punch, im finally making it look more natural to throw... superman jab is fun to try too... my takedowns are horrible right now too...

Its so tiring but so fun, looking forward to getting better, maybe ill try an ammy fight sometime next year... you only live once, my brother has had 2 pro fights, he is 1-1...

Big ups to you for getting out there and doing it. It's pretty much all I can do to balance school, BJJ and some semblance of a family/social life right now. Muay Thai and wrestling will come later, I suppose.

Work your regular jab as much as you possibly can. A good one will do you better than almost anything out there in MMA. Penn has the best one in the business right now.

And don't worry about the picks. There is zero pressure on any of us for them and it'll be a fantastic card.

I like Struve's ground abilities, but I don't think he can keep Buentello from tagging him every now and then for the three rounds. Furthermore, I think Buentello's experienced enough to sit in his guard without getting subbed. In a year, Struve will be a handful for any mid-level heavyweight to deal with as he puts on weight and works the striking elements more. He's so dang young (a year younger than me I think) to be in the UFC.

Quote

Grant defeated Burns via TKO (strikes) at 4:57 of round 1.

Johnson defeated Garcia via submission (triangle choke) at 4:03 of round 1.

Palhares defeated Linhares via submission (heel hook) at 3:21 of round 2.

Hendricks defeated Funch via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-25).

Wiman defeated Nelson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Belcher defeated Gouveia via TKO (strikes) at 3:03 of round 1.

Main Card

Struve defeated Buentello via majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28).

Florian defeated Guida via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:19 of round 2.

Fitch defeated Pierce via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Mir defeated Kongo via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 1:12 of round 1.

Penn defeated Sanchez via TKO (cut) at 2:37 of round 5 to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship.

Great damn PPV, Mir did exactly what he needed to do, just put Kongo to sleep after a hard left dropped him.

Penn looked the best he ever did in his life, just beat up Sanchez for 4 and half rounds... gave Diego one of the meanest cuts ive seen in the UFC, probably almost as bad as the one given to Marvin Eastman

Who the hell else can face Penn? I for one dont know, maybe put Sanchez against Florian... give Frank Edgar a shot? idk.

Im not sure whats next for Mir, Lesnar is out for a long time and already has a fight lined up, maybe put him against Nog again? or the Velazquez? Junior Dos Santos?

Struve needs to sharpen up alot to be a contender he did good enough to win, but looked sloppy after the first round, gassed out.

Florian looked really sharp again, very impressive win over Guida, cut the poor man open, blood everywhere

Garcia was winning this, but got caught in a beautiful last ditch triangle attempt and tapped out in about 0.3 seconds. Moronic quick series of decisions by Garcia, but very nice capitalization by Johnson.

Gouveia frustrates the heck out of me. He just folded when Belcher started fighting back. If you look at Gouveia's KO of Fitch a while back, it's almost the exact same fight, except Gouveia pushes through the adversity to win. No idea why he folded this time.

Kongo has no idea how to escape a sub. Avoiding, yes, but not how to escape a very simple guillotine. Mir's strong, but Kongo went the wrong way and basically helped Mir choke him out. Ugh. Mir's an interesting situation. I can see him taking one more fight against someone like Duffee and then either fighting for a No. 1 contender spot or straight title shot if Lesnar gets healthy fast.

Penn looks unbeatable at 155. His body's in tune and his boxing is so, so good. Other than someone with a GSP-style sense of takedown timing, nobody's getting him down, especially not when up against the cage like Florian and Sanchez tried to do. He might just move up to 170 for the sport of it like Anderson Silva moved up to 205. He's still not beating GSP though.

I read somewhere that when Penn came back in 2005, after narrowly losing to Machida, he wanted to take on Arlovski, the then-UFC heavyweight champion. That's nuts. So is him licking the blood off his gloves.

Yeah Penn is amazing,

UFC has 3 champs now that just seem to be unbeatable,,, i mean no one even comes close in there weight devision (Anderson Silva, GSP, and Penn)

Machida and Brock still have alot to prove (though before the Rua fight i though Machida was gonna be another one, and he still might be but we know he has been shown kryptonite early on in his championship career, we will have to see how much he can improve.) If brock comes in, i feel his days are numbered,

Is he talented... yes, and he may prove me wrong, but I really doubt he could win against Carwin or a with a rubber match with Mir. I even would say that if he had to fight the crazy gauntlet alot of UFC champs had to he would have never made it to the title... but maybe im just a hater.

also it will be interesting to see what cards the UFC pulls next year... there are alot of injuries contract disputes ect... im looking forward to what they have planned for 2010 and whats in store for the champs.

Fantastic show.

