Did anybody else really get a kick out of how this prelude came off as SE saying "This is another tale from the Malazan file I feel is worth telling. You will NOT get answers to all your questions. You WILL have more of them the more you read. And for anyone out there that complains about this (or timeline inconsistencies) FUCK YOU TOO!
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.
It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

Is Gallan already dead there? I was thinking that it's his ghost talking to Fisher, or something like that.

Misleading title! Got me all fired up for a prologue, and then nothing.... but then, prelude...
Why?!?!
Gallan sounds like a bit of an a-hole...

IMNSHO, Fisher is Gallan reborn, a la Coltaine. He's written himself a message from his own past, but its interpretation is left up to his current incarnation.
Alternatively, Fisher is something like Coltaine, but not actually Gallan. "The bard's immortal", yes, but via reincarnation, not longevity.

It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Did anyone else find this prelude to be very similar in style and tone to "Crack'd Pot Trail" which also has a poet/narrator type character? It's lovely, by the way, can't wait.

To those who might be interested in this sort of things, FoD features three new maps. There is a map of Kharkanas, one of Kurald Galain, as well as one of the Thel Akai, Jaghut, and Tiste Realms. . .

The Thel Akai should just be Wu, shouldn't it?

They appear as detailed as the maps from the other Malazan offerings...

That's good to know because we haven't had a nice map in a while (actually the guy put some work on the STONEWIELDER map).
I think it's from Reaper's Gale onward that no effort hasn't been put in a map. The one in DoD/TCG in particular.

It would be great if you lucky bastards would give regular updates about your impressions of the book while working your way through it. Really looking forward to it.

Erikson said in a couple of interviews that he would write the Kharkanas books in a different style than MBOTF, does it feel very different?

Not really. Still epic, yet probably not as sprawling a novel as we're usually used to, what with it clocking in at 662 pages...

So maybe we'll find out how the Empty Hold became Empty.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Okay, so I'm about 25% done with FoD and I'm really enjoying it.
While readind TMBotF, the prologues going back in time were always my favorite portions of the books. For some reason, the back story often resonates more with me than the actual plot... And now, I have an entire trilogy to sink my teeth into!!!
Without giving anything important away, I can tell you that
It's cool to see the three Sons of Darkness as young men, so different (yet so alike) from the powerplayers they will become in the years that will follow.
Epic and multilayered, so far it looks as good as most of Erikson's Malazan offerings...
