for me most of the obvious ones are, WJs death Coltaines death and the betrayal after that, but most recently in the last quarter of BH what really hit me was tavore and her army are no longer part of the malazan empire, after all they did in the empires name, and the realization that it looks like the malazan empire the empire we have all been reading about for the last 5 books is completely falling apart

After going through five pages, I am shocked to see no love for Karsa here. In my Tor edition of HoC, pg. 309-310, after the Unbound are summoned to the desert glade, and Karsa realizes that Bairoth and Delum have been summoned as well:

Quote

"From the stone statue of Bairoth emerged a distant, weary voice. 'Lead us, Warleader.'
Karsa flinched. Do I dream this? Then he straightened. 'I have drawn your spirits to this place. Did you travel in the wake of the Seven?'

....
Delum spoke, 'We have failed you, Karsa Orlong. Yet you invite us to walk with you once again.'
Karsa fought back an urge to scream, to unleash a warcry-as if such a challenge might force back the approaching darkness. He could make no sense of his own impulses, the torrential emotions threatening to engulf him. He stared at the carved likeness of his tall friend, the awareness in those unmarred features-Delum Thord before the Forkassal-the Forkrul Assail named Calm-had, on a mountain trail on a distant continent, so casually destroyed him.

Bairoth Gild spoke. 'We failed you. Do you now ask that we walk with you?'
'Delum Thord. Bairoth Gild.' Karsa's voice was hoarse. 'It is I who failed you. I would be your warleader once more, if you would so permit me.'
A long moment of silence, then Bairoth replied, 'At last, something to look forward to.'
Karsa almost fell to his knees, then. Grief, finally unleashed. At an end, his time of solitude. His penance was done. The journey to begin again."

It's a moment of incredible pathos - Karsa Orlong, a savage beyond our comprehension at the beginning of the book, has risen from boxed-in Teblor warrior to a man in his own right, with his own ideas and shocking sense of nobility. His confusion at his own emotions and redemption in the eyes of his two spectral companions was my favorite moment in the book.

Coltaine's death can understandably be cited as in the majority when it comes to people's emotional Malazan moments, but I will stand with the Toblakai I initially hated.

i also found that bit moving but there are quite a few people who dont like Karsa (not the way hes written just his personality) This stops everyone feeling for him.

I can see how that would come about, but I think it's unfortunate. My changing opinion of Karsa, from the opening of HoC, to his final appearance in it, is one of the reasons I so value SE's work. Besides, who didn't laugh a little inside when Leoman flinched after asking Karsa what a traditional send-off blessing would entail among the Teblor?

There are emotional moments with Karsa, but there are too many "I want to kill everyone" moments that overshadow the more meotional bits. :D

I think for me one of the most emotional moments is the bit towards the end of BH when Fiddler is playing his music.

This is my first post. I just got through reading The Bonehunters and decided that I could finally post here. I didn't want to be spoiled prior to finishing the books.

It's really difficult to choose, but if I could pick one off the top of my head, I would pick Itkovian's sacrifice, all the way up to Whiskeyjack's tragic death. I should have seen his death coming, with his constant voicing of his desire to retire from the military.

Other scenes I'd like to mention would be the scene in Midnight Tides in which Seren Pedac discovers Buruk the Pale's lifeless corpse in the house, as well as the scene in which Tehol Beddict was getting beaten to death by the Tiste Edur. That Bugg/Mael gave answer to the tragedy was justified in every sense.

I hate to admit it, but Felisin annoyed me all the way throughout Deadhouse Gates and I even wished that she would regret the way she treated Kulp, Heboric and especially Baudin. Her death in House of Chains was, however, very tragic. I broke up right then. I was very touched by the sacrifices that Mappo had made and the burden he carries for his friend Icarium, especially when much of his tragic past was revealed when they were in the Shattered Warren while pursuing the Path of Hands. The Chain of Dogs remains, however, the most tragic sequence in the entire book.

Gamet's fevered death and subsequent heroic ride into the battlefield against the Dog Slayers was one of the most powerful moments in House of Chains. Karsa's rampage through the Sha'ik camp was awe inspiring. I love that guy. "Witness!"

From the Bonehunters, I'd mention the scene with Chaur and Barathol on the boat, Truth's sacrifice, and the subsequent forging of the Bonehunters. Their survival was nothing short of inspirational.

I dont get it, why do people like Karsa so much :D? Its one of the characters I would like to die in a slow and painfull death, bloody arrogant f*ckface
I have stolen princesses from sleeping barrow kings
I have burned the town of Trebon
I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life
I was expelled from the University at a younger age most people are allowed in
I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day
I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make minstrels cry
You may have heard of me....

He's not arrogant. He has no denial of who or what he is. He's a man who's at terms with himself and he has a strong sense of justice.

He's almost the opposite of Icarium, who simply can't come to terms with who he is.

His problem is that like any barbarian, he tends to see the world in black and white - and in his view, chained and unchained. Likewise, I think that Samar Dev stands to earn much humility from her future experiences later in Letherii, a nation governed by what appear to be the notions of Objectivism, expansionism, progress and lassez-faire capitalism.

In many ways, Karsa's simplistic view of the world is at its very core a correct one, so it's difficult to find fault with what he has to say.

I think it as when Kruppe faced Caladan Brood and when Brood Lifted the hammer to awake Burn.

Oh and of course when Kallor killed Wiskeyjack man that was shocking

It wasn't so much WJ's death that got to me, it was when the healer (Bottle or Mallet, I can't remember) saw his shattered leg and it just destroyed him. With everyone trying to lie to him and say the leg went out after, Gods! That really hit hard.

QUOTE (Stalker @ Jan 23 2009, 01:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

Yeah, MoI for the just about the whole book- but being the Fiddler-fan that I am, I have to say Fid's song mixed into the big scene in Malaz.

It's really hard to pick just one...but I have, yet I can't say it since this is in the bonhunters forum.

So in it's stead is my second, which was also a hard thing to narrow down:
At the end of MT when Tehol was being brutally beaten to death. I was in shock and I couldn't beleive my eyes.
...but then he didn't die so everything was all cool.

A super close...uh third, would be the whole thing with Itkovian.
Or when Trull had to spear the Ceda...not sure why but I was really feeling that moment.
