I've read from several sources that it's not unusual for bad cases to have a long, slow build up that seems alright, then get real bad within days. I honestly hope that's not the case for Johnson, as much as I dislike the man himself.

Not saying he shouldn't get priority. But since he felt no compunctions about joking about people needing ventilators ('operation last gasp') when he knew people were dying (among other reasons) it seems fitting to joke about him in turn (or in this case point out the irony of the situation---though then again perhaps jumping the queue really is a traditional British value, if you consider the class system...). I doubt his pregnant fiancée is going to read this and faint to death.

It's not like he's the Queen. Heaven forfend....

There is no queue yet at present for ventilators in the UK, so nothing there to jump.

I work for the organisation that runs that hospital and he wont have been pushed through. St Thomas' is one of the national centres for infectious diseases so are well prepared, so they're not having to make those kinds of priority calls. The site has upped its ICU capacity massively and aiming to have 400 ICU beds across the Trust ready in time for the peak.

Of course in all seriousness I'm glad there isn't a shortage of ventilators (so far...). But if there had been one (particularly as a consequence of his prior 'let almost everyone who isn't high risk get it' policy---presumably that would have included him?) Johnson wouldn't have had to worry.

I don't like the guy but I hope he gets out soon. If you're bad enough to be on a vent then the risk of deteriorating gets so much higher.

Our numbers are not quite going as predicted. We haven't actually got an increase of ventilated patients, but the death rate has been quite high; so rather than more coming in and the ICU overspilling into theatres we've prepared, they've been dying and are replaced. We're only a relatively small hospital, but we've now had 24 deaths. It might be because we have a high population of old folk - so once they've got it and are ventilated they're less likely to recover.

Work has now told us we all have to go onto the same shifts as ICU staff - 7am to 7.30pm. This is going to be rough. I'm only just getting used to being in one bay with one patient for the whole shift, and whereas I just had a fairly positive day (I had a tubed patient on dialysis) I have yet to work in the 'yellow' zone - basically the same but in full PPE.

Its horribly claustrophobic. I really dont like not being able to get away from people, small areas to work in, and the inability to just leave to get a drink or move about or whatever. These shifts have us working for hours without any break unless you doff all PPE, which then adds a degree of guilt that you're wasting supplies.

Also even if school and our childcare is still running at the moment, no one is going to take the kids at that time of the morning and I'd feel awful doing that to them anyway. Work is just going to have to be flexible on this - if they want me in they'll have to be.

Let's just point out this isn't a presidential system so this isn't as big a deal as if it was Trump, for instance. But I suppose the social distancing measures mean the parliamentary party can't really operate so it needs a tight circle at the top. Enter Raab...what a tit.

I had read that some Tory MPs were proposing a national unity government even before this happened. The undercurrent being they didn't want their party getting all the blame for any bad decisions.

Whatever gets us through I guess.

some good news for ontario. The amount of new cases over the last 3 days has gone down and the testing backlog is also down substantially.

Maybe these measures are starting to bear fruit?

The virus has to spend more evolution points to adapt to the cold. Canada is always a tough nut to crack.
