What amuses me about this is EVEN if they somehow managed to get enough of Alberta to vote to separate (they won't; they had to lower the numbers that would allow the referendum to even take place as they could not get the original higher number), is that lets say they had a referendum and 51% voted to separate....that's not just "it", there are a whole slew of other legality steps like the fact that most of Alberta is treaty land they can't "take", they would have to try convincing the government and Supreme Court why they should be allowed to secede (this is especially difficult as Alberta is not like Quebec which was its own thing prior to the creation of Canada [New France really] in 1867 and chose to join us, whereas Alberta was "created" from land by the already existing Canada in 1905), but the big one that they would fall on their ass with? They need 7 of the other provinces to agree to let them leave. There is no universe in which this occurs. Nevermind all the logistics beyond that about forming their own country. They also seem convinced they would walk with Canadian resources to make themselves rich, but those are Canadian resources owned by private firms allowed to operate on the land...in this situation the resources stay in Canada and I can't fathom why anyone would assume otherwise.
This also (and she MUST know this) DOOMS Danielle Smith's tenure as Premier...she's already on shaky ground electorily as she wrestled the Premiership from the flagging Jason Kenney and won a leadership convention, not an election. So Alberta has not really had a chance to deal with her at the polls with he full electorate. She's made a TONNE of really shitty decisions and there's the stink of corruption across her tenure too....so when the time comes for a provincial election (on or before next October) she will not only have to deal with all that, but this attempt at separatism will oust her when it fails...just like Parizeau had to step down as Premier after Quebec's referendum failure in 1995...so I'm fascinated at what she thinks her game is....like is she really stupid enough to believe supporting this gets her out unscathed? Or is she convinced that Alberta leans enough right that she can ride the lightning and keep her job? Like as far as I'm concerned all that needs to happen is a more moderate centrist Conservative voice that most of Alberta can get behind without all the crazy maple maga shit that Danny engages in and they would landslide her out in 2027. I don't get what her goals are. The most egregious shit here is that she obfuscated and danced around the petition that has WAY more numbers to STAY in Canada so that it seems like the Separatist vote is larger than it is. It's not. It's a bunch of bumblefuck unintellectual MapleMaga being led by the nose by a few Separatist grifters who knew there was money to be made from the Convoy-set.
Anyways, won't happen, so no one should be concerned. It's a fairytale being sold to the province with the lowest general level of education...again when I worked in for the National Student Loan centre, the Albertans had their OWN phone line to call with a dumbed down script to read compared to the rest of the provinces...that's not by accident.
