Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Law’s enigmatic commander.

But before long, Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And she’s got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls — the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.

Speaking of Earth, Captain Marvel takes place in the mid-’90s, long before Steve Rogers was defrosted or Tony Stark built his first suit. That allows the film to introduce younger version of familiar Marvel faces — like Jackson’s Nick Fury, who’s still a two-eyed S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey — as well as let Carol carve out her own, unique space in the MCU.

And Skrulls! Gods, this movie is shaping up well. The Skrulls, by nature of what they look like in the comics could have looked hokey, but they don't!

Production design on this film is tight.

I bought it on digital a few weeks back and have now seen it like 5 times, and it NEVER ceases to produce that reaction in me. In a good way mind you. I challenge any other film to set up a finale that well.

Tom Hollands' improv'd post-Snap Peter-to-Tony "Mr. Stark, what's happening? I don't want to go Mr. Stark, I don't want to go..." as he grips Tony like an ailing son would a loving father....MERE HOURS after Tony and Pepper discuss having a kid....reduces me to a puddle of tears. Every. Single. Time.

Oh, and I've noticed on re-watches how poignant Hemsworth is in the scene where he and Rocket are talking and he tries to laughingly describe the events in his life.family/friends that have led to this point and you can watch him emotionally start to shatter under it all. There is a small pause after he speaks, and in the silence Hemsworth's face is rigid with that "I'm holding it together, but oh my gods, I'm about to goddamn crack" pressure.

It's STUNNINGLY acted and scripted.

I don't want to soil anything from ANT-MAN AND The WASP for you, but in case you don't wish to wait:

Everyone in that is Snapped as well...except Ant-Man as he is in the Microverse when the Snap occurs and therefore it somehow doesn't affect him, but he's stranded there.

as to where they go next (speculation, but spoilers anyways):

Remember that Doctor strange told Tony at the end "I'm sorry Stark, this is the only way it could go." and "We're in the endgame now." and he previously stated that in only ONE set of events out of like 14 billion, did they win. Allowing Thanos to get the stones, and use the gauntlet to Snap reality...IS that timeline. We just don't see where it goes from here. Is everyone who was dissolved dead? No. Will time travel be involved to save people? almost certainly, and this is even referenced in ANT-MAN 2 with mentions of time vortexes.

And lastly, ask yourself this. When Thanos wanted the Soul Stone on Vormir, and Red Skull told him that he had to sacrifice that which he loved to get it (remembering that the stone itself was not physically present until after he did so), he sacrificed Gamora, and then the stone showed up for him. That coupled with the fact that Gamora shows up in the post-Snap moment where Thanos sees her as a little girl again and she asks "did you do it?"...tells me that Gamora either IS the Soul Stone, or she is inside it.

Bring on AVENGERS 4.

As an easy guess? The Kree nabbed her as a child more than once (the group of people she interacts with are a Kree team called Starforce; possibly led by Ronan from GOTG) And erased her memories to have her fight in their wars with the Skrulls in space, she comes back and begins to recall the erased stuff...with the help of Fury.

And if we REALLY want to get into deep theory territory:

Jude Law was apparently supposed to be playing Mar-Vell, the benevolent Kree who gives Carol her powers...but he looked evil in that clip, so I think Mar-Vell (the real one) died and Yon-Rogg (Kree bad guy) assumed Mar-Vell's body/identity and he's been manipulating Carol for her whole life to serve his whims. In the comics Yon-Rogg is directly responsible for giving Carol her original Ms. Marvel powers (in an attempt to serve him, but instead she becomes his biggest foe), so I think it's possible the MCU is merely adapting that aspect into her Cap Marvel persona instead, and using Jude Law's Mar-Vell as the disguise to hide a late game Yon-Rogg reveal. I would also guess this means that Yon-Rogg is working WITH the Skrulls, and not against them as he should be.

All theory town speculation mind you.
