How did you play Dark Souls the first with no USB controller plugged in?

I got me a Logitech one and it's been just peachy.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Ah

So I got Dark Souls 2 for my birthday and plugged it in today. This is more polished in terms of plot and npcs but there are still problems. The targeting reticle for mages atleast is still wildy inconsistent and theres a few other issues. Still enjoyable.

Any way got to that No Mans Wharf place with the shadow monsters. Had about 15k souls stored up but knew there was a sorcerer trainer coming up so wanted to use it with him. Walked into a room with one of the black shadow monsters and another dropped through the ceiling. My character for some reason, and im sure you couldnt do this in the first game, turned around and calmly closed the door instead of running. The monster then smashed down the entire wall, door includd, allowing me to run away. In any case I got to 18k souls then lost them.

Gutted should have just warped home

You knew there was a sorceror trainer in the area? Are you using a walkthrough? For Dark Souls?

For shame.

Ha, busted. Although some reviews contain info like that to be fair, and I read plenty of those before I played it.

The wharf was the first time it started to feel like a souls game to me, with the room searching and things hiding in the dark. And no excess bonfires.

When I realised those shadow creatures were afraid of the torch, I chased them all the way to the building... where they were cornered and all hit me back at the same time.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

The torch? You've got to be kidding me. I lit up the entire area with a lockstone before I lured them out one by one. Even then, I was scared shitless when I had to skirt their buildings. I never even considered that, mainly because I was too fond of my shield.

I was less worried about them when I perfected the 'run to the boss'.. where you sprint from the bonfire to the ship via the huts without engaging anything, if you can get through the last door quickly enough.

Also, I love the shield, but I also love the massive damage bonus from two-handing, which can sometimes make all the difference.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Cant remember how I knew, might have even been this thread but no no guide. I might have even got it from a review or something or snippets of gameplay id watched.. Only time I look anything up is what you can use the boss souls for but only after ive beaten them so no strategies etc.

Got through the wharf after a while. Very much like New Londo in Souls 1 with hard to see enemies and no bonfire. This one after you beat the enemies a certain amount of times it seems they disappear. Any way I struggled through the Wharf as Im playing a sorcerer and 'ammo' was a main concern so I farmed attunement for a bit. Any way perfected the run to the boss bit and fought that Sentry guy and beat him first time. Then moved on to the bastille bit. Went back, cant remember what for, but remembered there was a locked door by the giant boss battle. Went through there and found another fog gate that had boss battle ahead written all over it, figuratively and literally. Went through to fight that Pursuer guy.

Classic Souls boos battle. First time very cautious wore him down and was one shot away from killing him usual reason saw that he was one away from death so got too cavalier. Second time far too casual going in and didnt even get him past half health. Think I beat him like 5th time though so its not too bad. Just got to the second bonfire in that Bastille place and dropped down into that boss battle for the first time with the three things. Landed disoriantated and got killed very quickly.

In an effort to cut down on spells for finishing enemies off ive gotten a rapier that is used like a spear near enough. Ive started upgrading it and all sorts. So far im not really sure where to go other than that 3 boss battle fight.

That fight is a blast early on. If you can kill the single one on the platform before the other two engage, it just about makes it possible.

Not sure about the mage build though; I had to take two at once, timing the blocks and dodging the spin attacks, wearing them down one at a time. Felt like a proper earned victory that one.

Yeh the Soul SPear unload thing hits poise and staggers them but with not much damage. Im missing homing soulmass

EDIT- So I was on chat talking to everyone not really concentrating trying too many different things. In the end it was a fairly simple fight though the most difficult one yet. Had to kill the one on the platform you land on without losing any health then hitting the one walking over with as many spells as I could. When he jumped up I hit him a few times and when the other one jumped up I had one on full life th other on half life.

Dropped down to the floor and stopped trying to use my rapier and concentrated on magic fire which was difficult given they raise shields.

It makes you realise how overpowered the heater shield was on DS1. A light shield that could be wielded by anyone with a 100 block on physical damage.

Anyway ill explore in the morning. At the moment though this is the only path ive gotten. I have to give that woman 2k souls to move another path for me but other than that ive got no wher to go

So I continued on.

