In response to the question, however... and assuimg by emotional you mean in a gut level feeling sort of way... as opposed to a hell yeah that was cool way...

GotM: the decription of the five dragons in formation, with Crone cawing in excitement, gets me every time, in this i-am-reading-something-amazing sort of way.

DG: Coltaine's death without a doubtm but Bult's 'children are dying' bit, and the part where the Gral horse refuses to leave Fiddler in the midst of a crazy shapeshifter battling sandstorm also get me.

MoI: Everything's going to crap, Brood hefts his hammer, and then MS breaks out of the waterfall. And the second hand telling of Gruntle rallying the Capans with the half eaten child's body.

HoC: Gamet's failed effort at leading the ambush.

MT: Brys's useless death.

TB: The descriptions of the army after YGhatan.

- Abyss, big suck.

that moment really got me too, philospher77. I loved that SE allows Cotty to have a moment of despair and sadness at the choices he's been forced to make - and that he shows that just because you've ascended, it doesn't mean you've completely disconnected from the human condition. I know it's more or less for certain characters, but I thought this moment was a hugely important one for the understanding of Cotty and ST and helped to bring them down out of the 'godly' world and remind us that they were people who had strong connections - as the malaz army seems to foster.

I thought this was a great moment - and it was so well written by SE, not something you saw coming, but when it happened, it just seemed to fit.

-j.

Exactly the same for me. Unlikely Cotty, ST doesn't seem to still have many positive human emotions in my opinion tho'

I think ST was sad when he found Hawl dead in HoC. Also when Rake killed Doan & Ganrod. He does retain human emotions, they are just displayed rarely.

He's no crybaby like Cotillion. He's the Emperor.

Ironic that Cotillion the cold, efficient, best killer ever, shows emotion.

Kellanved also showed some regret for the forthcoming attack on 'his poor' Wickans.

Tho with the dead Hounds he seemed more pissed than upset.

- Abyss, giggled when they shot Old Yeller

Poor Cotillion. I wanted so much to give him a hug... and maybe a kiss... and... and... nevermind :).

Apart from other obvious moments that was mentioned before:
- When L'oric was crying over his dead familiar (the first one). Wasn't it the first person ever to be shown crying in the whole series?
- When Icarium woke up and had Taralack Veed by his side, instead of Mappo... and this scum was calling him "my friend"... :)

well, my second most favourite has to be coltaine's death ... but there are really so many scenes that i love in se's writing ... true, he is a friend, but as far as i'm concerned, he is the greatest writer of our generation ...

Hmmm well depends on how old you guys are, i am only 27 so might not be in my generation, but my favourite scene at the moment they change with my mood, is when Gesler and Fiddler meet and basically they talk about swapping tales, and Gesler says mine has your beat by far, and fiddler just sort of laughs, tis a good scene.

As for how good Erikson is well pretty amazing i would say, he is my favourite Writer in the genre at the moment, and the series is my up there, i can't put it top until its finished.

Although the ends of DG, MoI, and HoC are all amazing, I thought I would add a few other scenes that have yet to be mentioned that I found pretty moving:

GotM: Morn's senseless death

DG: The battle amidst the butterfly migration when Sormo falls and his soul is taken

MoI: Gruntle meeting Stonny after she'd been raped and starting his transformation; Toc running into the Tenescowri

HoC: When Felisin learns that Paran still lives; later when she enters Treach's temple and remembers Felisin Fatter but Heboric pushes her out; L'oric getting carried back to his old bed; the POV of the goddess as she rages against Onrack

MT: When Bugg takes revenge for Tehol

tBH: Y'Ghatan before the tunnels, esp. Truth; "And one by one, gardens died"; Fiddler's song

Fiddlers song was very good. But i think you mean Lorns death not Morns death which was an ancient KCCM city

I have a few memorable moments:

First, I cannot believe no one has mentioned the death of Whiskeyjack!!! I cried alot and I never cry. I would like to see someone open up a can off whupass on Kallor in a major way.

Also, coltaine's death. I was enraged at that. I kept seeing Pormqual as George W and the creepy Jhistal priest as Cheney. Later Korbolo Dom as Rumsfeld. I usually can't bring myself to wish death on anyone, but I did want to crack them over the head (ok, and maybe cut their tongues out).

And, the hug between Fiddler, Kalam and Quick Ben at the end of HoC (I think?) was pretty emotional. The whole "wow, it's been a sh*tty couple of books, but my crew is here now and everything is going to be OK" got me...

IN MoI when the T'lan Imass are giving Itkovian their memories

" ...I loved her so much.", gets me every time.

The anguish of endlessly going on and not living, but remembering that you used to. It breaks my heart.

I think it's interesting that the death of felisin at the hands of her sister isn't mentioned in this thread (unless I missed it). It seems like SE wrote it to be an emotional moment, but I remain untouched by it.

Isn't it so just because not many people actually like Tavore or Felisin...

But the death of Felisin wasn't emotional at all, although it was probably supposed to be. It happened to quickly. SE took apparently some effort to create Felisin, then he made her die in very disappointing manner.

Oh, and I liked Felisin.

After some thought, I have to say that SE may have been trying to show how unimportant some of the things are that we consider to be very important. Felisin is a very damaged character, and really seems to have been doing most of what she did to get back at her sister for what she saw as betrayal of the family. And, in the end, her death was as pointless as most of her life had been. So, what I get out of the entire Felisin story is mostly sorrow for wasted opportunities, but not for the girl herself. She died spiritually and mentally long before her body did.

The death of Felisin was an in-your-face! moment by the author, I don't think it was meant to tug the emotional heartstrings so much as play with expectations and surprise the reader.

The most emotionally gripping deaths are the sudden ones which you would expect to happen to a chorus member as a side-death. Just shows how easily this character you learned to love can just be wiped off. I always find it a bit too unrealistic when the characters we love get the large glamorized deaths.

Oh, and one of the most emotional scenes for me was when Tehol was getting beaten to a bloody pulp. I thought he was dead, so it got to me. Too bad he lived; it could have been one of SE's best character deaths.

Also, any dialogue between Trull and Fear was riveting.

And Tool's final words to Toc, when Toc has no idea who's talking to him.
