Most of my favourite moments in this area are already mentioned, except this one:

Picker began to turn back to her companions - when the man began speaking. Very well, permit me, if you will, on this night. To break your hearts once more. This is the story of the Chain of Dogs. Of Coltaine of the Crow Clan, newly come Fist to the 7th Army...

Whiskeyjack's death was the most emotional moment for me...the way he stubbornly refused any proper healing and having Kallor betray and then kill him for protecting Silverfox...the lump in the throat was the size of a tennisball...(was growing very fond of his character and to see him die that way was upsetting)

Poor old Brys Beddict. Takes down Rhulad with real style, then finds out he's accidentally poisoned himself because his emperor didn't have faith in him. Such a waste. :p

Truth's sacrifice got me, because I really wasn't expecting it.

And of course, the deaths of Coltaine and Itkovian were hugely moving. I also loved the image of Korlat kneeling on the battlefield with Moon's Spawn hanging over her as if crying.

Post complete series-to-date re-read, i have a new one...

Trull's confrontation with Icarium... the poor guy has been fighting his own people for ages, he's been protecting a bunch of kids who are getting slaughtered anyways, he's wounded and tired and then Icarium shows up... his friend Onrack is apparently shattered and an army wiped out, Apt's dead, Ibra quartered, Iccy beats the crap outof Trull, QB shows up, buys him some time, and then QB is down and here comes Iccy again, and Trull steps up AGAIN and there's this great moment where even mid-shred-rage, Iccy recognizes him from their first clash, and Trull thinks 'That's right, it's me again'. He's absolutely sure he's going to die, but he is NOT letting Iccy get the kids without a fight. It's such a perfect 'hero' moment... fine, this guy has killed a demon matron, two immortal Imass warriors, a High Mage, kicked my butt and turned an army into cole slaw for good measure, fine, he's STILL not getting to these kids without me putting a spear thru him...

- Abyss, cannot read that chapter enough.

There's two different ways of doing this: First, what really got you the first time you read. For me, I guess that would be Wiskeyjack's death.

Then you have what really got to you on re-reads, and for me that is by far the conversation between Captain Lull and Duiker, ending in the statement "children are dieing". I liked it the first time, now I absolutely love it. So much that I sometimes flip the book open just to read it again. Think I'll do it now... Now, why do I never remember to mark that page somehow, so I can easily find it?

Truth's sacrifice for sure...
But I would like to point out one more that few ppl probably caught on to, and one that hit me more than the deaths...
When Fear and Trull seperated at Seren's door and Trull offered her his sword - and she denied it knowing full well what it signified and Trull's sense of resignation (not the word i was thinking of, but that disappeared soon as i was about to type it, this one is close enough) even though he didn't intend to offer it in the first place - also what got me in this sit was that fear and trull wandered the city together as brothers, after all their differences and arguments, and that some unknown force led them both to Seren, to her door without them ever knowing previously that's where she lived...
Also the Hero Trull bit - Shadow was always my favorite, and I can think of no other character Better chosen as Knight of Shadow. If it was MY book, Knight of Shadow is the greatest honor to bestow on a character - Trull is worth it.
I need to change my "fave chars" post.... I relate to Trull and Ganoes more than any other chars.

When Lorn died, and how it affected Ganoes... Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the book to reread, and it has been so long since i read it... damn my poorness...

I am the king of edits...
Brys' death was a big one - but not the death itself, but his realization in the last second... but more than that, the Guardian's retrieving Brys' body
"His memories must survive..." or something like that...
We've not seen the last of Brys Beddict ithink... i hope...

SE is a real tragic writer. I like how he isnt afraid to kill off characters without heisitation. I was disappointed when Kalam is thrown into the Deadhouse.

Gotm: None
Dg: Of course Coltaine Duiker and the rest of them. When Apsalar's father dies. Is that in this book? Anyone else stop and say what the **** after Baudin rips that old ladys head off and throws it into the crowd?
MoI: Ikovian, hes the only dead character I wish he could bring back. When Trotts dies with the smile on his face after killing/scaring away twenty soldiers.
Hoc:Fiddler, Gesler and Stormy.
MT:Brys. When the street gaurd guy stands up for Tehol against the Edur and gets killed. When Hull gets killed by the people that he betrayed his kingdom for because he thought he betrayed them and in betraying his kingdom he also betrayes them.
TBH:Chaur and Barathol. Even when L'oric takes the baby from him and he crys. i was weirded out when the marines went into Y'gatahn and they get killed. Its weird cause they are killed so cavalierly. I got used to drawn out deaths and that was the first time in SE's books you read about soldiers and i guess i wasnt prepared for the fact that they could die when they attacked. And on the moon, gardens died. When Mathok drops the book of apocalypse. When Obi-wan tells Anakin he was like a brother to him.

