I just hope its worth the wait. The story of Jon Snow should be at the forefront, i think. Even Sansas story is picking up.

Lorn - you should read Martin's books, otherwise you'll never know if what they have said is true.

I think you remember the Bastard of Bolton scene a bit wrong. If you are referring to where he destroyed the Winterfell men outside the wall when Theon had taken WF.
What they saw was a bunch of people wearing Bolton colours (at that time, allies of Winterfell), so why should they be suspicious. Don't think the Bastard of Bolton presented himself as such. Haven't read the book in a while either, but I'm fairly certain you remember it wrong, they didn't know who he was.

As for the boulder scene. Granted it's not very original, but since when does it have to be. It fit in with the scenario that was presented, she could hardly have done something different.

And yes, he's taken lots of ideas and themes from history. But name me a fantasy author who hasn't. It's the execution that counts, and Martin's is, imho, flawless. Which everyone seems to agree with Posted Image

I always think, present company excluded of course, that there's something unpleasant lurking in people who avoid drinking, gambling, table talk and pretty women

Yeah im pretty sure the giant wolf is Arya's Nymeria. This is from the wolf dream that Arya has when the wolf finds Catelyn.

I'd agree that its a marketing scam...as well as an intriguing teaser from GRRM.I suppose it comes down to economics.i.e. are you prepared to buy or cannot.

The money issue is not so important for me..(a few quid won't break the bank) but i can see the point of view of those not very impressed with George.

Yeah, Dickens got paid per word and the quality of his works are IMHO there after. He standardised the way tv-series are written with a cliff-hanger at the end to want us tune in for more but I can't say I especially enjoy either Copperfield or Twist. But back to Martin, I prefer long delays and good books than short delays and crappy books. As long as he delivers a well written book in the end I won't complain.

Sorry, read a few more chapters, and how the hell is Bran still alive after being pushed off a tower and breaking his back? Or is this revealed later? What is the significance of the broken antler in the dead direwolf's neck, are deers like mythical cretures, or is it something to do with the king's house sigil?

Caladan, that's part of the idea. The books are founded on characters. Very rarely are these in the company of other POV characters, especially in the last two books (and never for Dany). The characters drive the story, and in a very real sense these are seperate stories. Jon fighting the Others, Dany conquering, Arya lost and travelling alone (much like her wolf), Bran searching for the three-eyed crow, ect, etc. In fact the last time I reread the story I read all of one character's one after the other and them moved on to the next. You should try it, you'll see what I mean I think. It really does shed a lot of light on the story.

I've actually had that book since it came out and never bothered to read that short story.

Damn, that's a bit weird.

@Blinky
It kind of bugs me that people view sex as a no-go area in fantasy. But I don't think it is over done in ASOIAF. The scenes commonly last between one and two paragraphs each at most. Really, it's that little. It only seems more because it's uncommon among most fantasy books. Personally I like the sex scenes. You get to see the characters at their most private moments, and so get their feelings. Sure you can say that if you want sex you'll read a porn mag, but why must genres be seperate? Why can't they overlap or merge? It's no where near as bad as Goodkind, I don't think.

Personally I think what GRRM is doing is a good idea, no different from putting demos of games on video games mags.
