What exactly is it about Rand's "Harem" that's so controversial?

It's been a while since I read the books but as I remember Rand is in a polygamous relationship with 3 willing women. If it's Polygamy people have an issue with then maybe they should have a look at themselves for being too judgmental...

On a side note, I thought Shannara was horrible. As someone who hadn't read the books, some of the plot made no sense whatsoever.

I think the biggest problem will be (again this is how I read it) is that Jordan really struggled to write good relationships. I struggled for ages to understand why Egwene broke up with him. The best I have ever been able to come up with is despite what she says she already sees that his being a male channeller and her being an Aes Sedai will be a problem. My younger self could not accept that in the End Egwene and Rand were never really in love and Egwene never cares for Rand the way the other villagers he grew up with.

In the beginning of the series, (and when I was much younger), I had similar feelings.

Looking back, I now think that if they had stayed at home, they would have married and loved each other under Rand died from the taint, just like in Egwene's trial visions. Once they went out into the world, they changed. They both still have fond feelings for each other, but have changed as individuals. It's amazing what a "move" will do for some people.

I agree with this. I started seeing this all the time when I went to college; couples who you knew would stay together forever almost always broke quickly. That said, I never quite bought that the three women would be okay with a polygamous relationship, especially in a world where women normally hold most of the power. It just seemed like one of those "Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills" things.

He Is The Dragon Reborn, breaker of rules, etc etc.
Worth noting that ranbd's relationships with the women who don't love him are just as critical to the story... Moiraine, Egwene, Lanfear, all play a part in getting him to the finale.

Starting with the fact that he was a bloody SURVIVOR contestant in Season 11.

I hope that the TV show isn't going to be a shit show. But I suspect that it will be.

Indeed. This update actually makes me fear it MORE not less. Judson has no pedigree as a show runner of any kind.

I would LOVE for this to get like 2 or 3 seasons and then get cancelled. It'll be like every attempt at Narnia ever (I know they're starting the next reboot with The Silver Chair just to finally get it over with -- funnily enough, that's Sony too).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I wish they did the first series based on the first book alone. It could work

Could do the first 3 books which was the original plan. Ishmael be the actual dark one.

It wasn't the original plan really. It's told already in the first book, although in a very discreet way, that he is not the Dark One. Jordan just made it seem like he might be the DO so he'd have some kind of an ending in case he wouldn't be allowed to write the entire series like he'd planned it.

The TV series now seems to be in a much more active stage of development. So far they've confirmed the following:

Episode 1 has been written by showrunner Rafe Judkins and is called "Leavetaking", which is also the name of Chapter 10 of THE EYE OF THE WORLD.

Episode 2 has been written by Amanda Kate Shuman and is called "Shadow's Waiting", which is the also the name of Chapter 19 of THE EYE OF THE WORLD.

This strongly suggests that they are planning to get through the novel in just 6 episodes or so (THE EYE OF THE WORLD is about 775 pages in length and the "Shadow's Waiting" chapter takes them up to around page 300). This may indicate a plan to get through the first two novels in the first season, which makes sense given there are fourteen books in the series.

Very curious. It's hard to tell what picking up the pace would do overall, but obviously in certain ways it could benefit a lot, and it'll hopefully keep the show to budget (in the sense of annual pay raises for the cast and such).

If there's no green light beyond a pilot, I'd look for ways to smash this down to five seasons to make a more palatable buy. There are huge sections that can be fast forwarded to get this done.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

If they just cut out braid tugging and skirt smoothing it will easily eliminate 23% of the story.

See that's the advantage of visual media. You can just show all the braid tugging without having to describe it!

Eliminate braid tugging, skirt smoothing, discussions of what embroidery everyone's wearing this week (seriously Jordan, if you tell me they're wearing clothes I'll believe you without the insane details) and cut all the Aiel Waste stuff down to a training montage and you've got your knocked down to five seasons in the bag :crybaby:

Joking aside, I'm pleased this has finally gotten past the background rumbling stage and looks set to actually happen. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Q&A with the showrunner.

This was pretty interesting stuff.