Ok so most of them arent cry worthy moments but they make you stop and think.

When Trull cries because Onrack could not.

Cotillon throughout BH, when he comforts Apsalar and his dispair and regret by the first throne.

The entire seige of Capustan in MoI - How everyone inside those walls gave everything to protect it, when the diseriant gives his life to heal Ikovian.

Also in BH when Leoman betrays the city and Corabb finds out what he was planning to do and stays behind to die like a soldier

I think Gesler (or Borduke?) from HoC gets pretty emotional for a soldier, "Just swear your damned vow before my heart flies out to fill my breeches."

Hmm, most emotional moment would have to be when Iskarul Pust replies to Mogara's question of what he would do if she was pregnant by saying "I'd kill the mule". Yeah, that would have to be the high water mark.
For high points, Corabb dragging Fiddler the rest of the way out of the tunnels under Y'ghatan after Gesler has come back in to get them is one that stands out quite prominently. Another moment I liked was when Stonny and Gruntle meet up after the invasion of Capustan has begun and he realizes that she's been molested. You can almost feel his rage and resolve at that point, and you know he's not going to stop until he's dead or has given answer to Stonny's assault.
All in all, I'd have to say that I've been more emotionally affected by this series than any other I've read, except perhaps the Hope series by David Feintuch. Of course, the hope series had all of the lows, but none of the highs.

Coltaine's death, or rater the way the last remmants of the 7th being slaughtered

Also, Stony's reaction after she gets raped in Kapustan
I have stolen princesses from sleeping barrow kings
I have burned the town of Trebon
I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life
I was expelled from the University at a younger age most people are allowed in
I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day
I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make minstrels cry
You may have heard of me....

Pretty much all of MOI, especially Itkovians death at the end.

Also, I thought the end of TBH was pretty emotional. On Malaz Island, when the outnumbered soldiers were bravely holding the landing bay waiting for Tavore to return and stopping the angry mob from reaching the Wickans. One of the heavies- cant remember who- killed the fleeing Malaz Island captain with an arrow in the back and when questioned his response was "but he wanted us to give them the Wickans" or somthing similar. Thought that was great.

And when everyone realised they were now Tavores. Pretty emotional - loyalty, honour, bravery - had the lot.

Pretty much the same as everyone else. The end of Memories of Ice. Seeing Whiskeyjack's death coming did not take anything away from the moment for me. Especially seeing Korlat's reaction. Just think of lying their helpless watching the life leave your loved one's eyes. Itkovian's death and that of the Bridgeburners like Trotts grinning till the end.

Coltaine of course. I think most people wanted to step into the book at that point and correct the wrong to the 7th.

Those were disheartening moments and then there are those that just make you just simply enjoy. Heh it was a small one but for some reason I enjoyed it thoroughly when Iccy and Karsa first crossed paths. Iccy just acting like it's another day in the park tossing boulders around not thinking much of it having a casual conversation with Mappo as he grabs his sword 'It's a shame you came so far just to die' or something to that extent. Just enjoyed that for some reason.

I submitted a "most wrenching moment" in this thread a while back... but during my reread last night on the train I decide that I'd found a moment that really got to me... and it's something I've never forgotten…

It's during the insane battle between the Chain of Dogs and the Kamist Reloe forces, when they're contesting a river crossing... and the tactic Coltaine uses is to transform the Wickan horsewarriors into heavy cavalry. In order to give the horses the energy they need to ascend a treacherous ramp Reloe has built in prep of the battle, Nil and Nether sacrifice the lifeforce of a single horse to give the cavalry horses the energy they need to make it to the top.

Lucky me - I have the book with me so I can do a quote for once...

