Okey, while we're waiting on Tatts, D'rek and Khell I did some work.

Hmm. I had thought that png was the superior format. Apparently not. The jpg is much clearer when zoomed on my ipad mini.

Yeah, my feeling is similar to CF's. I like the simple board with red, pretty easy to read everything, but I'm also fond of the traditional background with the red font overlaid. I'd say the latter if forced to choose - having the galaxy background adds a little to the 'atmosphere' of the game I think.

Okey. Once more. This is not a choice of simple hexes vs. traditional hexes. I'm going to post BOTH. The simple should be helpful to those in a hurry on phones. Given that does anyone have a preference for the red text or the black text on the simple map? I like the black but the red is easier to read. I find it a bit loud. I can also try different colors.

I used CF's idea of putting those 40pt text all in one layer by themselves. So changing the color of all of them at one time takes about 10 seconds.

Yeah, change em to a high contrast colour like white for the standard hexes and black for the simplified board and you're probably good.

You could do 2 text layers with identical content, each with a different colour as described above. Just turn on one or the other depending on the background you're featuring. Unfortunately, when your background colour choices are dark grey and light grey, (ie orig. hexes vs simple hexes) there is no one colour that contrasts equally with both IMO.

I like both, but the simple one gives me the ability to read the map on my phone. That way I wont have to make orders based on memory when I'm at work.

Anyone care to give comments/advice on how best to adapt this style of playerboard?

http://forum.malazan...-1399839377.jpg

Spoiler

Pros:
  • can be made a vector object instead of raster image. smaller file size.
  • can be put into the layers of the svg file so that, once done, the "simple map" would have a counterpart "simple playerboards"
  • once done, can be converted back to jpg and uploaded to the steam game. Might allow the limited size of that game table to hold all the parts needed for eclipse.

Cons:
  • not pretty. but for our forum games I can do both.

I don't know how well it would work in our forum games, but that version is quite pretty! Where is it from?

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

That is a great way to do the playerboards Gnaw, looks very nice!

We can probably do without the fancy ships and starbases, but with what you've made we'd have most of the functionality we need.

Only advice is not to add the "shine" filters to the basic icons. It's not necessary for our purposes, and filters make your file big and sloooooooow...especially if you have a lot of them.

Looking more closely:

  • change the Advanced Materials icon to brown so it's consistent with the board.
  • Consider putting a little black star on the advanced material, econ and labs icons. They just kinda look like orbitals right now.
