I'm not a fan of the series myself, but as long as it helps the book sales I'm all for it. Butcher himself commented about the effect on the book sales recently at his board: "The unofficial (but oddly consistent) report from various booksellers I've talked to indicates that sales have doubled to tripled since the show began."
Sounds pretty good, to put it mildly.

Also, finished White Night today. Good, solid Dresden. It doesn't reach Dead Beat's level, but still thoroughly enjoyable book.

I know im just saying the same crap other people have said, but I really have enjoyed the books so far (on number 4). There great to read inbetween Malazan books. Just really good (easy) reading thats entertains, and short so finishing any one of the books is not a great commitment on your time. They will actually make you laugh out loud, and the action and they way the books are written really make them hard to put down.

As practically everyone here seem to love these books I just ordered the first three. My expectations are high, and I hope that I will not come to regret submitting myself to another long series.

@Reborn - i doubt you will regret it. And the series, while 'long' in numbers, reads fast. The books are relatively short compared to SE/RJ/GRRM 'bricks'.

Help me out here, i'm blanking... am halfway thru WN and this is bugging me... aside from flashbacks to the Justin Demorne days, did we see Elaine in Summer Knight or elsewhere before she shows up in this book? No WN end spoilers please, just a pointer to last appearance if any (ie: 'Yes, she was the Summer Court's envoy in Summer Knight' or 'No Abyss, you're hallucinating' or something.

Yeah, I think she was in the Summers court. This is NOT the first time Elaine's been in the novels, I know she's appeared before. I THINK it was Summer, but I can't remember for sure-- I suffer the same problem

Elaine was in Summer Knight. She faked her death after DuMorne's death, needed a place to hide and found that when Summer Court granted her an asylum. And to clear that debt she took the role as Summer's Emissary.

just got book 1 on Wednesday last week.

just finished reading book 8 yesterday.

Spent all of my lunch hour and an hour after work trawling the bookshops looking for a copy of white night.

I'm hooked on Butcher-Crack!

Re the TV series, i think one problem with it is similar to what happens with popular manga in Japan. A manga series is popular enough, an anime series is commisioned while the manga is ongoing. They then have to do a self contained story on telly while the series is ongoing in book form, and frequently horse it up a bit. Unfortunate really.

That said, i kinda like the TV show, at least what i've seen of it.

But really, it's good that you did. It IS a fairly significant point in WN, even if we're only ref'ing it in general terms.

Finished WN this am. Totally satisfied. Dead Beat and Death Masks still have my top 2 fave Dresden finales, but i put this easily on par with Summer Knight's big finish.

More than once i was sure i knew where something was going and he managed to surprise me.

Am now thinking that Cowl is DeMorne. He was breaking the Laws back in the day, so steps to prevent his own death, hey, why not?

Murphy rocks. More and more each book.

Marcone only slightly less so. The 'Platinum Member' thing had me lol'ing.

Almost as much as Carlos and Thomas' respective 'revelations'. Did not see either of those coming, really.

The Lash/Lasciel situation - one of the most interesting bits in this book was the point that people affect each other and change each other. While Harry makes this point to Lash, if you think about it, it also applies to his relationships with most of the other supporting cast: Molly grows up/Harry lets go of his anger, Murphy deals with the supernatural/Harry stays more human, Marcone actually out-Harry's Harry. Twice.

And now Thomas and Harry are gay.

Lara. New uber baddie. Wow. And the scene where Marcone is watching her and Thomas in the finale was just stunning.

Great fun. Still love the series. Was worried that Butcher might level off but he's keeping his game strong.

Personally I thought it wrapped just in time. If Lash had continued to aid Harry so directly, it might have become an easy escape route for him (and Butcher). Instead, Butcher saw the danger and concluded (for now at least) Lash's story very satisfactorily.
Sure, I wouldn't have minded if more info about Harry's background had been revealed, but I can wait. Butcher seems to know where the books are going. As a matter of fact, I read a message by him on his board where he said that he had these book-spanning story arcs in mind from the beginning, way before the books actually sold and stuff.

@Coco - re Alara thingy, yes, but nothing intrisically wrong with that. Books include promos for other books all the time, non?
