I quite liked the way bb8 was going down those steps.. bump - look down. Bump - look down..

Not sure the Falcon, being that old, was quite convincing being bounced around and slammed into the ground so much without any damage - those shots made it look like a toy. I much preferred the external close ups. The Star Destroyers looked pretty good on the big screen though

Yeah, I think you've let your (misplaced, imo) love of the EU ruin this for you.
Humour? The humour in this was great. There were comparatively no cringe inducing moments like the ones that littered the prequels, even RotS.
Boyega was great. His character was definitely the weaker of the two big new protagonists but it wasn't atrocious 'get it out!' levels like, I don't know, Anakin. Or Jar-Jar.

Hopefully you don't let your serious EU hangover affect future viewings.

I thought Finn was great actually. Both funny and dramatic as it was called for. Boyeg is an awesome actor in my books.

Finn was pretty good, the humour bit seemed out of place because he's not a character whose personality had shone through previously.

I thought Hammil looked pretty portly actually.

Po had some great scenes, but his disappearance/reappearance was a bit lazy.

The humour that actually got to me were the too on-the-nose Chewbacca moments. It was simultaneous funny and a bit too much

Loved it. We went to see it last night and our screen all cheered and clapped at the end (that's not really a done thing in the UK). There are little things I could probably pick fault with, but I don't want to. Abrams gave me a Star Wars film that feels like a Star Wars film, after the travesty of the last three. Very happy!

Yeah, I saw it in Leicester Square and there was a lot of that there, too - not just at the end but at the start and at various points during the movie. At the end, a guy a few rows in front of us jumped to his feet and kept shouting "YES! YES!"

8 better give a reason of how Rey went from 0 to 10 with Force. Maybe Ben unlocked suppressed memories or the connection just imprinted the Force in her but that's not how Force works

Saw it last night. Liked the first 30 mins. Then I began to dislike the film. By the end, i'm not going to say I actively hated it, but it was getting there. Recycled plot and forced humour is a big no-no for my enjoyment in general so thats probably the reason. I'd give it 4/10. A must see for the cultural moment thing I guess but thats about it. Kidna like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull maybe? How is that film viewed these days anyway?

Rey doesn't go from 0 to 10. She's been unconsciously using it all her life and it went up in big jumps throughout the movie. First, the chase with Finn as gunner, then the release me moment, then the lightsaber battle.

She went from a 1 to a 3 to a 5. Ben has been stuck at a 6 or 7 for a while because he didn't get fully trained by anyone yet. It's clear he didn't finish the apprenticeship with Luke and that Snoke is holding back on him. All he's needed to do is carve through soldiers and torture unresisting people, so he hasn't been pushed to be better.

Rey didn't have to be better than Kyllo in full health to beat him. He'd been hit by a bowcaster bolt, so he was injured before any fighting started. It's a small stretch, not a big one, to see the very capable Rey discover the next step up.

As for how Anakin's saber was recovered, Alistair Reynolds showed me that a gas giant can have bands of different pressure and density upon which a light object can float for a while. Maz may have been force sensitive enough to recover it on a deep dive or someone else may have been able to.

Well not exactly at the same quality but reasonably close in execution, for my personal taste buds anyway.
Competant and efficient sure but given the hype and expectations behind them, letdowns.

I would recommend going to see it but I agree with bk. It was for me, someone who hasn't read the eu, just a new hop with slightly less convincing light saver fights and a much less convincing villain. The amount of convenience in the plot mentioned elsewhere, like the force literally appearing in someone with no training, was a bit much. Say what you will about the prequels at least they tried to tell a different story

Oh, see I LOVE Kylo Ren (Ben Solo). He's so much more conflicted than Vader ever was. I mean he is actualy TEMPTED by the LIGHT side. That's damned cool to me. His lightsaber is badass. He's a petulant, emotional, force-strong asshole with a split personlity. It's much more complex....even if we haven't seen the full gamut of what that means yet. LOVED Ren throughout. From the moment he holds a laser bolt in midair with the force (while doing other things!) he held my attention. Loved how he let himself rage a few times. He's a great grey character. The scene where he kills his father, you really don't know if he's gping to go through with it. You can tell he's conflicted.

BK, Novelization purchased. Start reading it tomorrow and you can grill me later this week.

Ok Just saw the movie. Gonna post my thoughts before reading anything.

Overall movie was unoriginal and underwhelming. I was never a large fan of Star Wars, but this is kind of disappointing. Literally just a remake of A New Hope with no new elements. Please someone tell me something original this film brought to the table?. How does something like this get made and the people making it say, hey lets just do the same shit all over again? Han Solo's death by Kylo Ren was obvious and I think everyone saw it coming, but necessary to prove he is on the dark side. Another death star that the rebellion goes and destroys... really? cant think of something new, just gonna rehash the same ultimate weapon, with the pretty much same sequence to take it down? And why are the good guys always the weak ones, how the hell did the baddies get so strong yet again in such a short time. Would be more interesting if the rebellion were the dark side forces. Rey the poor scrapper is literally Luke as the poor farmer on a planet that looks the same. The fight between Kylo and Ren was fine and Kylo looks like a badass but I think it would be better if the fight was a stalemate, but thats just my opinion. There wasnt enough of using the force like throwing around trees and such. Also, Kylo could have just choked Fin in no time instead of fighting with him, and actually getting stabbed once or twice.

I understand keeping it similar so its not a big deviation from the ones we all love but this was just lazy. Its still a decent film and there is nothing inherently wrong with its pretty much A New Hope just not as good. 7/10 max.

Want to add a few more things. I loved the fact that shit was actually built and there were physical models and creatures and stuff. Also, did anyyone notice that the main actress that plays Rey looks like Hugo Weaving but in female form? I might be attracted to Hugo Weaving now...
