I'm a die-hard THE FIFTH ELEMENT fan, so I can't bin him entirely, but nothing else he's done is all that great. THE MESSENGER aspires to greatness but never quite gets there.

I think Leon is a genuinely brilliant film but the backstory that Besson was almost certainly fucking a fourteen/fifteen year old while making it, and reportedly wanted to make the relationship between Leon and Mathilda more sexual, just makes it hard to want to recommend it to anyone anymore.

WAIT WHAT??????????????????????????

I mean i thought Leon was a fine film though some people are put off by Leon and Mathilda's relationship, but that last part holy hell.... thats... not kosher.

EDIT: Just dig some digging, he impregnated a teenager????? In his 30s!!!!!!!

My advice in these circumstances is to separate the art from the artist.

For example Roman Polanski is an undoubtedly great filmmaker, I enjoy his movies, but as a human being he deserves to be castrated with no anesthesia.

I can't separate the art from the artist often. There's just so much great stuff out there made by people who don't do awful things that I don't miss the things that are made by bad people.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Art from the artist is fine so far as it goes but there's a point at which you're either giving money or causing money to be given to a proper bad one and therefore supporting their life.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Back on topic.
There's one filmmaker I forgot to mention, Darren Aronofsky.

I’d rather jam a fork in my eye than sit through a DUNE flick made by Aronofsky. It would be like Jodorowskys Dune writ-large.

Out of curiosity, is there a thread that dedicated to discussing the Dune books by Frank Herbert? If so please post the link if you so kindly would.

I assume it would be somewhere in the Other Literature section.

Gah I heard the decision to release this on MAX has been taken back and will be on the big screen only. I was looking forward to being on my new ass placer for this but this probably does need to be seen on the big screen though I guess.

Ed: it will still air early on it but after 45 days of release.

I support the drive for this to be on the big screen...it's a big screen type movie, and Villenueve's films look best there...

BUT....

will the world be in a state to go back to the theatres in enough droves to make it a worthwhile BO pull? I worry that this could doom the chances the series continues due to a lacklustre BO because of COVID.

If it has bad BO, it should wear old Spice.

The character posters that just dropped are pretty rad.

All those character posters look like perfume ads.

"Water of Life. The new fragrance by Denis Villeneuve."

I'm not liking the cyberpunk villain look for Baron Harkonnen. In the book the Baron is described as having red hair and wearing flamboyant brightly coloured robes.

Pretty movie actors going to do pretty movie actor things.

The whole tone is a lot more "gritty". I think the Duke's poster is very menacing.

Nothing about the the movie strikes me as foreboding. Everything I have seen so far reminds me of a perfume commercial.

True, Chalamet looks the very opposite of "gritty".

"Baby-smooth" and "super-moisturised" come to mind. Not exactly what you'd expect in someone on a desert planet.

But hey, I guess we'll see what sort of job he does.

I think the score will have quite a big impact.

I have a great deal of faith in this film. I hope its not misplaced.

It's Zimmer too, his track record with big epics is pretty damned good.

I'm not feeling the Dune logo. It looks like a practice exercise at the beginning of learning penmanship in the 3rd grade.

Christ it looks great.

Also, the worm in the trailer? A baby apparently.

There was a sneak peek of the first ten minutes of the film and and then a BTS selection of footage in LA yesterday and the people there said that the worm that destroys the Spice Harvester in the film absolutely DWARFS the one you see in then trailer.

Shai-Hulud is gonna be MONSTROUS.