DG, p.501
“For all that scholars tried, Duiker knew that there was no exception possible for the dark currents of human thought that roiled in the wake of bloodshed. He need only look upon his own reaction, when stumbling down to where Nil and Nether stood, their hands gummed with congealing sweat and blood on the flanks of a mare standing dead. Life forces were powerful, almost beyond comprehension, and the sacrifice of one animal to gift close to five thousand with appalling strength and force of will was, on the face of it worthy and noble.

If not for a dumb beast’s incomprehension at it’s own destruction beneath the loving hands of two heartbroken children.

The italics are SE’s, not mine. But I find this moment is one that I can’t get out of my head, even if I haven’t read DG in a while. And it’s not that I’m a huge animal activist (though i do love animals). It's just that I can see why this was necessary to win the battle and I approve of the decision, knowing that it wasn’t taken lightly, considering the respect the Wickans give to their horses.

But still, I can see the moment so clearly and it is truly a wrenching scene for me. Not as flashy as a main characters death, perhaps, but it’s the one that really gets me.

Of course Itkovian's death, but also the part when the Grey Swords, the T'llan Imass and all the other "people" of the Alliance gather aorund his grave and bring presents...
Still the most touching part was when that soldier, with whom Itkovian replaced his helmet with, came and cried while trying to replace the helmet again....
Beautiful yet heartbreaking...

Then, the death of Felisin... "Oh mother look at us now." 'nuff said
(although i didn't like Felisin at all)

This is the line that broke me in GotM
"With her armour removed, the Adjunct proved light in his hands..." (Paran POV)- and that is after Adjunct Lorn's death...

Trull's struggle through the MT also... Specially when he argued again with Fear after the battle of High Keep, and then sat on a hilltop and wept... Really emotional

And at last, in Hoc when Hedge saves Fid in that maelstorm at the end...:D
And I could still go on...
That shows us the sheer brilliance of SE's mind and imagination.
And one by one the gardens died

Yasnian: none in GotM? not when Derudan went to stay with Baruk and inscribed that circle? Not when Pearl knowingly went to his death to stall Anomander Rake so that QB could escape. Not when Calot sacrificed himself to save Tattersail? Or Tattersail's immolation on the plain?

So that's GotM for me.
DG: Sormo's death and the whole of the Vathar crossing. Coltaine...there's more but let's say they're the top 2.
MoI: Gruntle's army throwing themselves against the K'ell Hunters in front of Coral; QB taking on the Pannions; I'd say Itkovian but I'm still not happy with his meddling. The Imass could have avoided a lot of bloodshed if he hadn't intervened...he should have waited. But one HUGELY poignant moment for me was the 3 Bonecasters appearing in a line behind Brukhalian, moments from veering and saying to Gethol "We greet you Jaghut." The best line in the whole book for me!!
HoC: Onrack's growing fealty to Trull. Not much else that I can recall.
MT: Ceda's death! I should be reknown for this, my 'favourite' rant... literally put the book down and walked away. Then the demise of those other loyal defenders: Brys, those 3 brothers, Tehol, the poor old man who tried to save him...
TB: Nothing tops that show-down in the subterranean chamber: Monok swatting that revolting Edur warlock like a fly, then their successive defeat before Icarium..Monok, Onrack, Trull, QB, Apt (who must have held herself in readiness knowing she couldn't stop him...she prob. hoped her death would slow him enough for someone else to meaningfully intervene), Ibra, Trull again...then, finally the E'res. But the most jarring moment was Cotillion, waiting to pit himself against the unstoppable...and the image of him sitting with his head in his hands. It would have broken my heart...if he, a god, so despaired, what hope would there be for the rest?
"We greet you Jaghut."

My most memorable moment is Coltaine's last stand. That was some of the best writing I have ever read.

Fiddler's song was also done very well. I loved the end of that paragraph and section so much. Very well done.

Col sitting down and putting his head in his hands at the throne was a good brief insight to his character.

For me it would be when Fiddler is playing in TBH at the end with Gesler and Stormy and he starts his internal monologue

"And so we weep for the fallen. We weep for those yet to fall, and in was the screams are loud and harsh and in peace the wail is so drawnout we tell ourselves we hear nothing.
And so this music is a lament, and I am doomed to hear its bittersweet notes for a lifetime
Show me a god that does not demand mortal suffering.
Show me a god that celebrates diversity, a celebration that embraces non-beleivers and is not threatened by them.
Show me a god who understands the meaning of peace. In life, not in death.
