So far. Deaths have been jumping a bit over the last couple of days. Mostly passengers off the cruise ships though I think.

So apparently in my mom's hospital, there's no special precautions in handling confirmed cases-it's a run of the mill "respiratory droplets" precautions case- wear a surgical mask and you're good to go.

This does not help to dispel her convictions that this is all an elaborate conspiracy to benefit some unknown nefarious parties

I actually think studies show that n95 masks are only marginally superior to surgical masks to the point that the whole thing is silly. I’m not sure, I keep seeing studies that say they but if true I can’t believe hospitals would waste the expenditure

Also the music thing sounds ridiculous to me, I personally don’t visualize viruses in musical notes. An electron microscope or a crystal structure would be preferable

My best friends wife is a frontline respiratory therapist. Properly fitted N95 masks are much superior.

In my area, there are no tests for COVID-19 unless you're hospitalized. The biggest county next to me can maybe do 1000 tests per week in a couple weeks time.

The numbers being reported in the US are bogus, but not truly because Trump out whoever is fudging the numbers. It's because we just don't have enough testing capacity to tell who has it and who doesn't. Given that only 10-20% of people who get it need hospitalizations, we're looking at way, way more than what the official data says.

It’s long as the numbers are not being hidden on purpose and the message to take it seriously continues the excact numbers probably are not important. We are way beyond the point of contact tracing. Treat yourself as a potential carrier and everyone else the same. The epidemiologists and statisticians can probably do a go job with the data they have.

Past that everyone who gets it and recovers without needing hospitalization is a win. That said we do need testing, specifically an anti body test in mass production as soon as possible. Once we know who is safe to to go out we can start leveraging them.

The Spanish flu killed fifty million but basically infected probably 500. It ended when it ran out of hosts.

Back in the days of the SARS scare, my mom had to wear full protective gear all the time.

The fact that they aren't doing any extra precautions now makes her (and the rest of the staff) feel like everything about the lockdown is just induced hysteria.

I'm not agreeing with her, but I'm not arguing with her to say that she's wrong, either.

The most disturbing thing about the Boris in hospital stuff is the Princess Diana level worship cult that has sprung up around the man. Thankfully my street was entirely silent last night, but then I live in the North.

Rumblings from a teacher friend that schools are posited to go back after easter, with full classrooms that somehow maintain 2 metre distancing. Not quite sure how that will work, but hey, she is jumping up and down and using the U word. And the supermarkets appear to be going back to the usual chaos, the one next door no longer has queues at the door and is open 7am til 10pm again. So much for lockdown, eh?

I can't see it working. An average classroom here just doesn't have even close to the space, which then begs the question: where do they plan on holding all these lessons? Outside in the fields?

We've drilled the social distancing thing into our preschool daughter when we go out (in the elevator of our building ect.), but I guarantee that if you put her in her class again with all her friends and classmates that would go right out the window. They simply don't have the mental acuity yet at that age to know how to keep their distance in that situation.

I'll happily do it for you if it helps: she is wrong. This is worse than SARS. Much worse. Not so much in deadliness when you do contract it, but it is massively more infectious. I'd strongly urge them to get themselves sorted out or you will have hospital staff dropping like flies.

On a separate note, they have started turning general wards into IC units in our hospital. So I am now getting agitated clinical staff coming to me, asking if they can start using university offices. Obviously we are happy to oblige, but it is going to pose a problem if the lockdown gets lifted before these wards are reinstated, because our students will be out of desks.

Also, the amount of elderly men and homeless people i see roaming the streets on my commute is frustrating and disheartening.
