There's an alarmingly large chance that Le Pen will become president of France:

'French far-right leader Marine Le Pen proposed a ban on Muslim headscarves in all public places, seeking to build on a record recent poll putting her almost neck-and-neck with President Emmanuel Macron

[...] The hijab policy, which would be contested in court and almost certainly be ruled unconstitutional, saw the 53-year-old return to a familiar campaign theme 15 months from the country's 2022 presidential election.

[...] recent polling shows her closer than ever to her ultimate prize and has led to a rash of new speculation about whether the anti-EU, anti-immigration populist could finally enter the Elysee Palace.

[...] If re-elected after a campaign that is expected to be centred on jobs, the pandemic, and the place of Islam in France, 43-year-old Macron would be the first president since Jacques Chirac in 2002 to win a second term.

Under the presidential system, the top two candidates in a first round of voting progress to a second-round runoff where the winner must get more than 50 percent.

A rerun of the Macron-Le Pen contest of 2017, which all polls currently show as the most likely outcome, could increase the abstention rate and disillusionment with the French political system.

Turnout in the second round in 2017 was 74.6 percent, its lowest level since 1969, because many voters from the left declined to cast a ballot.'

At least it wasn't her and Trump at the same time....

So, the Mexican elections. Anyone else appalled at the death tolls? According to this article it's only been 34 as of june 4th but it still seems extreme. Probably doesn't help that Western media sensationalizes it.

How fucked up would Mexico have to get before the US would step in and kick that hornets nest? I realize that Mexico is a big country and we only hear the grizzly stories but I can't help but think of Mexico as one big pirate island.

35 candidates it says.

Like that's actual people running for a position? That's fucking insane.

What is it with Tories and their inability to keep it in their pants?

It's like some sort of bizarre tradition.

Not sure if you saw but apparently the bill that was protested against in Bristol (the one that removes our right to protest, in effect) passed with about a 100 vote majority.

I remember when I was copping flak here before for saying how shitty they are and how things would get under them. Anyone got an album from The Hives I can borrow?

So I’m curious to hear other thoughts, I’m not really sure where I stand yet. Typically the olympics are supposed to be apolitical and political protests etc were punished. However this year I am noticing a ton of protests on the podium and elsewhere.

Was the rule always stupid? Or is the idea of an event where countries gather to play sport and maybe mix a little a good thing?

I mean all expression is political so an outright ban is basically impossible and some crimes are too heinous to ignore but maybe having one place were the atmosphere is just one of friendly competition in sport wasn’t a bad thing either

So, what are the history books going to write about Angela Merkel? And what is next for Germany?

A bit of a jerk to the left, by the looks of it. Centre left by European standards, fanatically communist by US standards. And a probable 3-party coalition government.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Is that the entire population of Denmark? Why don't they just have a show of hands?

That would be the buffet. I wouldn't be surprised if half of the municipal workers get COVID after this.

There's like 20 parties that run every election. most don't get enough votes to get a mandate but there's a lot idealists, crazy people and people having fun.

Last time a party called "Mexican Party" won a certain amount of votes and used all their alotted funds to hold a Mexican Party.

Each party can list X amount of candidates. Some big parties have over 20 candidates.

It makes for some long lists and also means that it takes for ever to count every part and candidate.

Aww, no more Merkel (dang, 16 years). I guess there won't be any change in course, yeah? (don't know anything about Olaf Scholz). It's going to be weird when they have one of those summits where all the leaders assemble and not seeing Merkel there.
