Vaccine program begins Tuesday (tomorrow/today) in the UK. You guys over there going to be particularly attentive to how things go? Or are you all like "nah mate, I'll get mine when it comes around, no worries, Bob's your uncle" ?

I'll be keeping half an eye I guess. My parents are in one of the earlyish brackets to be vaccinated so that's picqued my interest a bit. As much as I'm trying not to get carried away it is nice to feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Like TRB I'm more interested in when older family members and those with known risks will get vaccinated. Otherwise bobs your uncle

I will need to pay attention as my wife is a frontline social care worker, so in theory she's in the second tier of vaccination candidates. I don't know if that makes me eligible by virtue of cohabitation so we'll see what happens there.

90-year old lady from the UK first woman in the world (outside the clinical trials) to get the vaccine.

She looks so emotional.

This made me glossy-eyed and emotional myself....holy shit it's been a long damn year. You never realize it till Gandalf and the Rohirrim appear on the ridge above Helm's Deep. There's hope...on that horizon there.

I fully accept that this could have be in my head, but there is no one in Ethiopia who is lactose intolerant.

70 percent of Ethiopians were lactose intolerant in a recent study.

https://www.research...mong_Ethiopians

Lactose intolerance in adults is pretty much the norm in most places, that mutation is relatively recent.

Trump was asked a question about that at today's "Vaccine Summit" and why his actions exhibit the opposite of what doctors are recommending people do until the vaccine can be widely distributed. He gave some flippant reply about the WH Xmas party being a smaller affair than usual and that people were social distanced and wearing masks like the media sitting in the audience at the summit. Which if you've seen footage of the Xmas party, you know is utter bullshit.

Ffs, just when I thought Trump couldn't go any lower. This takes the cake. A Christmas party three weeks before Christmas. Are there no depts he will not sink to?

'British regulators have urged people with a history of “significant” allergic reactions not to take the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine after two people who took the shot Tuesday had bad reactions. [...] two care-providers who took the vaccine [...] both are now recovering well. [...] both had significant history of reactions, with both carrying adrenaline auto injectors. [...] national medical director for the NHS in England, said: “As is common with new vaccines, the MHRA have advised on a precautionary basis that people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination after two people with a history of significant allergic reactions responded adversely yesterday.”'

Wonder how 'bad' they mean. And how 'significant'... 'carry around an epi pen all the time'?

If they already carried around epinephrine shots for possible allergy related stuff prior to the vaccine, I would expect the same kind of thing the shots would be required for in daily life, probably on the back of an ingredient in the vaccine triggering their reaction. Pretty typical for the severely allergic to have adverse affects from vaccines. The good news would be even if you have the adverse reactions, as long as you have your epinephrine with you, you'd be okay and the vaccine would be out of your system in what? 2 months including the booster?

Get in, a co-authorship

https://www.thelance...2661-1/fulltext

Sure, I am only one of about 600 workers listed as co-author (supplementary file under the 'Oxford COVID vaccine trial group' entry), but I'll take it. A Lancet paper, never thought I'd see the day. Time for a change of career.

[Edit]Not sure why the pasted link only triggers half the web address....

Other half carries an epipen (nut allergy), he sent me the link yesterday. As we're both in our 30s we're assuming they'll have figured out the problem by the time we're eligible to receive it.
