Game of Thrones Season 8

60 minutes did a GoT segment before the this final season's premier. In it GRRM stated that the show is no longer based on his books and gladly has given over his 'child' for adoption by Benioff and Weiss. So makes sense there is a thread under the TV section of the forum. I like that this thread exists though, because there isn't so much clutter about battle tactic minutia and other obsessing about one thing or another. It's easier to discuss the overall themes as a whole instead of clicking through page after page of what should have or shouldn't have been done during this or that battle.

The writing is so, so bad. I was hoping the B&W episodes would be better, but idk why. They haven't shown any signs of being good writers, ever.

Your very likely right at this point. Shame. Each season is clearly marked. I should have linked it when I replied to Nico but I was in a hurry and trying not to see spoilers as I didn't have my renewal keyed in. Ed: upon reflection it's better that shit isn't in here.
I skimmed the redundant thread.

So what are the major plotlines missing from the TV show?
Lady Stoneheart: At first I thought this was no big deal. They were just streamlining things. However Beric in the show was now instrumental apparently, a literal agent of the Red God. So this deviation is perhaps quite massive. Also Briene is either dead or will have to swear an oath to kill Jaime. That's a big difference.
Aegon / The Mummer's Dragon: A third Targyreon, its baby Aegon or is it. He has brought the golden company and Dorne has declared for him. His hand has brought the plague of greyscale to westeros! Again I thought leaving out this plot was just streamlining things. However its a lot of chaos that the books have left out. The golden company also doubled in size and now work for cersei instead.
The prince that was promised: Did the show abandon this idea? Did it subvert it? Was the prophecy always a red herring?
The Maester conspiracy: I love this one. The measters value science and they serve in every keep worth the name in westeros. Sworn to serve the keeps, not the rulers. Are they as neutral as they seem? Did they poison the dragons to weaken magic in the world?
Danny had her period again?: When the seas dry up, when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the mountains crumble you will have another child or some such thing. Seemingly fulfilled.
Minor Plot points
The faceless Conspiracy: What are the faceless men up to at the citadel? Did they cause the doom of valyria? They didn't seem to care avout Aegon the conqueror but will they let Danny live or her dragons? They worship death so where do they fall in the fight against the others.
Iron Bank: The Iron bank doesn't believe cersei will ever pay them back so they backed Stannis. They also despise slavery as all true bravosi apparently do.
Ramsay Bolton Marries 'Arya': I chalked this up to streamlining
Dire Wolves: Are they important. I think Aryas connection with Nymeria will be what saves her from becoming 'no one'. Ghost may protect johns soul so when he is resurrected he doesn't become less than he is. All starks seem to be wargs. If jon is a warg and can ride dragons will this matter? Id say probably.
What am I missing?

the show totally dropped that part of the prophecy, and I always assumed that they just didn't want to give away too much, but now I'm super worried that they'll just ignore it altogether

I think this will still happen. Arya/Hound may get a shot but will fail I reckon. Cersei will kill Tyrion or Jaime and the other will reciprocate. I was really thinking she'd let all the arrows loose at Tyrion when she was on the wall. Why not? She was 100% killing Mel anyway.

Yeah, I was so sure he was going to die through that whole scene, and I couldn't figure out why she didn't do it. She had every advantage. I just have very little faith in B&W anymore to get this right.

3ER is Bloodraven, and he may or may not be the actual Big Bad depending on if he's a trickster or not. The Isle of Faces and all its weirwoods and the Green Men have a big role left to play.
Rickon & Osha may actually be in Skagos in the books.
Howland Reed is still a big ? in the books, but I suppose he's gonna factor into R+L=J.

After all the kill lists, I figured I'd make a list of people who made it to the last episode:
- Jon
- Dany
- Sansa
- Arya
- Bran
- Tyrion
Aside from Ned and Catelyn, the above were the only POV characters in A Game of Thrones, excepting prologue dude. (Prologue/Epilogue characters always die in the chapter where they are introduced.) All of them all made it this far. Probably at least a couple of them will die next week.
- Davos
Davos and Theon were the only POV characters added in A Clash of Kings. Theon almost made it to the very end.
- Sam
The new POV characters in A Storm of Swords were Jaime and Sam. Jaime almost made it to the very end.
- Brienne
- Asha/Yara
In A Feast for Crows we got Brienne, Asha, Cersei (who almost made it), and several from the Ironborn/Dorne plotlines, some of whom (like Arianne and Victarion) weren't even characters in the show. That's it for the POV characters who made it to the end. The only other POV characters who are also show characters are Melisandre (close), Selmy (not so close), Kevan Lannister (also not so close), Aeron Greyjoy (barely a character in the show), and Areo Hotah.
Non-POV characters who made it to the end:
- Gilly
- Gendry
- Grey Worm
- Tormund (though he likely won't be seen in the last episode)
???
I'm tired so I'm probably forgetting someone worth mentioning.
- Jon
- Dany
- Sansa
- Arya
- Bran
- Tyrion

Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish
Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

Dany & Sansa are for sure goners though. Both have sentenced people to die without doing the deed themselves.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I'm calling it now.
Half way through this episode I said this to my wife this must all be a dream. There is no way it went down like that. That seemed like utter trash. Too many things didn't seem right especially with character development. I think that is Bran looking into a future and seeing what would happen. He'll tell Jon and a different future will happen where King's Landing is not burned down.