The sewer titanite demon ish things take a good beating and the crazy exploding mummies are a bit difficult. My current place at the moment is the Lost Sinner. It has killed me a shedload of times and most of the time its due to the woefully inconsistent targeting system. Id noticed its range changes wildly throughout the game and it sticks sometimes during range jumps but sometimes the reticle unlocks making it difficult to time dodges. Never been a huge issue before but as a sorcerer against a mobile opponent its so unwieldy. It wouldnt matter if it was consistent but its so random.

Gonna have another go at it later on but its the first major challenge that taken me loads of times.

Lost Sinner's targeting is based on the darkness level of the room. It's an intentionally designed aspect of the fight. I can't really say more unless you want something spoiled.

Have you lit the fires before you go in?
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I have not.

I did think it was dark in there actually but tbh I havnt used the torch once. I thought about lighting some torches but didnt see any in there. Unless there was some outside I missed.

I also dont have any of those exalted rings that someone upthread has. I think magic seems alot less powerful in this one though it was overpowered in the previous game. I regret not going a high dexterity rapier user tbh.

Also how do you apply poison and stuff to weapons because the current blacksmith in majula doesnt seem to do it.

RE targeting system it wasnt great on the old game but this one is inconsistent throughout the game.

EDIT- Tbh im struggling alot more on this one but with the exact same stats and playthrough style and it seems like a less enjoyable game. I dont know why yet either maybe just nostalgia. A sorcerer playthorugh was a fairly standard playthrough om the old game but seems more complex on this one and I seem to be missing alot of things. Ive essentially just gone down that one path from majula that leads to the giant and carried on from there without stopping. It doesnt seem to link up with a fireshrine hub yet but maybe because its a bigger game?

I am just sort of limping along at the minute not really knowing what to do, clearly missing stuff throughout the game despite being thorough. A sorcerer playthrough is a strange thing because training up does nothing its only the acquisition of new spells that really increases damage output.

I went through huntmans copse last night to have a look round and will be pushing through that area for now instead of the lost sinner for a while.

The torches make life a lot easier in some places, even if I never really found anywhere truly dark like that dungeon they showed in the trailer where you had to choose between shield and torch.

There are two alcoves, one each side of the Lost Sinner gate - they light lava flows that light up the room.

There's a smith in the Bastille you might have missed; you need to dodge the barrel that rolls down the stairs and let it blown a hole in the wall. There's a bonfire there, and the smith sells a few different things, especially once you get an ember for him. The weapon upgrade system has been horribly simplified, so you just need the right stones to forge new weapons.

There's also a guy in the wooden house on the wharf (the shadow infested one) who sells poison arrows if you want them.

Your best bet is to keep heading through Huntmans Copse for now though, it's easier than Sinners Rise, although I finished the Lost Sinner first as I ended up there like you.

Don't forget that if you have a Soul Vessel you can reset your stats if you want to try a different build.

Yeh the doors above it our locked and I have no idea where the key would be. After a fair few goes I thought 'well im just missing something' but in DS1 there wasnt many bosses like that. Seath and Ceaseless discharge are the only ones and Discharge could be killed straight up. It always felt cheap using them though whereas with Seath it was a necessity. Like I beat Manus without that Pendant that nullified his sorcery. There where times when I faced Ornstein and Smough and thought 'well I must bve missing something' but I wasnt they were simply a difficult boss.

I have continued into huntsman copse and have just found the cave with the necromancer and the unkillable skeletons. I have also gone the other way with the drop down guardians that come through the valley and that skeleton chariot. It comforatbly killed me in like one hit and at the moment I have no clue how to even attempt to kill it. I havnt intentionally farmed anywhere and my level is like 70 I think so dont know whether thats it but I struggle constantly and have no more dolls to go back from hollow.

I have definitely missed the Bastille guy and I know where you mean. Going to check it out now.

The soul vessel wont let me change my class though will it? Ive put the bare minimum points into getting being able to barely use a rapier, which is available from the beginning of the game, and have boosted it to plus 5 and it is easier to kill enemies with it than sorcery atm. This despite my intelligence and attunement being mid 30s.