I'm enough of a Penn fan to have his book, I really like his style of boxing + BJJ (+insane defensive stand-up wrestling), not that I'm the only one. Sanchez took it with dignity, well done. Kongo's sub-defense might have been affected by his having eaten a Fedor-like hook of course.

Interesting note on that hook that Mir threw, or at least I thought it was. From comments both Penn and Mir have made it seems they are taking cues from how Pacquiao boxes. I believe it was Penn stating he was trying to throw more flurries as Pacquiao does and Mir saying he was going to try incorporating the overhand that Pacquiao throws - this would be the punch that caught Kongo

I think it's really not so much them specifically taking things from Pacquiao, but rather Pacquiao showing how the techniques they're working on in camp are very effective. The trainers probably jumped all over him as an example to use for motivation and imitation.

I finally saw what I think Florian was trying to do with Penn - put him up against the cage and then slam him with a double leg lift. He did it against Guida once, but wasn't ever able to do it against Penn.

Rereading the quotes, it does sound like something that the trainers may have brought up, it is nice to see Pacquiao getting notice outside of boxing either way. Their respective comments are quoted here:

A. Why has no one discussed the UFC 108 PPV yet?

Because it mostly sucked. Thiago Silva had a back injury that near immobilized him. Hazlett, the jiu-jitsu wizard, decided to try and Thai box Daley, the really good boxer - with disastrous consequences. Junior dos Santos had the best moment of the night when he continued his quest for the heavyweight title by absolutely demolishing Gilbert Yvel inside 3 minutes.

Quote

B. Why has no one mentioned Fight night live that was aired last night?

I flat out love Tom Lawlor. If you read a few interviews with him or watch the videos, you find out that he's been a hardcore MMA fan since about 1998. He jokes around a ton, but you can see that he's hyper-aware of MMA history and is really living out a dream to be fighting in the UFC. I like his overall game (usually very smart), but think he goes for the guillotine a bit too much. The tired arms in the third round lost him the fight.

The main event kind of sucked. Maynard wanted to give the fans a show, but was so sloppy I couldn't stand it much.

Quote

C. Where did all the mma fans go?

Traveling and doing stuff man.

If you guys have the time, check out a few fights from the DREAM/Sengoku DYNAMITE!! 2009 event that was put on for the Japanese New Year's. The best MMA fights from that night were Tokoro - Kim and Gono - Sakurai. Masato - Souwer was a good K-1 rules bout too. However, some crazy stuff happened during the SEVEN HOURS the show was on air (I watched the whole thing too - stayed up from 3 am to 10:15 am).

Aoki snapped Hirota's arm with a hammerlock cranked ALL the way, got up, flipped him off and then ran around the ring giving the crowd the double bird. Overeem probably ended Fujita's fight career with a nasty knee to the head. Mousasi destroyed Goodridge inside a minute and a half. Kid Yamamoto (a hugely popular Japanese fighter) pretty much ended his primetime career with a loss to a deserving winner in Kanehara. Minowaman upset Soukoudjo in ridiculous fashion.

A. I actually really enjoyed UFC 108. We got to see 9 fights, all sweet finishes except for 2 fights. Stout/Lauzon was an awesome 3 rounder, but the main even was very dissapointing, and no it didn't help that Thiago was injured.

B. Fight Night was pretty good. The Simpson/Lawlor fight was crazy, man the A-train really has a fuckin chin. The main event was a pretty close fight, would have given the not to Diaz if he didn't get dropped twice in the third round. Oh, and Efrain should have tapped......

C. Around

D. What about WEC 46. Not as good as the WEC events usually are, but still quite good. Good to see Brown and Faber get a win. That triangle/armbar from a sweep attempt by Hominick was slick. And i'm very happy Bendo took the belt from that douchebag Varner......... The guy is the biggest fucking poorsport whiner I can think of (maybe besides Tito) "I came to fight, he came to grapple. Theres a big difference" Fuck off with that shit

And yeah Lawlor is hilarious. Going to the weigh-ins as the just bleed guy and now Harold Howard...... Good stuff "If you're coming on........ COME ON!!!".

Also that Aoki humerous fracturer was gnarly. Apparently the middle finger in Japan means "I told you so"....... Apparently

Clean forgot about the WEC. I still need to track down the fights, as I was on a plane at the time of the event. Always a great show from that organization.

I also forgot the most important thing that came from the DYNAMITE!! show. Jason "Mayhem" Miller was in the booth with Mezger and The Voice. He is already the best MMA announcer in the business with one show under his belt. Very funny, very astute and willing to say controversial, yet correct things. If they drop Mezger and keep The Voice to lead, that tandem is possibly the best announcing team in any sport. Yes, Mayhem is that good.
