I agree with the crazy theory of WhiskeyJack being Iskar Jarak,

That's not a crazy theory. It's not even a theory. Whiskeyjack=Iskar Jarak is a fact.

The fuck it is Dolorous, don't start lying to the kids :hand:

There's a guy who owns a burning bridge, he's a king and his name sounds like a crazy indian.

It's not a fact, its a plausibility.

Come on, he's a grey-featured Malazan military commander who speaks of burning bridges during the invasion of Seven Cities. And his name is a barely disguised version of Whiskeyjack. It would be hard to make it more obvious.

edit: Unless you are just trying to wind me up.

No no, you do that fine on your own ;)

It really isn't that logical. I don't automatically connect Whiskey Jack with Iskar Jarack.

It could be Greymane. Or perhaps its Nefarious Bredd, that guy gets around.

A, so far as we can tell, mythical/made up soldier in the Bonehunters. If you re-read the 14th army parts of BH, his name comes up a couple of times. Always in some incredible or unlikely circumstance.

It's not obvious but someone picked up on it on a reread.

It's Whiskeyjack. Just admit it already. Greymane and Nefarious Bredd did not command a Bridgeburner unit in the Malazan invasion of Seven Cities, and that's just the most obvious objection.

DM, unless Apt sees a direct quote, he stubbornly refuses to believe things (case in point-Paran=Ascendant thread)

back to crazy theories topic--something I picked up today while arguing with Apt--the FA hated the Errant and tried to wipe him out, for his position of "neutrality" as MotT. So I present for your consideration the following:
Paran is MotD and is playing the role, formerly played by the Errant, so the FAs come back to do to him what they did to the Errant. Thus, Errant and Paran must work together to preserve the roles of Masters...
now I know that in RG
Spoiler

But hey, it's a crazy theory.....

Alright, well how about a serious mispronunciation of Whiskeyjack by a native people? same number of syllables and all the hard consonants seem to be in the right place. Just my pet theory anyways, uhm, how do we know that Whiskeyjack is whiskeyjacks real name anyways? I always assumed it was a nickname of some sort.

Nefarious Bredd is a fabled soldier who only women have seen, i should add. And they all lust after him. He seems to be more of a fantasy gone wild.

People assume it's his real name because it connects with his sisters name Dunsparrow. His parents are probably called pigeon and duck.

I also prefer to think he's named after the bird because if he was named after a type of alcohol with the name jack attached to it, I'd be very disappointed. Very american cartoon name for a central character then.

He's named after the bird. The Moranth name for Whiskeyjack is "Bird-that-steals". At some point in BH or RG a bird is also discussed, I think it tied in to Whiskeyjack or Iskar Jarak somehow (page reference anyone?).

I remember ales in these books, but have there been whiskeys? Or even whiskies?

Interesting, is the history of the Moranth name mentioned? I guess that could be evidence for Whiskeyjack not being his real name.

I'd call it far fetched though.

The bird was discussed in BH methinks.

The Moranth are interesting though aren't they - cousins of the Barghast, turned the tide of so many battles/ wars for the Empire... know obscure things about people like WhiskeyJack... once engaged the Edur in a technology transfer... and their ammo is the one big advantage the 14th (or any Malazan army) has.

I'm sure this was discussed to death in the MOI forum, and I hope they come back before the end to play a significant role.

Twist totally rocked in MOI.

GotM, on UK mmpb p.256, said:

The creature's face remained in shadow beneath the the hinged helmet. The words that came from it seemed born from a cavern, hollow and faintly echoing. 'Selectively, Bird That Steals. You are well known to us, Bridgeburner. You tread the enemy's shadow. From the Moranth, assistance will never be scarce.'

Surprised, Whiskeyjack looked away, the skin tightening around his eyes.

The Moranth continued. 'You asked of the fate of one of our kind. A warrior with but one arm, who fought at your side in the streets of Nathilog many years ago. He lives still.'

The sergeant took a deep breath of the sweet forest air. 'Thank you,' he said.

'We wish that the blood you next find on your hands is your enemy's, Bird That Steals.'

He frowned, then gave a brusque nod and turned his attention back to Kalam...

That Black Moranth calls Whiskeyjack "Bird That Steals" twice more in that conversation. I'm not sure if the term was ever used in MoI, by Twist or another Moranth. Strange how Whiskeyjack and Kalam don't react to the address, they must have heard it before.
