Well, we played well, and put the only 2 balls in the net.

Too bad one of them was disallowed, and the other an OG. Also, that VAR review was.... ugh.

Hennessey played exceptionally well. I'm proud of our boys, they were able to create a lot of sharp moments, played aggressively and aside of a few shots lobbed wide from way out, they played smart.

Wales defended well, had some sharp attacks, and had just a tad more luck. It'll be fun watching them face England in the group stages.

I caught that end of it. Ukraine was pressing hard. I was hoping they would get the equalizer and then get it to penalties, but alas it wasn't to be.

Yeah, he passed Lineker at the last euros and is currently tied with Bobby Charlton. Only Wayne Rooney has scored more goals for England. Pretty impressive stats, and he still has a fair few goals left in him as well.

But a plasterboard has more charisma.

But it's also bollocks as well, banging in 10 goals against Andorra shouldn't really count.

Yeah but all of them occasionally feasted on subpar opposition so ...

Yeah, Rooney scored 5 against San Marino and 16 goals in friendlies. It happens. They count.

Van Persie scored 50 for the Netherlands, many of those undoubtedly against minnows. Still an impressive total though.

Also, both Rooney and Van Persie averaged an impressive 1 goal per 2 caps. Kane currently has over 1.5 goals per 2 caps on average (49 from 69 caps). That is impressive in anyone's book, regardless of the opposition.

Socceroos v Peru tonight for a place in the Cup finals.

Heart says

Head says  :no especially if it gets to a penalty shootout, because we are SHIT at those.

Fingers crossed.

Caught the highlights on the nightly sports broadcast. You're in. It went to penalties. What's up with the goofy specialist goalie that was brought in to stop the penalties? I know a goalie is not in violation of rules as long as he stays on his line, but this dude was nuttier than a chipmunk turd with all of his theatrics and dancing around. The camera was cruel in scanning over the crowd and showing all of the Peru fans crying in the stands. You're going to need to go elbow deep and pull a lucky golden horseshoe out of your asses to get out of the WC group stage. France, Denmark and Tunisia.

Yeah noone was more (pleasantly) suprised than me at that result.

And we won't get out of the group stage. Probably shouldn't even be in Qatar at all. Aside from being us lucky as all hell, it's a corrupt, hypocritical partial theocracy that wastes money like crazy and has killed hundreds (or more) of tens of thousands of essentially slave workers. The fact it ever got the WC is an embarrassing shitstain on world sport. Right up there with Sochi and Beijing Olympics.

The thing is though in this post-truth world none of the fuckers have the grace to look even slightly embarrassed. Nope, they're proud of that shit. Because there are no consequences for people like that.

Exactly. I am torn. I really don't want to watch the WC this time around. The fact that it is in a non-footballing nation where some of the footballers could be arrested just for existing is ridiculous. But then I think that the Premier League isn't exactly non-corrupt and there's bad stuff at all levels of the game (my current favourite is the Liverpool Asthma conspiracy theory )

I dunno, part of me thinks I shouldn't watch it in protest, but then I think that so many will be watching that it won't make a difference and I should just enjoy it and feel mildly guilty afterwards...

You're just covering yourself preventatively for a terrible England performance ;) 0-4 loss yo Hungary, wow.

Meanwhile, the Orange army twice best Wales in injury time. We are turning German, which in this case might be a good thing.

Oh yeah, Gareth Bale is coming to LAFC in the MLS. The MLS seems to be the retirement tour/exit interview for superstars from the Euro pro leagues. Thanks David Beckham for that, yabitch. They wanna amplify their brand in the US market before fading and tossed into the dust bin of time.

Well, since the China League isn't a thing any more ...

Anyone check out The Lords of Soccer podcast? I became aware of it from NPR Weekend programming. Any good?

It has soccer in the title, so it can't be.

Going to see NL vs Switzerland at the women's Euro this weekend in Sheffield. Had tickets for the NL vs Sweden match as well but that one fell through due to circumstances.

Our Women beat Canada to take CONCACAF championship, securing spot in next world cup and olympics. Didn't see the match as it was on paid streaming (Paramount+ I think). Saw highlights and we looked impressive. Canada is no push over. Some great opportunities by our side didn't provide results. Got through on an obvious penalty and pk conversion by Alex Morgan, for a 1 - 0 victory. Sports show threw up some impressive stats.

- Outscored opponents 13-0. Got to temper that though; the competition in CONCACAF isn't challenging at all, except maybe Canada.

- Extended shutout streak to 33 games in wc and olympic qualifying.

- Improved to 9-0-1 vs Canada in CONCACAF wc and olympic qualifying.

Our women's team are quite the marvel. They always seem to have new talent coming in (as the veterans are aging out) that are as good or better.
