Good luck, folks, and condolences for the tragedy in Vancouver over the weekend.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Brutal stuff. And it baffles me that preventable vehicle attacks are still not managed well. An American at my office says that for many bigger events, they have emergency vehicles at any road entrance to said event to prevent this...unsure why this isn't standard operating practice. After the van attack in Toronto, many of our major pedestrian-heavy areas had concrete barriers erected...they have been there ever since. Seems like a dead easy thing to implement.

Apparently there was no reason for police to think that the Pilipino community was at any risk so security was low/non-existent. Minimal info so far, but it suggests this was one individual w mental health issues, not a race/religion/terror attack. Really prelim and incomplete but the suggestion is that he would have run into any gathering of people he spotted. The lesson from the TO attack was that any gathering requires protection from this sort of thing, but it hasn't been widely taken up.

That tracks - Wednesday's child is full of woe after all.
But voting on a Monday - that's just ... odd. Smacks of the USA and it's love of making voting for the working classes as difficult as possible. Saturdays FTW.

Most news agencies are calling it for the Liberals and Mark Carney, just a matter of majority or minority now.
I expect our reward for keeping PP out of office is 4 years if Fuck Carney flags and convoy shit….but at least PP will hopefully be turfed as Con leader…and we have a competent person facing Trump.

If Quebec didn't pick the Liberals over the Bloc, it'd have been a bloodbath.
NDP's half-implosion meant the vote splitting is so bad that half the Island in BC, and nearly every progressive stronghold in SW Ontario went blue. I'm pretty sure the Cons got more NDP ridings than the Libs. And losing the Green seat in Kitchener Centre really hurts.
Libs got a few pickips (Peterborough was a shocker, and crushing pp is just *chef's kiss* ), but losing every suburb north of Toronto, and having Brampton come down to the wire is NOT good results. If trump wasn't a thing, this would've been a complete disaster.

Pollievre losing his seat is chefs kiss. I really didn’t dream it was possible.
168 seats is a repudiation of PPs Cons even if it’s slightly shy of a majority, as the dust settled overnight a 24 seat difference is a comfy distance. It means coalition is likely.

So I dunno how it works in Canada but could a coalition be a good thing? Would he be able to work with NDP (or even BQ??) to form a government?

that IS the question. The Cons actually gained seats, despite their leader pp losing his, and with a minority the only way the Libs accomplish anything is by dealing with the sad little remnant of the NDP, or, somehow by some miracle, the Bloc, tho on that point Quebec is furious enough at the US that they might play ball.
PP... i don't think anyone expected him to get quite so big a slap but in retro, visibly supporting the convoy was not a smart move for someone rep'ping a riding in Ottawa.

Yeah from what I saw, people took notice of how long it took pp to soak against trump. Like, he didn't want to but then realised too late how the tides were turning against him.

Bloq is on record today saying they are ready to work with the libs. So yeah, seems like it’s possible.
Edit to add that the whole separation thing may prevent it…but the libs have enough seats now to collation with the remaining NDP. So all good.

So the final numbers have settled, and it's 169 Liberal seats (they would need 172 for a majority, so just 3 seats shy) which means a minority govt, but I would imagine it's an easy (read: begging) situation to have a coalition with the state the other parties are in. Either way, a minority is always best in the Westminster system so that no one has a lot of direct control...
There is a lot of Alberta separation talk which makes me laugh. The people in that province, well 30% of theLess-Than-the-Population-of-the-GTA 4.2milion of them anyways, think that A. It's easy to separate and that they will take the land and resources with them....not really understanding that the land is 90% Treaty and crown lands: These treaties cover almost the entire physical landmass of where Alberta exists now, physically:
• 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆 𝟲 (𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟲): Covers central Alberta, including areas around Edmonton and extending into Saskatchewan.
• 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆 𝟳 (𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟳): Encompasses southern Alberta, including Calgary and Lethbridge, and was signed by members of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Stoney Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina Nation.
• 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆 𝟴 (𝟭𝟴𝟵𝟵): Covers northern Alberta and extends into parts of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories.
If Alberta attempted to separate, it could not legally or morally inherit those treaty relationships. First Nations would have strong constitutional and international law arguments to reject inclusion in Alberta’s separation, or to assert independent rights or continued relationship with Canada.
So it would have a fight already on that front...second, 30% of your electorate is nowhere NEAR enough people to referendum even the THOUGHT of leaving.
TL;DR: WeXit is supremely dumb an the people who posit it's even a remote possibility are even dumber.

I do not separatist/sovereign movements. So, you break away from the bigger thing and are now a smaller area and with no treatise or anything with anyone. How is this gonna help you?

They think that they will have all the current benefits of being a Canadian province as a standalone country with 4.2million ppl and international borders on all sides to contend with...it's nonsense, and no one who actually understands the situation would ever suggest it.
Danielle Marlaina Smith is insane.
